Hey guys! Did any of you receive further info on your interview after receiving an invite to The Hub? I see that they have the schedule and a map on there, but I didn't get any details about where to meet first. Do we get any more emails leading up to the day?

Also, if anyone who interviewed would be kind enough to provide some insight on how you prepared/first impressions, please DM me!

Would a pre-II letter of interest be worth anything here (maybe in combination with an update)? Would really really like an interview invite here, and I know some schools are receptive to that kind of thing.

I sent one in conjunction with an update - at the beginning of January. I’ve heard absolutely nothing. Pretty sure my cycle is over...

Does anyone know if the MD/MPH interview format differs form the MD interview?
Online it says that for the MD program you are only interviewed by 1 person and it is supposed to be conversational. Is this the case for MD/MPH as well?

Thanks!

Yep! You interview with one person for 30-60 mins; that's it.

I interviewed at UM on Friday (2/16) and I loved this school so much!! My interviewer threw some interesting questions at me, and I definitely got nervous while answering one or two of them...I hope I make it!

Any insight on when MSTP decisions will be made?
Probably sometime very soon? My MD/PhD application portal status changed this weekend (either Saturday 2/17/18 or yesterday 2/18/18) from being reviewed one last time to the "Your application has been reviewed by the MD/PhD Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At this time, a final decision has not been reached on your application" status.

Is anyone's application still being reviewed by the committee?
Pretty much simultaneously, my MD application update appeared out of no where and spat out the "We hope you enjoy your visit to our campus. Your final Admissions Committee decision will be available shortly. Contact the admissions office at 305-243-3234 or *their email address* if you do not receive a telephone call, an e-mail or a letter within seven days" response.

Edit: I interviewed on the last MD/PhD interview date, which was 1/26/18. MD/PhD applicants interview with both the MD/PhD committee and MD-only committee on the same date.

I interviewed on the last MD/PhD interview date (for both MD/PhD and MD), which was 1/26/18.
Just to clarify, their last MD interview date for the entire cycle was 01/26?? So why am I still following this thread????

Shoot. I apologize--I should have phrased that better! It was the last MD/PhD interview date (there are definitely more MD-only interview dates). That day, I interviewed with both the MD/PhD committee and MD-only committee, which is the standard practice for MD/PhD applicants.

Long time lurker... really hoping for an interview here! Do you know if sending an additional recommendation letter from a gap year position is something UM is receptive to, or even appropriate Pre-II?

Honestly I don't see why not lol especially if you're in the same position as some of us here and are still under review. I would submit it if I were you. You never know if something like that could be difference maker for your application

FYI they ask you to have your recommender email in an additional LOR to their admissions office!

I just submitted the additional LOR through AMCAS and didn't ask me for the email. This was for an update letter I sent in Dec/Jan.

Interesting. I sent one a week ago or so and called the office and they requested it be sent to their email address.

So you saw your letter of Rec? Aren’t you supposed to say that you don’t know what your writer said and sign a waiver? Sounds like somethings off.

ATTENTION PLEASE: Ifyou have already gotten into your top choice, do not seriously plan to attend, or for other reasons, cannot or do not want to attend UMiami Miller SOM but have already received an interview invite, PLEASE CANCEL YOUR INTERVIEW ASAP, someone else's cycle depends on it!!!!! I wish you the best of clairvoyance towards moving forward, thank you!

No. Again, as Miami told me to do when I called them, my recommender attached the letter as a PDF with my name and AMCAS ID and emailed it to Miami.

Any disadvantages to interviewing late here or is each interview group treated the same?

You’re all treated the same. Once you have an interview score to augment your app score you go onto the master list and there’s no penalty for being later in the cycle.

Our system is a little weird but the idea is it provides max fairness to all applicants based on the merits of their app rather than their II Date.

That said, late interviews have fewer potential admission dates available to them, which could be seen as a little bit of a disadvantage to later interviewees. Not really a way to get rid of this though, without doing away with rolling admissions all together :/

I know the school isn’t obliged to give me an interview, but if I’m paying them $125 (primary and secondary fees) I’d at least appreciate being told that my file was reviewed but not ultimately chosen for interview. I don’t like silent rejections.

Well, if I assumed correctly on what's coming for me, silent pre II rejection beats a silent post II rejection lol

Does anyone know how update letters are treated? Do they change the score that we were given initially? I have multiple pubs that were accepted and was wondering if it would help at all.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! I've just got one more question to follow up. The last admissions date seems to be 3/21, so does that mean that everyone is placed on the alternate list after that date? I'll be interviewing in early March so I'm trying to gauge my chances. I know some people aren't accepted one date but can be accepted at a later acceptance date; however, it seems that those of us that interview late will just have one opportunity for acceptance, unless they accept after that date as well.

Quick note just wanna be clear I don’t speak for admissions - I’m just a random student so don’t take my word as anything more than that.

Everyone at Miami is placed on the same “master list” after their interview date. Then the top X number of students on the master list are accepted on each acceptance date. So in reality EVERYONE is on the same list. If you dont get accepted on that first acceptance date after your interview, then you'll get an email saying youre on the "wait list"...however this really the same list you were on before. This happens for everyone, regardless of when you interview, and each acceptance date all the newly interviewed students are considered with everyone else - all on an equal footing.

After the last acceptance date, UM will transition to rolling admissions, and take people off the top of the list as spots become available rather than waiting for designated "acceptance dates" (this happens mostly after the AAMC multiple acceptance deadline in late April).

Sorry its so confusing, but the important thing to take away is that UM has a somewhat complicated system that allows students to be considered based on the merit of their app, regardless of when they interview. Unfortunately med schools do admissions on a rolling basis, and theres only so many people we can interview at a time.

Random question for a friend- does anyone know the average age of matriculants at UM for the past couple yrs? Thanks!

Pharaoh you got an II this week?

This is incredibly helpful. Thank you for clearing things up!!

Not 100% sure but the avg age is around 25 I think. But that’s gonna be skewed up by maybe 10-20 older people in the class.

In my (non statistical) experience I’d say the average student has ~1 gap years.

I've probably given this more thought than necessary, but I encourage you not to look at it this way. Hear me out:

I'm a reapplicant. I've reapplied two times. This is my third time applying to UM, and it's one of the few schools I've applied to three times. In my first cycle, I was pretty upset. I was bummed, maybe a little depressed, and I looked for things to which I could shunt my emotions. I, in all likelihood, had similar sentiments to yours. But what I've learned through this erratic, painful and soul sucking process is that these little gripes are completely insignificant. The difference between the most communicative school and the least is probably a simple mass email script that fills in your name at the push of a button. At most, one school will have one or two secretaries more. Basically, no program I've ever encountered has a significant difference on the values they try to project to candidates. The only difference is the infrastructure they put in place a years before. You might say that could be indicative of their diligence, but honestly, the application process moves so incredibly fast for admission committees that when one cycle is over, they are in full swing on the next one. I imagine that it's really hard implementing big changes, and especially so in communications where there's likely no buffer time to fix mistakes.

Bottom line, admissions committees, from what I've been told, are never profitable. The money they make from your app fees are less than the money they spend on admissions staff and overhead. They do the best that they can and rely extensively on volunteered time. If you like a school enough to apply, keep applying and don't read into the small stuff.

I'm sure you'll find your place, so try to keep your head up and your integrity intact. I'm rooting for you! Lemme know if I can help.
