2017-2018 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got an email this morning saying "The Admissions Office has reviewed your application and requires verification of your Washington state residency". In region and submitted secondary yesterday. Going to drop off materials tomorrow, does anyone know how long it takes for residency verification?

How does weighted gpa work? As in honors courses count more?

Hey friend; that's not what it means. It means they calculate each year in a specific way, giving you an advantage if you have an upward trend. It used to be on the website; I couldn't find it this time but this is the formula from an old thread:

"The undergraduate GPA is weighted to give credit to applicants whose records show improvement as they progress through their undergraduate studies. Only the first three years are included in this calculation as most applicants have just begun their senior year. The weighted GPA is calculated on a standard 4-point scale with 4.00 representing an "A" average.
CUM. Freshman GPA x 1 = A
CUM. Sophomore GPA x 2 = B
CUM. Junior GPA x 3 = C

(A+B+C)/6 = Weighted GPA

An initial automated screening is done of all applications. The WGPA is added to the mean MCAT score converted to a 4.0 scale so that the maximal "Combined score" =8. If this combined score is less than 5, the application is automatically screened out. If your application falls into this category, but you have subsequently taken additional coursework and have a stronger subsequent GPA, you may be eligible for reconsideration. Please contact our office for more information."

Fantastic info! Thanks for sharing it 🙂

How does the GPA work for post-bac?
The GPA only includes the first 3 years of college and is most useful as an initial automated screening tool. Subsequent grades are taken into consideration when manual screening is done. If you are screened out immediately and have a low initial GPA, but subsequent better grades, please let our office know.

they're one the few schools to use a weighted gpa

also, nice doggos ^_^

Thanks!! Love these little monsters. The science nerd in me ended up naming the white one "Beaker." Seriously, I named my dog after chemistry glassware, and just tell people he's named for the muppets character. The brown one's name is "Turtle." Best name ever for a spastic Aussie shepherd.

Just received the Washington state verification yesterday. When they write that they require "A true and correct copy of your state and federal income tax return" and of your parents' tax return, do I need to request that from the IRS? Or can I send them a copy of the tax return that I/my parents e-filed? Thanks!

I think a copy is okay. That is what I am submitting

I submitted my primary app on 7/4 and AMCAS still hasn't verified it (all my letters and transcripts were in at that time). Is this the case for anyone else...?

Check your status on the AMCAS website. For today, it says "Processing applications that reached “Ready For Review” status on - June 28, 2017."

Also, remove your photo for anonymity.

First rejection, woohoo!! good luck everyone else

"As an out-of-region candidate, you did not meet the criteria for further consideration to the MD program.
Please know that as a public institution, we have a strong preference for applicants from the WWAMI region (those with legal residence in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.) This means that it is significantly more competitive to gain admission as an out-of-region applicant."

Just as an FYI, I contacted the admissions office when I sent in my primary about my postbac gpa being significantly better, and somehow made it through without getting rejected by auto screen, which I should've been. They sent me a secondary about a week ago.

Does anyone know if you should wait to turn in your secondary until residency verification goes through? I thought I read that somewhere but I can't remember. I know they won't look at your secondary until the verification goes through however.

They didn't write "Thanks for the Donation" at the bottom? 😛

When did you turn yours in? I submitted mine on the 11th and nothing.

anybody else still not even get the darn mission statement request...?

Just got the rejection from their MD program OOS applicant with a 528 MCAT. Both my parents went here and I really really wanted to as well but I guess that's life! Best of luck to everyone still in the hunt! Crush them secondaries/interviews for me

Damn. I guess they aren't blowing smoke with their mission statement.

Also rejected last night, OOS, LizzyM ~75, never got the mission statement request or anything. Best of luck this cycle, everyone!

Hmm I wonder if that means they put me in a "Maybe" pile since I turned in mine almost a week before that.

I was thinking the same thing since I submitted around the same time. It's been two weeks. I would give them three weeks like they said in the e-mail.

After much deliberation, I submitted my secondary with a spokane preference. I hope that choice doesn't hurt my chances down the road. It was tough to interpret their interview/acceptance stats between campuses as they presented them in the secondary.

Yea

Yeah, just seems weird they have "skipped" over my submission date. Hopefully it's a good sign...

Has any OOR MD applicant receive a secondary yet? Or is everyone still waiting after submitting the mission statement?

Yeah unless there is someone who has gotten one that just has not posted.

Everyone OOS, go check out their admissions stats. In 2016 out of 7400 OOS applicants, only 122 received an interview and 15 matriculated. Don't feel discouraged if this school rejected you pre-secondary as it is hyper-competitive. It happened to me as well with LizzyM - 77. Best of luck everyone!
