Your third year rotations are set up for you for the most part but you set up your entire 4th year yourself. DMU has an optimization thing that you can get rotations through the school, but there aren't enough spots for every student to get a rotation, and some of the rotations are in things like PT, podiatry, and working in a pharmacy. You do the work to get your away rotations and you cross your fingers and hope that DMU doesn't give you any trouble or extra hoops to jump through. Getting 4th year rotations works in a few ways by knowing people, asking previous preceptors to take you, finding alumni who might take you, and applying for rotations at allopathic schools through VSAS/VSLO.

I guess that could be both a good thing or a bad thing, since you have the flexibility to set up away rotations at places that you want to do residencies. It seems like DMU gives you quite a bit of flexibility for elective rotations which could be nice if you want a more competitive specialty right?

Do OMS1 classes end in early May too?

The last day for first years is May 30th. June 1st for the poor souls that have to do the med phys makeup exam.

You're given the computer, its in your tuition, and can't opt out. Some people use their own computers but you dont have the tech support at all if you use your own. The big place that's an issue is on exam days, which is risky if theres bugs in software (which has happened and locked us out of the system until they brought paper copies). I bought a macbook before coming because I wasn't sure where I'd end up and its kinda nice to have a work computer and a everything else one

Honestly it seems like DMU does less OMM than others, at least so far in first year. We usually have 1 50 min lecture and a 1.5 hour lab per week, and the labs rarely go full time.

There is a really nice surgical skills lab that you get into for second year. It was nicer than the other ones I saw while interviewing places.

There are lectures usually 8-noon every day, vast majority are not mandatory. Some days then you have labs in the afternoon for a few hours but its never a full 8-5. Like after anatomy ends really the only labs you have are some miscellaneous ones and then OMM. They only schedule classes between 8-noon and 1-5 though

Do it! It can only help you. I am probably giving up my seat in a week or two and I know that a lot of others will likely give up their seats once the MD waitlists start moving.

To be honest, the entire application to med school application process is kind of predatory. I'm not referring to any school in particular, but the whole process. Schools request secondary applications to get the $100 (or more) application fee, even if you're nowhere near qualified for an interview. Places make you jump through hoops to see how high you'll jump.

It doesn't get any better through med school, but again it's not necessarily school-specific. Resources are astronomically expensive because they're so specialized and because they can. For example, a 12-month subscription to sketchy is almost $400. Being a student puts you in a really vulnerable place, but it's worth it when you get to the other side. 🙂

I think MD applicants need to decide by April 30, so we should see more shifting the closer we get to the end of April.

There isn't really a final decision date if you're on the waitlist...there were people in my class who got pulled off May 2nd, and some that got pulled off random other times leading up to the first day of orientation. My buddy at another school got notice 3 days before classes started and had to move and start. There's a lot of movement on the waitlist too

Yep, save yourself some pain and get your MMR titers now. I was able to get MMR Varicella Hep B(Yay for being non immune) for 150ish. My insurance covered my menigitis/hep b/tdap and tb test as wellness benefits so didn't have to pay any

Yeah I was able to get my titers too, but now I have to get that 3-series Hep B

Yeah pretty much, the biggest difference is some schools want qualitative titers while the others require quantitative titers.

The committee meets on Wednesdays so I'm guessing we'll be sent our rankings on the 11th.

I emailed them about quartiles around 1 month ago and they said that they anticipate that all alternates will be notified of their placement by May 4th. I assumed that this meant it would be much closer to then (maybe late April), but who knows!

I heard that your class will be getting a nicer HP than our class though (heard a rumor of touch screens, but don't quote me on it) and although they aren't the best computer out there, I came to school with a really heavy older HP with a lot of glitches, so for me it has been wonderful! I use my laptop for everything and it is so light to carry around plus I have not had too many issues with it minus a couple upgrades that went south - I guess it depends on what you are used to for how much you will like the computers.

In case you're still curious, I interviewed on 2/1 and got the email about being on the alternate list on 2/28. Two months of waiting is rough! I hope that you hear some good news soon!
