Do you know when scholarship apps open, and when those awards are doled out? Also, just to clarify, the only merit/need based aid UW gives is through scholarships such as the SOM scholarship, and not automatic grants, etc like other schools do?

They give grants that are need based and go off your FAFSA with parent information. If you get this, then you get less scholarship money later on. If you don’t fill out the parent information then you don’t get the grant.

The scholarship stuff happens in like February of next year.

The scholarship and grant potentially add up to like $12,000. If you don’t get a grant then you get all scholarship money to add up to that. If you get a grant, then you get like $1000 from the scholarship. These amounts are rough estimates from when I attended and vary based on your year.

And these amounts just take place of loan money. They don’t add additional money to the financial aid picture.

Financial aid award letters went out today but on mine it was just Stafford and Grad Plus. You're saying that there are additional scholarships later on that we can apply for through the school? I only got like 15k above tuition to cover the cost of living for a year.

Sounds about right. Remember, that’s for 9 months of living, not 12 months.

Wow such a little amount. They actually took money away from me too. Nope. My wife had a full time job and it didn’t change anything except me having less debt from not paying for living expenses and using the extra aid for tuition alone.

I’m actually headed to the Spokane campus so I’m not really worried about transportation or even rent. I’m more concerned about unexpected finances, costs of having a car, or the cost of books. How much do students spend on books?

First two years, an atlas an First Aid is all you need. The school will give you a syllabus that is all the information you need. That’s about $150 total.

Third year, probably more around $400.

Fourth year nothing.

I don't really think it's a combination at this school. It's not like high stats will offset lack of ECs or a less than stellar interview. Especially for IS. High stats might help a little to get your foot in the door if you are a OOR but you can have a near 4.0 and 99th percentile on the MCAT and still get rejected if you don't have good ECs or a good interview. Happens a lot actually. Get some good shadowing or scribing, research, etc. It's more important how you reflect on these things in your application and interview (don't just list tasks and duties under EC descriptions like a resume. Treat each description like a mini essay). IE: if you started a free clinic in Haiti but don't seem to have gotten anything out of it, you're not going to be better off than someone who scribed at their local hospital and can show epiphanies, inspiration, things they learned, how it shaped them, etc. Imo, roughly 80-90% of what you put in your ECs should show an arrow pointing to a career in medicine. The rest should be what sets you apart and makes you unique and stand out in the class (music, art, travel, quirky hobby, etc.). This will also make your interview easier because you have already thought out how your ECs shaped you and as a plus, they can spend more of the 30 min talking about your cooking class or Frisbee club, and less on grilling you about health care policy. From talking to people that have been on the board of admissions, how the interview goes (once you get one) really is the most important here and many schools.

Unfortunately it isn’t. People interviewing in Spokane are considered a cohort, hence have a different process. I don’t remember all the details but it was explicitly stated in the secondary application. In the past people have interviewed in Spokane and then tried to get a spot in Seattle, so UW had to change the rules. Of course if you have some special circumstances that just happened and will prevent you from attending that specific location UW might work with you.

Thank you for the insight. Thankfully, I am a current clinician and have spent a lot of time writing about meaning gained from my ECs for my two other degrees. I will be sure to keep this at the forefront and tie it into medicine when filling out my applications. Thank you for your response!

With top 10? You should be celebrating. I would think 10-20 are also celebrating, 20-30 are cautiously optimistic, 30-40 and beyond are in for a stressful spring

I asked about previous years' waitlist data, and the admissions office replied, "in recent past years we have accepted between 30-45 alternates, the past few years are: 2017 - 30, 2016 - 32, 2015 - 29, 2014 - 37, 2013 - 43." She then clarified, "the 30-45 range is Washington and out of region applicants combined. The other WAMI states have separate individual alternate lists for their states."

My understanding is that Seattle/Spokane have separate alternate lists. The Spokane ranked alternate list came out mid January after that site finished interviews, while it looks like the Seattle one only came out recently.

I know someone who wrote Seattle was their preference but would go to either site and was placed in Spokane last year. I think it's a really small number who get moved and probably only people who say they would attend either site!

However, if too many people apply to one location and they end up with too many acceptances, they may shuffle people around. Last year, too many people applied to the Seattle location, so some had to be sent to Spokane. This year, too many people applied to the Spokane location. So we'll see what they do.
