2017-2018 University of Pittsburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
As far as interviews go, it doesn't seem like there's much of a bias against OOS. It is private.

Technically Pitt is public, but they don't majorly give preference to IS students. They certainly are very holistic in their approach, which I really like. I feel like my classmates are so different but it makes us more cohesive.

If you don't mind me asking, different in what way?

We come from so many backgrounds, from students that have experienced homelessness to those who are extremely wealthy. We've had people who have made a lot of mistakes and those that took your usual route. We have those neurotic people and quite a few people who know how to get down. We have research fiends and then people like myself who hate research (came here to get out of my comfort zone). We have cool kids and dorks. We are different in every way, which I guess is normal at most schools. But we embrace the differences and actually focus on doing events that others like that we don't to bond as a class. Pitt takes your whole life story into account. I wasn't top of my class GPA-wise, did well on my mcat, had a hella complicated upbringing and I feel they took all that into account.

Ah okay, that's pretty cool. Thanks for the detailed answer.

Our classes are very diverse, but there is absolutely a regional bias for admissions. Even more so in recent years. Typically 20-25% of the class will have significant ties to Pittsburgh or western PA.

How about eastern PA?

I’m kind of disappointed that I didn’t tell them my extended family lives in wheeling and works in Pittsburgh 🙁

I was not not rejected! My first, but can’t say I’m too disappointed, I’m just thankful to have have a few II’s from other schools thus far... LizzieM ~70, URM

Not sure. We do have a lot of people from Philly, central PA, Ohio, Maryland. At that point, I'm sure there is some selection bias of who actually applies to Pitt. I'm talking about doing undergrad at Pitt/CMU/Duquesne or growing up within an hour of the city.

Don't sweat it, it doesn't factor that much into interview invites. If you get an interview, mention it to all your interviewers. Honestly though, that's a weak connection (see above).

Source: We have M2-M4 adcoms

I was just rejected this week - I even had an update ready to go. Oh well... I agree it was a weak connection so I didn’t list it in my application.

Did you guys get a complete email from them? My status in the portal says "Invited to complete a supplemental application." It then shows that I submitted my secondary and paid on 9/7 and that my letters were received on 9/1. Is this normal? Thanks!

I never received a complete email.

regional bias appears to be a thing. I attended Penn state

They like people who they think will like Pittsburgh. There's still a good deal of people who either went to Pitt for undergrad or grew up in Pittsburgh in the first year class. However, I also think it is more common for people to actually matriculate here if they are familiar with the area. There are also still a lot of OOS people for a public school. Dr. Parino has said that they try not to let OOS v IS matter much.

I interviewed here like 3 weeks ago and just wanted to say it was an extremely chill experience. Both the student and faculty interviews were conversational and 0 on the stress level.

Anything in particular we should prepare for? Like qs about our research? Or no prep necessary?

It's probably pretty dependent on the interviewer, but I was asked questions about my research and other aspects of my app, so I'd just read over everything you gave them.

Why Pitt? What led you to decide on medicine? Tell me about your clinical experiences? Also get ready to compete with a bunch of nervous premeds for the mic in the group discussion activities. Don't be that guy/gal that's always talking and trying to dominate the conversation. Read UWash Bioethics. It's generally pretty chill. Wear something you're comfortable to walk up and down hills in.

Just interviewed here and WOW. I knew it was my first choice but the interview day was phenomenal. Everyone legitimately wanted to make everyone feel welcome and they want to make sure that you will be happy there. 10/10, couldn' have been better!

Is it better to schedule the soonest interview date available or does it not matter?

Earlier is best, they admit that they accept on a rolling basis...They just don't release decisions until Jan 31. So in my eyes earlier is better.

Interviewed today too 🙂 Trying to think who the marine MD was

Well they said rolling acceptances kinda on the fly. What I and the others took from that is they do. I could have taken it wrong. Definitely don' want to alarm anyone.

Honestly that's how they made it seem for us too. I was at one of the first interview dates and they heavily implied that chances of acceptance were higher because we interviewed early. I thought maybe they were just trying to be nice but if they do rolling type admissions that makes sense...

Oh! I didn't know that, sorry!

They have said that they try not to let that have any say over their decision, and try to be fair to everyone. Earlier certainly can't hurt though. Imo, I interviewed the literal last week and I know there's two of us from my date that are current MS-1's. It's not impossible by any means, but give yourself every advantage you can.

anyone who interviewed get to see the city? Or where students live? Im going soon... I heard its up and coming but...

The city is actually pretty great. The buses are free for students and many students I spoke with even bought houses because it's actually pretty affordable there. There is an apartment complex across the street from the med school where a lot of 1st years live. The downtown area is just a $10 ish uber/lyft away and there are tons of things to do. plus the steelers pirates and penguins...

it's obviously not NYC or chicago. i appreciated that pittsburgh is big enough without being overcrowded though and i'm not really interested in being someplace surrounded by millions of people and high population density
