Does anyone know if you are considered for both the MD and MD/MPH program with the 2 day interview? Or do you have to schedule 2 separate interviews, 1 day for MD and 2 days for MD/MPH, 3 days total if you've been offered interviews to both?

The first day is for MD, and the second day is the interview for the MD-MPH program! So yes, considered for both within the two days of interviews. 🙂 When you schedule, you schedule for two consecutive days.

It's a little confusing. From when I interviewed 2 cycles ago, if you get an interview after applying for both programs then you have a single interview on day 1 that counts for both and then you basically hang out the 2nd day which takes place at the regional campus about 45 min away. If you applied MD/MPH only and got an interview, you hang out the first day (main campus) and then interview on day 2 (regional campus). I think that's how it went, but disclaimer: I'm not sure how this factors in if you only receive an MD/MPH interview and not an MD one since they are separate processes.

TLDR: Pretty sure you will only have 1 interview, which day depends on whether you are MD/MPH+MD or MD/MPH only. I am an old fart now though so I may have some details wrong, or things may have changed.

EDIT: Actually now that I think about it I think it's just that the majority of applicants interview on the 1st day and then a few do it on the 2nd day at the regional campus, regardless of which program you are interviewing for. Either way, only 1 interview.

EDIT2: Old fart brain starting to work again - MD only students will interview on day 1, majority of MD/MPH students will interview on day 1, and then a minority of MD/MPH students will interview on day 2 as the whole MD/MPH group (not MD) take a tour at the regional campus. I think that's right haha.

Ohh I see what you mean, my bad! I just assumed everyone who was interviewing MD-MPH was also interviewing for regular MD cause I thought it was default based on my own portal. Thanks!

I actually tried to call them to ask about this but was just a bit too late. I only got an interview scheduling thing for my MD/MPH status so I'm not entirely sure if I'm also going to be in consideration for MD, but from the wording it seems like I may since the scheduler thing showed MD first day and MD/MPH second day? Did your status change for both green 'your app has been reviewed' texts having disappeared? I still have that status under the MD portion of the portal so idk what is going on tbh lol

I have the same "Your application has been reviewed by the Admissions Committee and you have been selected for an interview." for both the MD and MD-MPH section! And I also have the four options I chose for interviews under each section, so they look the same. O: That's why I thought that it would be two days, but honestly I don't have many details since I didn't get the initial email. :/

Sounds like I only got an MD/MPH interview then, perfectly fine by me. But nah, you will only have 1 interview, the notes of which are used for both (totally separate) review panels. And you'll find out whether your interview is on day 1 or day 2 by looking over your folder which they give you once your arrive on the 1st day. On the day you don't interview, you just hang out and take in all the good vibes 🙂

Ah I would definitely call tomorrow just to make sure cause the wording does sound to me that you're also considered for Regular MD! And thanks for the insight! That does sound better than two days of interviews. :soexcited:

Hey guys so I just heard from a few current students that they recently got an email telling them that they are on "warning" for their LCME accreditation. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

This was brought up 3ish weeks ago. A current student from Miller commented on it and is below. Hope this helps.

"So I'm personally not concerned and I'll tell you why.

LCME comes every 8 years to re-accredit which is obviously a very necessary process to ensure adequate training and environment for students. With that said, medical education and it's workings are in a constant ebb and flow. I don't think there's any institution that operates at optimum capacity at all times in terms of LCME metrics. What were once the goals for improvement over one 8-yr cycle might completely change the following cycle. While trying to improve deficiencies from the previous cycle, I think it's reasonable to expect that other things may decline a bit when LCME comes back 8 years later.

Some areas that garnered an unsatisfactory rating were things like "sufficiency of buildings and equipment" and "comparability of education/assessment" between the different medical degree programs which were already being looked into prior to evaluation. It's not like admin is sitting on their hands despite what others will have you think and students still perform very well.

In terms of student mistreatment. I've never experienced it in the pre-clinical environment, haven't heard any horror stories, and can't yet speak to it in terms of clinicals. At any rate, I agree that this is concerning in a way and should be addressed accordingly. The point of a school is to house and be there for it's students. No one wants to pay to be mistreated unless you're into that kinda thing...😉

All in all, I'm agreeing that Miller needs to get it's act together on certain things but this knee-jerk reaction isn't necessary. I think it's also worth noting that all schools aren't reviewed on the same 8 year cycle so a school's results can be more pronounced a particular year. If I were betting man, I'd say "monitoring" and "unsatisfactory" ratings are relatively common after these things.

Not an expert in the accreditation process, just a student with $0.02. Hope it adds some clarity."

So after all that, why do ppl like this school so much? It isn't even ranked that high as a medical school but I think someone here said it was their top choice. I would be interested to hear why ppl like this school so much.

Location is great, they do well with matching into competitive specialties, p/f grading (with rankings), one of the top schools for us Floridians

Many schools have gone through stuff like this and have stood the test of time; I don't think it's a dealbreaker whatsoever. Definitely something to consider when deciding between schools, but I don't think it should entirely tarnish Miller's reputation.

Not sure prospective students should be worried at all. They were fully accredited for the next 8 years. I believe the warnings can be addressed and corrected during the 8 years with LCME issuing updates. Miami offers unmatched opportunities with the diverse population, resident matching, and hospitals on campus.

I think it's important to realize that other medical schools are also on probation like St. Louis University SOM. I can't speak specifically to UMMSOM, but usually, the warnings pertain to small infractions like failing to have written policies in place.

Hi all, I posted this question yesterday but it seemed to be washed out of view from the discussion of II, so I'm asking it again. I appreciate anyone who could provide feedback!

I've already submitted secondary a few weeks ago and am now considering applying for the MD/MPH program.

1. Is it too late in the cycle that my combined degree application won't be read by the adcom?
2. Will this submission have any beneficial or detrimental effect on my regular MD decision?
3. If I do end up applying for MD/MPH, should I go back to AMCAS and change the selection of program from "Regular MD" to "Combined Medical Degree/Graduate"?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

1. No. I actually interviewed MD-only mid-October, fell in love with the MD/MPH curriculum during the visit, and late-submitted that portion of the application maybe two weeks after my interview. Ended up getting in MD/MPH.
2. The two tracts are independent.
3. No, you need only update the actual UM portal.

Thanks for your input! Just curious, what about the MD/MPH curriculum that you absolutely fell in love with? Another question, how much earlier do classes start for MD/MPH cohort? The website says the summer prior to M1, but is it June, July or August?

What are the close hotels near the school? Also do they give discounts for people interviewing at Miami?

Well I initially contemplated getting my MPH as a postbacc option. After being introduced to the field in college, I always knew it was something I wanted to pursue at some point in my career. What made the curriculum so attractive was the idea that I got both in 4 years and it gave a holistic perspective to what I was learning medically. Plus you're guaranteed to come out of it with some type of research since that's the nature of the public health beast. It's a good amount of work but it's not unbearable. You do need to be sure that it's something you want to pursue though. You can't later decide to switch tracks; in order to graduate, you must complete both programs.

If you do pursue MD/MPH, the mph courses start 6 weeks before your medical coursework starts (that's also when the traditional track starts), so like late June.

The closest is the SpringHill Suites by Marriott Miami Downtown/Medical Center. I stayed there when I interviewed. There's a shuttle that comes like every 30 minutes or so that many patients use when they come into town to utilize UM/Jackson services. They do offer a discount. That's the only thing that's super close that I can reliably think of.

Thank you for the input. I'll keep these words in mind. A few more questions though, are MD/MPH students in the same medical coursework with the traditional track? Also, when you decided to apply for MD/MPH, did you need to fly back for that interview? Sorry for all the questions but I appreciate your input.

Has anyone received information about the biochemistry requirement if you are in the quarter system. I have only taken 1 quarter of it . . .

I contacted admissions about this. They said that if we have an extra quarter of o-chem, that will satisfy the biochem requirement.

1) I think they have a couple courses together, but otherwise the MD (150) and MD/MPH (50) people are on completely separate tracks
2) It's 1 interview, notes of which are used to evaluate your place in both programs. You find out if you're interviewing day 1 (main campus) or day 2 (regional campus) once you arrive on day 1

Im currently I contact with them about that since there's only two quarters of organic chem at my college. Trying to ask to substitute another course.

On a similar note, do writing intensive courses apply to the English requirement. I know I'm asking these questions a little late but I assumed their requirements would be standard like all my other schools

Did you take the o-chem lab as well? If so, that probably would count. And the answer to the English requirement should be yes too, same as all other schools.

Thank you for the information. If I understand correctly, I should plan to be on campus for 2 days if I'm ever invited for an interview?

Yes I took Ochem Lab. So I guess I would just listen my single biochemcourse since it says to not list any labs on the sheet. Thanks

No problem, I think that's how I entered my prerequisites too.

Current students, what is the daily dress code for class? I know anatomy requires a lab coat and clinicals have formal attire, but what about lecture days? Do people show up in shorts and flip flops or do you still need to dress in like a collar shirt and what not?

II as well! IS regular MD. Complete mid-july.
Over the moon excited - can't wait to celebrate with a pie, a peach pie - a nice cobbler.

I recommend Key Lime Pie or Flan in true South Florida style.

In terms of the preclinical curriculum, we do things separate for the most part as the curricula are slightly different. The most significant difference is PBL which plays a large part in ours on the scale of 3x/week whereas traditional track only have 1 week of pbl after each module. Also the modules do not align between the two.

MD: First two years - Miller School of Medicine Admissions
MD/MPH: First Two Years - Miller School of Medicine Admissions

The only time the curricula truly overlap is during the first two weeks of 2nd year - Derm/Ophtho module

We split up for 3rd year and small part of 4th year. MD/MPH have the option to finish out electives back at Miami campus once they've done their cores rotations at the regional campus (which I actually can't wait...teaching-physician to student ratio is higher from what I'm told)

No dress code whatsoever for lecture; we live in FL so flip flops are abundant lol. You don't have to look spiffy everyday but also keep in mind that you could run into the dean of the school or anybody else at any point so you might not wanna look like too much of a scrub haha.

For anatomy you can wear an old lab coat but most people just wear the required scrubs. Clinicals are always business casual/business.

Thank you so much for answering my questions!

If MD-only interview - a day
If MD/MPH - a day on the Miami campus and the following day on the Regional campus (2 days)

Only one interview though.

Hi guys, two questions:

  1. There was an email sent saying that you will get access to "The Hub" for interview information, but I never got it. Did you guys get it?
  2. Just to clarify, MD and MD/MPH admissions is completely separate right? Like their decisions to accept you isn't made based on which one they think you would be a better fit and then only accept you for that one program...

1) No hub email for me yet. It just gives interview day info so it's not really necessary until closer to the day.
2) Yup but the notes from the interview will be the same for the admissions committee(s) to review. And there have been people who were accepted to only one or the other in the past, it's not incredibly rare. But I don't think they will make judgments regarding fit to lead to a decision, it'll all be dependent on your total score (interview score + screening score that awarded you an II) and how you match up to other people on the list.

I submitted my secondary in July and I was reading it over and realized I made an error in the prereq section- I accidentally put the course number for organic chem 2 instead of my organic chem lab (a separate course). Do you think this will be a issue/do they look at the primary AMCAS to confirm this?

I would contact them but I don't think it will be a big deal.

I think that's actually a good thing? Because I don't think we're supposed to include lab courses in the online prereq section. Please let me know if I'm wrong though...

Yea I don't remember maybe I feel like i had it and deleted it maybe I actually did follow directions

Does anyone know how long it takes to be scored? My application has been under review for quite some time now.

I'm a reapplicant and my app from last year was never scored. 🙁 It still says "under review"

really? That's so interesting to me. You can still access last year's portal? Did you just apply really late?
I can still access all my portals from a couple of years ago lol. I can still reschedule my interview date :soexcited:
