2016-2017 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm sorry if this has been answered already but for those that have been accepted, is there a deposit to put down? and how long do you have to decide?

I called the admissions office the other day, there is no deposit.

Seems like if things remain in pattern that the next batch of interviewees will hear back on December 2. Interviewed very end of October. Hoping they haven't forgot about our applications!

For any WSU med students scoping this thread, can y'all tell us about your experience at WSU? the things you like/dislike?
I graduated from WSU SOM class of 2016, am now an EM resident. Some of what I can tell you is changing, since the school is revamping their curriculum following the audit for accreditation. However, the biggest thing that brought me to Wayne, and its biggest advantage, is the location. Wayne State is located in the heart of one of the biggest underserved communities in the country. There is no end to the unique pathology you will see here, and you will have a ton of hands-on clinical experience as a student at Wayne State. Pretty much any program familiar with Wayne grads comments on how well prepared we are clinically when we start residency. The most important part of your medical school education will be your clinical exposure, and Wayne State is one of the best schools in the country for clinical exposure.

One of the biggest advantages of the first 2 years for me was lectures being non-mandatory and streamed online. It definitely frees you up to study at your own pace and in your own way when you dont have to be at the school every day from 8 until 4. Unfortunately, i dont know how much that will be changing the next couple years.

Wayne State is a great place to train, though organization of some things is not perfect. I do think, at the end of the day, the clinical exposure more than makes up for bureaucratic failings.

This made me want to go there even more.

Does anyone know how Wayne handles scholarships/financial aid packages? For example I know some schools consider you for scholarships based on your application that they already have, while others require separate application

what do you take with you to the interview? a notebook with a pen? I heard for some med schools students take a CV
and do you need to present an ID to them?

No. You dont need to bring anything.
Edit: I mean, you should always have an ID on you, just in case, but you wont need anything else at the interview.

Pretty much any MD interview, you won't be asked to bring ANYTHING. I only say MD because I am unfamiliar with the DO process

Well dang...
I was already iffy about applying to a school in Detroit, but I'm not trying to put myself at risk for the next four years of medical school.

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

I grew up in Detroit, went to high school a couple of blocks away from WSU and attended summer programs at WSU -- this one incident doesn't sum up the whole city nor does it sum up WSU.

Why are you sure they are not meeting till Monday? I thought they were supposed to meet the first of every month. Notices come out the day after, on the second of the month. This at least seemed to be the case for the November 2 crowd.

Just a feeling! I would be very happy if I'm wrong. I've been in Scott Hall all day and I have not seen members of the committee around the office where they usually meet.

I really hope you guys get accepted. The application process stress level drops and the entire process is much more enjoyable. Best of luck to everyone. I check everyday, let me know your decision

So, I just got an email from this school to apply..what do you guys think? Is it worth it so late in the cycle? This is my third cycle applying and I've never put in an app for this school, so it could be good!!!

Have any other schools that contacted you given you an interview? Curious. Very late in the cycle but Wayne does offer a ton of interviews

It's never too late with Wayne, since applications are not reviewed in the order that they are received here. I would definitely go ahead and give it a try!

Hey Bararaboi, could you please hook me up with some wayne non trad on the forum. I am trying to figure out living arrangements for next year.

Would you mind messaging me with a little more information as to what type of non-trad you are (mom, dad, lawyer etc.) and I'll try to connect you with someone with similar demographics.

For the non-trads in this thread, just want to point out that the number of non-trads has been increasing from year-to-year. I think the average age in my class is 25, and we have people from all sorts of backgrounds: moms, dads, lawyers, former scientists with PhD's and what not.

Another reason to love the school!

Edit: The system wont let me pm you.

I keep hoping that we'll be surprised with that admissions decision email today

Accepted students: how did you feel like you did for the mmi and long form?

I know I'm being neurotic but what else is there to do but overthink on a friday evening lol

I thought I did pretty terrible on both lol

When did you guys interview?
Omg what I just got the acceptance email!!!! I was not expecting this at all..SO EXCITED

I'm not that mean.

Congratulations, XYZ.

On behalf of the Admissions Committee and the entire Wayne State community, I am excited to offer you a place in the 2017 freshman class at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

You possess the unique combination of humanitarianism and intellectual fortitude to be a successful medical student at WSU, where unparalleled urban clinical experiences will benefit you in a residency program and well into your career.
