2016-2017 University of Washington Application Thread

Their first meeting was today!!!

I thought they were normally on Fridays, no? Just curious how you know they had one today?

It's crazy to think about that we all potentially don't know where we are going to be living in 7-8 months - and might not know till right before we have to move. For non-trads with families and owning a home, talk about a stress inducing wait. Living right off the LR and with the new station, I seriously dream about being able to hop on and head into the hospital. It opened my last term at UW and it was glorious. Combine that with having to either sell a house or be a landlord, and I can't tell you how much I hope to get to go to UW (not to mention all the things about the actual school I love)

I received the call from my excom member last night (Wednesday) and he told me they just had their first meeting. He said the meeting was was either yesterday or the day before...I can't totally recall now d/t being in semi-shock.

Interviewed on 10/4, LizzyM 68, IS, 2nd time applicant

And I completely agree with you. Last year/cycle and the beginning of this year had me in a continually heightened state of anxiety about where I was going to be this year and next year. I am hopeful that you and everyone else will be able to stay here or go to a school where they will be able to grow and learn to love.

Im living vicariously through you until I receive news on my interview. This gave me chills.

Congrats!!!

Annnnnnnd now I'm nervously waiting...

I interviewed on the 6th

And I received a missed call this morning from a private number...
Fingers crossed!!

Long time lurker here. II a few days ago, how long does it usually take to hear back? Any advice for the interview day?

I'm going to assume then that I was SUC'ed or rejected since I was a 10/4 as well, and from what I understand they usually call same day as the decision is made.

Yay for negativity and self doubt 🙂

Im wondering if EXCOMs from yesterday's interview were present at the meeting

My understanding is all 18 of them "try" to be at every meeting - and it just sometimes happens that yours might not be able to make one - so I would say there is a good chance. Again though, I know we shouldn't be reading into the tea leaves too much, no matter how much we want to.

It's so hard to make any meaning out of things sometimes, but I distinctly remember from last years theead, two people who interviewed the same day didn't get acceptance calls on the same day (and neither was SUC'ed)

I was more wondering if the EXCOM meeting was last night (which they could have been at to discuss interviews from yesterday) or whether the EXCOM meeting was the night before. Oh well.. just will sit tight =)

Has anyone been invited to interview lately? Trying to be patient but its sooooo hard. Nearly that 3 week mark from complete.

Just a reminder it took me about 6 weeks to get an interview invite. The wait can be tough though i know.. Hang tight 👍

Hey! The turnaround rate was surprisingly quick for me, but it varies widely from a few weeks to months depending on if your excom member is available to meet, how you compare with the rest of the group, and whatever secret sauce UW likes to use (the process is not the most transparent).

I just gave some advice to someone who PM-ed me, but I'll share it here in case anyone else finds my words useful:
I think my best advice would be to be as genuine and personable as you can be while also being mindful of how you want to present yourself. I had several stories of experiences that I wanted to weave into my interview and I made sure to integrate them with questions that were asked -- essentially try to direct the conversation as much as you can because you do have some control. A good way to do this is to make a set list of bullet points for potential questions and try to make them all connect to an overall narrative that ties back to your primary and secondary. You want to be consistent while also giving the interviewers a good picture of the unique individual that you are beyond the words they've read.
I also made sure to be reflective about every story so that I was conveying what I learned rather than simply relaying an event -- relate stories back to medicine and how they shaped your views regarding physician-patient relationships, comparative health care systems, health care disparities, social justice issues, etc.
And remember to relax, breathe, and drink water when you need to because talking so much will make you parched from time to time. It's okay to stop and take a second to think. UW invited you because they like you and they want you to get in. They are your advocate and you have to help them get the tools to be the best advocate for you.

And to anyone else who feels nervous right now: it's super early for acceptances! There are still many many many spots left to fill. Don't fret yet!!! You'll be okay!! I know it's easy to feel crummy and harbor self-doubt once acceptances begin and you haven't received your call yet, but there is no true linearity to this process. Let me know if you want to talk about anything at all. My inbox is very open 🙂

This whole process is super stressful (and I had to go through it twice!). As much as possible, try to relax and remember that the UW doesn't even offer acceptance to 50% of the class until March, and some people still receive interview invites in January!

I'm an out of state applicant, I submitted the mission statement on October 9th and received a secondary invite on October 27th.
I'm also OOS, I submitted mission statement a little later but also got the secondary invite on the 27th

Anyone know whether the school welcomes letters of interest post-interview? Would our EXCOM member or anyone of importance even see these if we did send them? I assume they might not..

Dang it, I was going to ask mine that but I forgot!! I may just call.

I just got an interview follow-up email from Washington. They want me to come back for a second interview due to some disagreement between interviewers. I'm OOS and had to fly across the country to make it to the interview. I don't know if I can afford to take the time off and fly out again. Has this happened to anyone else? I absolutely love this school and am heartbroken that they are unsure about me.

Holy cow, that's terrible. I'm so sorry.

Could you ask if it was possible the school to pay for your flight back out?

I'm hard pressed to believe that the school would pay for a flight of a prospective student that there had been a disagreement on. But I wish you luck mooxamillion!!!

Yeah I would think so too, but I mean it's extenuating enough of circumstances that I think it'd warrant asking.

I know someone who had to do this, although I am not sure what the outcome was to be honest. On the bright side, at least one of them loved you and was willing to fight for you. If they all agreed you should be rejected they wouldn't ask for you to come back

I would explain to them your OOR situation and see what they think. Like I know in person interviews are by far the best option but I wonder if they would do a skype one. Definitely a rough situation, I'm sorry. They may be willing to figure something out since you are OOR.

One of the current students who hosted lunch on my interview day mentioned that he was invited back for a second interview. He got in! I know one other person who was invited back for a second interview who was ultimately not accepted. I think it can go either way. I think if anything it's good that they're seriously considering you. Much better than a flat out rejection!

I met with a 3rd year the other day who had the same situation except he was IS. He got in though, and he said his second interview was COMPLETELY different than the first. Way more relaxed and less intense. I realize its a very expensive flight, but you're going to be 200K in debt anyways so whats another 1K going to do.

Thanks for all your kind words guys. I really love the school and believe it is a great fit for me. The situation is just a little rough and I'm a little surprised that they only conduct 25 minute long interviews. I firmly believe that if they simply extended the interview time to an hour that they wouldn't need to invite applicants back for a second interview. I feel like I barely had time to talk about my application! Again though thank you so much for your thoughts

I felt really similarly. I was fighting for time to talk and it seemed like they needed to keep the pace up.

Exactly. It felt slightly more artificial than some more conversational interviews I have had because they wouldn't react to my responses. Instead they would just move onto another question. It felt rushed and I have no idea how they are able to evaluate someone's character in such a short amount of time! I have faith in this process though I just need to decide how much time, energy, and money I am willing to dedicate to a school that may turn around and reject me. Still a good spot to be in though. Good luck everyone!

It's a tough spot for sure. Follow your gut. If you feel like the school is a great fit, I would definitely go for it.

Out of curiosity, when did you interview?

I also interviewed (OOR) on 10/24 and did not get anything like this. Was your EXCOM Dr. Sutton?
I honestly don't remember I would have to look it up. Have you received any news at all? I would say at this point no news is good news!

Omg they just wrote back and said they do Zoom interviews! They were so nice and said they definitely wouldn't want to make me fly all the way back to Washington again. So excited!!!!

I have heard nothing. Higher up in this thread it seemed like there was an EXCOM meeting last week; I assumed our interview day did not make it into that meeting.

I assumed the same, but who knows. You could be hearing back soon! Good luck with everything- it was nice meeting all of the Out of Region-ers last week!

THAT'S FANTASTIC NEWS!

I interviewed on the same date. Pretty sure you were in the same campus tour group with me. I know you have amazing extracurricular activities. Be confident and best of luck!!!

That's really sweet of you thank you so much! Good luck to you as well!

Any more news from early interviewees? SUC/Reject emails? Anyone? Bueller?

Am I correct is saying that after every committee you will either be SUC/Rejected/Accepted, that there isn't anyone that just gets silence (you get a new SUC email every meeting, right?)
