Dean Mission said in an earlier post that they don't accept international applicants except for canadians and us citizens so maybe this was the reason why?
I am Canadian though, was born outside of Canada though 🙂

Lol I just realized that I sound incredibly salty in that OP smh. Honestly I don’t mind the R if I’m not a good fit for them and vice versa, I clearly see myself as an academic who does mostly research, and they may have wanted someone who is more committed to medicine. Just hope that there are no systemic app issues

This is what Dean Mission had posted:

VCU does not accept applicants that are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The only exception to that are Canadian citizens, who are treated as out-of-state residents. Note, however, that foreign nationals with Canadian permanent residency status do not qualify.

Yes. I have been a Canadian citizen since June 2015. I do not consider being a foreign national with a PR card = being Canadian.

MD/PhD applicant here, I have had the "Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates." status for almost 2 weeks now.

I don't know what to make of this? Not sure why they'd wait this long if they have already made a decision to reject me... Anyone else had this status for awhile? Did you end up getting an II or a R? 😕 I know I should just be patient... but its making me crazy lol

Right there with you! Fingers crossed we hear something back soon 🙂

I am fully convinced that my status of: "Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile." will never change. .

Lol I have had that since like late August/early September. There is no way that this "sub-committee" hasn't already ranked/rated my application.

+1 man. I’m taking it as a soft R at this point. I think this is the same status that all the rejected people had last cycle too .

Had this message since early July. Also going to take it that way. Just surprised given the fact that they have not been shy with regards to rejecting people

If we wanna be optimistic, we’re probably in that line of 2000+ apps the top have made it past the sub committee and are waiting for the general committee to review them based on internal ranking. If anything it looks like we’re all ranked super low on the totem pole lol

Yeah I figured we were pretty low on the pole lol. I mean I guess it's nice that we still theoretically have a chance? I'm guessing there will be a mass wave of rejections soon, especially once they stop sending out IIs considering they're already scheduling into March pretty much

Dean mission makes it sound like a bunch of II will drop down from the heavens after the magical oct 15 date since a bunch of applicants will be good samaritans and give up all their extra ones

Hopefully that’ll happen lol. I like that version

This totally happened last year... There was still II activity into the new year. I don't think II's were still as abundant, but your chances are far from nil and you've made it a long way.

Two years ago my friend got an II in February for March, got off the WL in April. The dream is alive, ppl!

OOS, Rejected pre-interview via portal (received email about portal change) :/
Good luck to everyone else applying!

Does VCU do yield protection (or limit the # of *canadian mstp applicants they consider?)

I think to an extent almost all schools will yield protect, but no one here other than Dean Mission would know the answer to such a specific question.

I replied to Dean Mission's post that we could PM him if we have been complete since July and still have this status. He was able to tell me the exact date and time that my sub-committee review was complete and that my file was in line for a full board review even though my status still has not changed.

Last year he said that VCU does not yield protect. Although, we're all too aware that acceptance offerings are still highly calculated.

I wasn’t doubting that my app wasn’t past sub committee review. He told me the same thing. I was taking it as a soft R since most of the interivew dates are taken and since I still haven’t been reviewed by the full board yet, it likely means my internal ranking is pretty low compared to most of the other applicants

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

Been like this since mid July.

Status on the portal just changed to Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates. Did not receive an email alert for the change of status.

I think the system updates at like 6pm and you'll get an email then?

I messaged him and didn't receive a response lol. Probably hasn't gotten to mine yet

I get that at each of the four dates approximately ~25% (~45 students) will be accepted. However, it was noted earlier that if you are not accepted on the first date, it does not affect your chances of being accepted later. This doesn't make sense to me because wouldn't there be a larger applicant pool that you would be compared to as time goes on ? I wonder how many people have been interviewed already...

By “your chances don’t go down” they mean even though you interviewed early, if you’re not accepted immediately they can still come back to you later. It’s a nice way of saying you weren’t passed over. You’ll still be competing against a larger pool of people though

My application status just changed to “file review is complete.” Is this a soft R? I’m confused as to what it means.

So can i expect an II or an R this week? They've made a decision right?
Hard to say. You might get either tomorrow or you might get it 3 months from now. All that really means is that the full committee has reviewed your app and gave it a committee score. If it’s high you’ll get an II. If not it’ll be a rejection or you’ll be on hold basically

So why wasn’t I given an R immediately if they aren’t going to send an II?

Sent out in batches. I’m sure their portal interface doesn’t make quick reviewing and responses on large scale feasible.

It might also be that they don't have you ranked high enough to immediately receive an II but not low enough to immediately receive an R. Depending on how the other applicants are rated through the cycle things will constantly change.

Do you know if these ratings change as you are compared to other applicants? Or will your score stay the same in the cycle?

I don't know anything specific about the pre-interview rankings, only Dean Mission would know that. For post-interview however, the way they explained it made it seem as though it is a static rank.

Could just be lag time. Could also be that your scores weren’t low enough for an R. At least last year VCU didn’t send out mass pre II rejections until feb/March
