2017-2018 Seton Hall - Hackensack Meridian

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ya. They don't record lectures but apparently we can record our own if we get permission first

As a general rule, due to the active methodologies utilized at the SOM, educational sessions are not audio or videotaped. In some very specific circumstances, sessions may be recorded and released to students. Students are permitted to audio and/or video record educational sessions at the SOM under the following conditions:
• Recordings are used strictly for personal use and are not shared with others
• Permission is obtained from the faculty member leading the educational session before the recording occurs
• Recordings are not distributed or posted on any media site unless written consent is obtained from the faculty members involved.
Hmmmm interesting. Im more of a "yeah yo'self" type learner but maybe the faculty is able to upload the recordings independently if they choose.

Has there been conformation of no secondary? Im trying to figure out how to send my updates

Has anyone who sent an email heard back? I emailed the director of admissions whose email is not on the website anymore and I don’t know if I should email admissions because I want to send an update...

Tbh, I don't think updates are going to make a difference here. They are already going to be extremely busy with our primary applications and trying to compile a class by July. I could be completely wrong though, so hopefully we find out soon.

I hope that isn't the case. I have made major improvements over the past 9 month and I think it would help them evaluate the applicants more. Maybe thats just my wishful thinking but Ive added triple digits to both clinical and community volunteering at organizations I love and have also gained major research experience which I had 0 on AMCAS. If they dont see that, its like this past year has been for nothing IMO

I agree it’d be great to have the option to submit an update, I think all of us have (hopefully) been improving our applications this entire cycle. Hopefully they start getting back to applicants soon and provide a portal or something but I wonder how they’ll manage it without a secondary application...

Honestly doesn't sound like that is very significant and the difference between admission or no admission. Many applicants have been working in some respect during the admissions cycle.

The contact information (email/phone) listed in the student handbook are not reachable.

It's more likely that updates will only be taken into consideration if you get on the waitlist since this is how a lot of other schools operate. They may be receptive to letters of interest though so maybe you could sneak it in there when they finally get back to us?

Also want to point out that the number on the SOM website is the general number and after being transferred to the SOM admissions office, it always goes to one person's voicemail no matter what time I called. I didn't leave a voicemail but if someone else wants to try it, they may call back. They're probably really busy going through apps right now

Based on their Admissions Process and procedures, they would have to accept students by April 15th -ish. Should we assume, we will hear something from them by next week?

I work in a research lab affiliated with this hospital. My PI forwarded an email he received regarding the medical school, they already received 400 applications in the first week.
I dont think thats too bad honestly. I remember submitting to a school early August and they had 4500 apps in the first month. I feel like less people will apply here cuz they 1. already have an acceptance 2. weary about going to a brand new school 3. may have accepted that they will apply again next cycle and will apply then instead of possibly being a reapp at the school.

can anyone familiar with the school's area share what it is like in Clifton and Nutley NJ? does the mission align with the potential opportunities where it is located?

From my searching, Its very close to NYC but still suburban. There are lots of opportunities in the city as well as the affiliated hospitals. And with a major hospital system and a UG association, there should be ample research opportunities. The undergrad has been established for a while and volunteer opportunities in both NYC and NJ will be more than enough. The hospital is also nationally ranked in 3 specialties and ranked #4 in the NYC metro area so its pretty impressive.

interesting. thats not so much. considering how many of those 400 will ultimately get off waitlists at other schools.

Totally true. On 3 waitlists right now, probably about to be on 2 more. It'll be hard for people to choose Seton Hall over their waitlisted schools due to the financial aid situation

Right but by the time people get off waitlists it will be well into seton halls admissions process right?

probably a good amount, although i know people applying who already have acceptances

If SHU was offering full rides like NOVA or Carle more people would apply and attend, but even with the discount their tuition is still steep.

Great for people without acceptances!
Edit: And people who want to stay in the area

I think people like the idea of possibly only 3 years and the optional 4th. 1 less year of taking out loans would save you probably like 65K max at this school for the first class not including the 30%. With that it would probably be closer to $120k if you do 3 years. Which would help a lot for people going into primary care where you dont need the research year and can save time and money (I sound like a car saleman now)

do you know if the early entry into residency after the third year is for all residency specialties? I have only seen other schools offer early entry if primary care.

Does anyone know when interviews may start?

or if there's a secondary?

Thanks

Im assuming it depends. Some specialties want you to have extensive research output while in school while others dont so I guess it depends on how competitive the program is. But I know a lot of schools allow you to take a research leave of absence for a year and you live off of a stipend and wouldnt be taking out as many loans like tuition/room and board/etc you wont be taking classes and the stipend usually includes room and board.

Do you know if, in the case of research year, students are required to do research within their home institution? Or can it be any institution of choice?
Im sure you can do away research much like you could in the summer after M1. I think they just leave the year to be flexible. Think of it like doing an away research elective like you can during M4 at most places. So I dont see any reason why they wouldnt allow it. May be in the student handbook tho

From the handbook:

"Students who choose to enter residency for their Phase 3 will only be able to enter residency programs within the Hackensack Meridian Health Network. This will be an option for students going into any field for which there is a residency within the HMH Network."

Also

"research-intensive concentrations will require students to develop objectives for their scholarly investigations in partnership with research mentors who will work with students to design curricular content appropriate to their goals and interests"

The handbook says students can get funding for research conferences among others. It doesn't say you can't tho. There's programs with the CDC and other universities that some people do, but it's much easier to get research opportunities at your home institutions.

It is kind of close to Montclair which is nice. Also close to Newark, which isn't. In a nutshell, it is close to nice and terrible areas simultaneously.

Anyone else concerned by the back to back STEP exams? Not sure what a normal amount of prep time for them is, but studying for two major exams one after the other sounds very burnout inducing. Potentially.

I have been told that STEP 2 is Ez Pz compared to Step 1 and you only need 2 weeks of studying for STEP 2

Well, that's reassuring. And otherwise, the curriculum sounds awesome.

I have no direct experience, here and no real insight , other than experiencing friends freaking out and studying many weeks for STEP 1.

I was actually thinking about asking if there would be any way to do the research year after STEP 1 much like Duke does it and like how other programs let you take a leave after M2. The research year at the end wouldn't have as much benefit in the match compared to doing productive research prior to submitting apps. Just a thought. And then STEP 1 and 2 would be spaced out.

Yes, this would seem to steer students more into the HMMH residencies.

Too many acronyms these days .

Hahaha. Valid point! But also, it's medicine, better get used to it?

HMMH = Hackensack Meridian ..(something with an M)... Hospitals/Health = the school linked health system

Sorry I'm too lazy to look up the actual words on my phone, but that's what vague acronyms are for, eh!?
