For MSTP:

Please describe the research that you would like to do as an MSTP student at the University of Wisconsin to prepare you for a career as a researcher and leader in medicine. This may include specific scientists, laboratories, facilities or programs. (Limit response to 500 words.)

For all:

Optional Essay
The Admissions Committee takes many factors into consideration when reviewing your application. A successful applicant is frequently one who communicates what makes them exceptional and why they will become an outstanding physician. You are invited but not required to provide additional information in this essay.

Some applicants tell us about hardships and challenges that they have faced in their lives and how these experiences have helped them become caring and compassionate individuals. Other applicants use this space to emphasize a particular passion they have related to their future career in medicine. If you are not a resident of Wisconsin, you may want to tell us why you are interested in the University of Wisconsin or about a special connection that you may have to our state or people who live here.

Our goal is to gain insight into you as a unique applicant. You may include anything in this essay that you feel is relevant. (Limit response to 500 words.)

Good luck to everyone applying!

I'll be joining the Badger Community at UWSMPH this fall and would like to make myself available to answer any questions you may have about the application/interview process. Feel free to message me on SDN. Wishing you all the best!

Thank you for the offer of help. I am a re-applicant and wisconsin is my top choice but I am unsure how I will be viewed as a re-applicant. Also, for the secondary - should it be significantly different than what I wrote last year?

Based on several examples I've seen, being a re-applicant is definitely not viewed in a negative manner at UW- rather, it shows dedication and commitment. Are you IS or OOS? And did you receive an II last cycle? If so, reach out to the admissions team and ask for feedback.

As for your question about the secondary essay, I'm not sure if you need to make significant changes-sorry (consult a premed adviser or the admissions team). However, there is an additional REQUIRED essay for re-applicants. Be sure to highlight the ways in which you've strengthened your application. Be genuine, talk about what makes you unique, describe whatever connections you have to WI/Madison, show your commitment to practicing medicine in WI, integrate the mission statement into your essays, etc.

For everyone: I know everyone says this, but I can't emphasize enough the importance of making yourself stand out. And UW has one of the most holistic review processes, which shows that metrics aren't the only thing that matter. Of course, the MCAT and GPA are important, but they also love to see unique extracurriculars and how your life experiences have shaped you into who you are today.

Best of luck!

Thanks and this helps! OOS, received II but on waitlist, also got some feedback from the admin office.

I have seen that they have rejected a lot of high stats applicants for what seemed to be no ties to the state. Would it be worth it to apply with no ties? I have a unique diversity statement which is mixed with an adversity statement but do you think the lack of ties would be a killer?

I did a summer research internship at UW-Madison and loved the place. Is that enough of a tie to apply as OOS?

Yes, that is true- many applicants (regardless of IS status) with above average-high stats have been rejected. There's not really much we can do if we don't have any connections.... but this is where the holistic review process comes in- has an applicant had any unique life experiences that make them stand out from the thousands of other academically strong candidates? Any hardships that have influenced your desire to pursue medicine. Be sure to include this in your secondary if you haven't already done so in your primary. Additionally, you may want to talk about what attracts you to Madison/UW-SMPH (research opportunities, desire to work with under served populations through TRIUMPH/WARM programs, etc) and how you could contribute.

I sure would think so! Even better if the research was medical related and conducted at WIMR/UW Hospital, or somewhere on the medical campus. You may want to consider a LOR from your PI!

Hope this helps!

Please note that I will have limited internet access over the next week- I'll try my best to respond in a timely manner before/after.

Just received notification that they received my application. According to their email, anyone with a 504 on a single test administration of the MCAT and attained an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 will receive a secondary.

I got the same notification. I am an OOS non-trad re-applicant and received a secondary and interview invite in the past, so hoping they give me another shot. UW Madison is my top choice school!

IS. Received the secondary. Will wait until the date in August for IS submission.

I'm guessing I'll have to call but just in case anyone's already asked or saw it somewhere, should we list our study abroad school under "colleges attended"? It pre-populated "other" with "FR" for city and state with the correct dates but all my credit went through my normal school so I'm inclined to leave it blank...

Secondary received this morning. OOS reapplicant. Previously interviewed but was rejected. This has always been my top program, so I'm pretty excited to give it another shot!

I think so

Thank you - I saw that program too when I tried to look it up, just wasn't sure if it was the same thing and didn't want to commit to anything. Seems like it doesn't matter too much if I say yes or no because you apply during fall of M1 year.

How are you supposed to put in weekly hours for things that are not continuous, AKA basically all of my activities? I have a lot that I do just during the school year, or just during the summer as well as shadowing experiences that happened over a large range of times.

I was also confused by this - I just added to the text from my AMCAS with a short explanation.

So you added like " The hours were completed only during the summers" or " I participated ------ times for a total of ------ hours" ? I just don't know why they have to make it like that haha

For example for my shadowing I just added a sentence that said like "I shadowed weekly during the summer and then less regularly during the school year" and for a job I had only during summers I said "I had the position for the summers of --- and ----"... for one I just put n/a because it didn't make sense for it

The information you provide (e.g. time period, hours/week, etc) will show all of your activities in a graphical format. The purpose of this is so that the admissions committee can see all of your activities and your commitment to them in one visual. If your participation is not continuous, or if you're only involved during the summer/winter/fall semesters, just add a brief note after you've pasted in the info from AMCAS.

Does that help clarify?

Yes thank you!

Would love some input as an OOS applicant as well on how to go about the secondary! There's so much freedom I feel like I don't know how to go about it and whether I should really focus on "why wisconsin" because I'm OOS or more a diversity angle

Has anyone received a secondary for WARM? How are the essays?

How do you do the hours per week for something that was continuous over a long time period but not every week? Like shadowing I did randomly and have a set total of hours and a set range of dates that I completed it in, but didn't do it every week so I don't know how many hours per week to put. And this other volunteering I did about 3-4 hours every time I went but only did 30 hours over a school year.

I believe you just input the entire time span, but explain in the box when you actually did the activities.

yes I'm going to put the entire time span but I don't know what to put for "hours per week"

Any MSTP applicants here? Trying to get a second opinion on the secondary question, where I just can't seem to find over 250 words to write. Did you guys get ~500?

I got 432. I had a ton of labs I want to work with though, so that took up most of my words.

Nope, only 264 words. I said all I needed to in that amount about my interests, specific labs, and programs.

IS secondary submitted 8/19
IS residency was not verified instantly though
