2017-2018 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks! I was hoping to get the actual source data just to evaluate how confident I should or should not feel
With top 10? You should be celebrating. I would think 10-20 are also celebrating, 20-30 are cautiously optimistic, 30-40 and beyond are in for a stressful spring

Is there a possibility of good news? Or is it pretty much certain we’re getting rejected...

Is there any chance for those of us without portal updates? 🙁

My suspicion is that it's not good. From previous years, it seems like that acceptance calls went before the alternate lists came out.

Do they send out more acceptances than their class can hold or the exact number and then defer to the alternate list?

Given their matriculation yield and the WL movement I think they give out close to the exact number of acceptances and then pull after declines. UW has a crazy high yield of acceptance—>matriculation

I wonder if that matriculation includes acceptances offered via waitlist too? Or if the matriculation rate is measured from those given out on March 15...

Can someone post the link to the tables that were posted about the waitlist callups??

The portal says that the waitlist-list wont be published until the first waitlisted person is accepted.
"Once we have accepted our first Washington/out-of-region alternate, the current status of the Washington/out-of-region alternate list will appear below. We anticipate that there will be most movement around April 30th when applicants can only hold one medical school acceptance."

Well I'm #51 didnt know they had that many people. Not gonna lie that stings. I'm going to reapply this next cycle and get some feedback from several schools. To those accepted go rejoice and celebrate you've earned it. To those in the back of the waitlist and rejected hold your head high. Just making it this far is a statement of your resolve to do this thing.

Not saying I'm the best person to give out advice, but some people on last yr's thread really helped me recover from my rejection last yr. Pls pls pls feel free to reach out to me and I'd be glad to help you review your primary, sec and mock interviews, anything needed. Keep that chin up and believe in yourself! This is not the end of the world.

I'm in the early thirties on the alternate list and don't know whether I should start studying for the MCAT to prep for next app cycle.

You guys have been such a support thus far and are going to amazing doctors, whether med school starts this year or next or the year after that. We don't give up on our dreams! And I am with @mybluedog I would be happy to brain storm/help when I can (though clearly I am not top of the game) sometimes talking things out helps!

Nah, I’d wait until May

Rejected post-interview. Sad day. I feel very lucky to have made it this far in the process though, considering I was initially screened out for my low gpas. Seems like that doesn’t happen often. I really do think this school tries to practice a holistic approach as much as possible. I’m bummed, but, still gonna be a doctor!!! Congrats to everyone that is celebrating today! Go dawgs!

@1211926 My last name is actually toward the end of the alphabet, I'm sorry 🙁
@applesaucy I got my email earlier this afternoon!
@catsarewhereitsat My portal changed after I saw my email and got into the portal, per the email's instructions.
Good luck everyone! You can do it!

I know @BABSstudent had a google doc going about waitlist movement over the past few years but the link I have says it's no longer available. For some clarification for folks I think I also remember them saying that the # they accept off the waitlist is not necessarily the last waitlist position they accepted since people further up on the list may have declined a seat.

So for example, if 20 are accepted, the last waitlist position taken may have actually been #27

Can you link the doc? I have UW permissions so I think I may be able to access it..

Alternate list - but top 10 - I'm so excited! And very, very grateful.

Congrats to all of those that are accepted and alternates with a favorable ranking. Best of luck for everyone else - whether it's for other schools or reapplication next year. I know of quite a few success stories with reapplication - hang in there!

So is top 10 fairly certain to be a future acceptance? I'm super hesitant to celebrate, but would love some encouragement after this taxing wait

I shared what I was doing while waiting for the decision so I might as well share what I am doing after getting that R (Glenfiddich 15 yr for the inquiring minds out there)!

Does anyone know if other foundations sites (mainly interested in Spokane) have an alternate list? If so, how many?

Potential future reapplicant here, just curious.

I second this... I would think top 10 would be a sure thing and we should be celebrating right now just based on the numbers accepted in the past, but I would think that alternates are pulled for each state as seats from each state become available, rather than in the exact ranked order. So for example an Idaho applicant number 1 on the alternate list (which is combined?) would not actually get pulled first if a Washington seat was what opened up. If that is how it works I think our place on the ranked list becomes a less clear predictor of our chances.

I am Washington where hopefully there will be a good number of seats opening up anyway so not super worried about it, but also just looking for a lil certainty! If anyone has a clearer idea how this works, pleeeeease share. 🙂

From what I understand the alternate lists are separated. Washington/OOR is one group, then one list for Wyoming, one list for Alaska, one for Montana, and one for Idaho. So your number on the alternate list is only for the cohort that you applied for.

ok, thanks!

@BombsAway I believe according to MSAR, the median matriculant is 507 with 502 being the 25th percentile but thanks for the reply! It seems like UW very much takes into consideration ECs and real world clinical experience. With accepting 502s I'm assuming they feel their curriculum is very good at preparing for board success. I may be interpreting that wrong though.

So are you competing for spots with your campus alternate list only? Also, does anyone know if there is data of how many people rejected their spot on the waitlist ie how many spots the end of the list moved up as people had to choose another school? That might not make any sense Im really grasping at straws before giving up all hope.

I would agree with this. It seems like they put a premium on real-world experience and service. They also care much more about academic trends than GPA it seems.

So I could not stand the anticipation anymore and just called the admission office.
For anyone who is on the alternate boat, this is the data from previous years for Seattle cohort, numbers of acceptance from alternate:
- 2017 cycle: 30
- 2016 cycle: 32
- 2015 cycle: 29

*Each site has a specific alternate list and ranking (ex: Seattle has a different alternate list than Idaho or Wyoming)
*The adcom said this number is fluctuating each year, but on average is 30 students/year so gotta wait until April or May
*Adcom was super nice: tell us not to check the portal obsessively (Emphasis on the "obsessive") lol gotta love the school!

I just called admissions to get a little more info. The matriculation rate (90%+ or something) is the matriculation after ALL acceptance offers have been made, measured in August. So that includes those from the alternate list. The person I spoke with said they tend to take about 30-40 people off of the alternate list. She was very encouraging about being high on the list, she said this without ambiguity.

I did ask if we would be able to attend the second look day, considering the likelihood of admission at this point, which she politely replied to with a no. She explained that it was due to financial constraints on lunches, etc.

Anyways, you should probably celebrate! Although it is a mouthful to explain the full reason for celebrating to your friends, haha. If you're in Seattle, enjoy this wonderful, sunny day.

For the foundational site essay, if we interviewed in spokane and want to change preference to seattle or vice versa, is that even possible?

Any current students on here that took the pre-matriculation week? Just wondering if it was worth it.

I believe the pre-mat program wasn’t funded for several yrs. I think the last one might’ve been 2013. (I could be wrong) I heard they wanted to start one for e-18. I heard it’s super helpful and my friend who is a m4 said it prepared them more for first yr.
