I mean you can really live anywhere, but those are the most common buildings...places where you’ll find the most med students. You can go anywhere you like, just be sure to tour before you sign the lease. Miami can be a shifty city!

I would say maybe 15-20% of us live alone. I live in a 1 br, and although it costs way more it was important to me to not have a roommate. I shared a BEDROOM with a roommate all through college (4 dudes/1 bathroom too!), and vowed never to have another roommate again after graduation.

How much do 1 BR or studios go for in the area if you don’t mind me asking? I had the same experience and really want my own place in med school haha.

Haha yea I had a similar experience the first couple years with 4/1BR and 7 total to 2 bathrooms in an apartment. It was brutal lol. Definitely enjoy having my own space so I wanted to see what the norm was. Do you find that the community you live in/around is still strong and not lacking due to living alone?

Also, and most importantly, with the budget they give for housing on financial aid are you able to pay for rent? I received a merit scholarship of 10k/yr and I feel like that would help a lot of I needed to use more of my loan then allotted for rent. Just trying to think about logistics. Thanks for the help!

On average, with a roommate, people are paying between 11-1400. Singles are likely in the high teens, low 20's. I knew a classmate who was paying like 1800 for 1BR; I'm sure studios are somewhere in the mid-teens

If you take out the full cost-of-attendance, you'll be comfortable but with a roommate. Most of the spots have pretty decent square footage so it's not like you're living on top of one another. Living alone will be definitely stretch you thin if you're solely reliant on loans - in opinion, almost impossible (at least in the Brickell area)

In truth, Miami is probably more disposed to finding good deals than those other places (I’ve lived in NYC and live in Miami). I know a gentleman who rented a beautiful, brand new studio in brickell for like $1600, which was an incredible deal. He used a realtor and went after the condo owner market instead of the complex rented apartments (hint).

I haven’t had the slightest problem getting involved in the UM community, despite living alone. We are a VERY social med school, and people are always congregating at the local bars and restaurants in brickell. Lots of beach/rooftop pool BBQs, happy hours, trivia nights, etc.

As for price, it would be tough to spend more that 1700 (MAX) on living if you’re doing loans. I worked for a bit before med school and saved up a decent chunk of money which has supported the extra living costs. And next year I’m planning on moving in with my SO, so rent should drop substantially.

If your really dead set on living alone and are on loans, studio is probably the way to go.

Ya after looking at some of the apartments in brickell over the last couple of days I've realized having a roommate in a 2/2 would be totally fine. The apartments seem to be massive in comparison to what I pay to live in downtown SF. Decent living space and amenities. Pretty awesome to be honest lol it will definitely be a step up for housing which is great.

Interested in this as well. There are so many in Miami, and a lot are expensive/too nice and some are a little bit on the cheap side. Looking for a happy middle ground haha.

Currently, I'm staying in the brickell area, there were a couple by the hospital but they were kind of expensive and not as miamy-y as I wanted 😛
 
II today! Complete 8/24 and LM ~67. My first pick was a date in March because I couldn't get off work any earlier. Fingers crossed that the later interview date won't significantly hurt my chances, like some of you reassured us on here 🙂

They do indeed love updates and now is the time to get them in because the waitlist is ranked and letters at that point don’t affect where you are on the list, once you are placed all you can do is pray that you’re near the top

I was given interview dates from the last week of February up to late March, would all of these dates hear back on the same acceptance date or would the Feb dates possibly hear back first? I got the 3/12 date and I'm worried it's too close to the 3/21 acceptance date to get any feedback that day.

It's hard to say! When I interviewed on 1/8 they said they wouldnt be able to get to us on the next committee day (1/17) but then I got the call, so it might also work in your favor 🙂 best of luck!!!

Yeah, you were totally supposed to respond earlier with a “how do you know that?” type question, whereupon I would have said something clever about how I pulled a mind trick on you, easing your baseline anxiety in a relative way by inducing an anxiety peak.

Either way, good intentions, bad form! Ce la vie.
 
There was some talk earlier in this thread about UM's LCME warnings. While I wasn't overly concerned, I did stumble across some really great resources on their website yesterday. They made town halls with MS3s and MS4s available to watch (among other helpful resources). They provide some good information and the videos allow applicants see how they're interacting with the student body about rectifying the warnings.

Very interesting. Also MS1/2 schedules for MD and MD/MPH programs. It looks like there really is no overlap between classes

I’m not sure that’s the case. I assumed they moved everything back a week because of the hurricane. However, I haven’t thought about it much.

That's the only thing that makes sense. I thought they announce acceptances by accepting the top 20 of the applicant pool. How could one interview group have their own acceptance day?
 
Accepted earlier this week with an email! The portal still says a final admissions decision will be available shortly lol but I guess I'll still trust them. Also what's canelink am I supposed to make a new account somewhere?
