2019-2020 CA University of Science and Medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

See you all on FB!
Hi everyone! Current M1 here. We tried to make an official Facebook group for you guys plus us so you could ask questions but it is currently pending faculty approval and looks like it won't be approved for a while. I would recommend making an "unofficial" page for yourselves if you'd like a place to get to know other accepted students and find housing. In the meantime if you have any questions about academics, student life, housing, etc., feel free to message me or any of the other M1/M2 students you've seen here. Thanks for your patience and we're all looking forward to meeting you guys in the fall!

Thank you for this!! We just started an unofficial page which anyone (M1s, M2s) is free to join if you want to connect/answer questions. If not, we'll hit you up here on SDN 🙂 Looking forward to meeting you! Log into Facebook | Facebook

Hmm that facebook group link doesn't seem to work for me, did you change the name of the group?

For those accepted, I haven't heard anything more about immunization verification since submitting the documentation from the acceptance email. From when I was accepted, they said in a couple months we would get access to a portal to upload that vaccination information but that time has past. Hopefully others are in my same boat and I didn't just miss an important email about this.

I haven’t received any information concerning vaccinations either! Hope that brings you some peace of mind 🙂

I'm on the WL. We really just sit here without sending a LOI or anything and hope they accept us off of the waitlist? 😱

It's nice not having to churn out another LOI but that seems like an unusual method to me, how will they know who on the WL is actually serious about attending the school? And iirc they just auto-placed every WL person post-interview without asking whether we wanted to be on the WL?

I'm hoping that means they plan to accept a good chunk off the WL since they aren't looking for any method to filter us!

I wonder if they auto placed us too because there was absolutely no notification for me...I hope that they accept a lot off of the WL as well.

the fact that we have heard absolutely nothing post ii is so frustrating :/ really hope we’re just auto waitlisted and they start pulling people off it soon. Idk if it’s optimistic, but I’m thinking that a lot of WL people will also withdraw if given an acceptance because there’s a good chance that they have gotten into another school which is their preferred choice by now.

According to adcom, when I called, they said if you haven't heard back it literally means you are still under consideration. So, I don't think it is assumed you are on the WL... they had also said that those who have not yet heard back are in a better position than those on WL because your silence still has the opportunity to turn into an A.. but also a WL or R

Have any current students heard any talk about when cadavers will be utilized? I understand they are planning on it for the permanent facility but would love to get a better sense of approx how soon.. closer to 5 months or 2 years? Thanks!

I remember during my interview I think the interviewer mentioned they were hoping to start doing cadaver work starting with the class in the fall, but don't hold me to that

I asked adcom and they said that they have cadavers at the new campus. They’re just not sure on how many yet.

Does anyone know if they are still sending interview invites ?

Not getting my hopes up, but I do know that they had a couple of interviews in April last year. CalMed would give me the opportunity to stay in California though.

Best of luck, stay home and stay safe!

Thanks for ur response! Best of luck to you too 🙂

So admissions said CTE deadline is April 30, but I feel like the dean's email is misleading (attached)... Are other people on waitlist at other schools and don't know what to do right now (i.e. forfeit a waitlist position at their dream school for a sure deal vs. risk not going to any med school)?

If so please DM me because for some reason I can't send messages to people right now lol. We can be neurotic buddies together <3

I honestly think the people running the admissions email and phone number don't exactly understand the AAMC language. I remember e-mailing them months ago asking for the CTE deadline at this school, and I was informed that I need to select CTE on April 30 because AAMC requires it. In another email they told me it was not mandatory to place a "Commit to Enroll". In actuality, AAMC says...

"Beginning April 30, accepted applicants will have two options to select: “Plan to Enroll” or “Commit to Enroll.” Selecting “Commit to Enroll” indicates that the applicant has made a final selection and withdrawn all other applications."

From your screenshot, it seems like Dr. Eveland understands this hence the confusion. If I recall correctly, AAMC requires a CTE deadline 21 days prior to matriculation (correct me if I'm wrong). I would suggest you follow up with Dr. Eveland directly.

When did you interview?
I am thinking about what you said Admissions said to you when you called (earlier comment in this thread) and am getting nervous. If we still haven't heard back and they are actively sending waitlists, are we ~really~ in a better position than those that are getting waitlist emails? How sure did the person you spoke to sound when they told you that?

Yeah, I sent Dr. Eveland an email on Tuesday asking him to send a clarification email to the accepted listserve, but he hasn't responded haha rip. Can anyone else send him an email too?

It seems like there are a handful of schools tat have a CTE deadline of April 30 so its completely possible:

Well looks like he just sent a mass email clarifying this lol

Curious about this as well

I am not sure, just conveying what was told to me. Figured it was some amount of positivity during this stressful time lol.
The person sounded confident, but I'm understanding all members of admissions are not on the same page. And the person who told me could have been giving me their opinion, in which case it would not hold much weight.
In regards to people still getting WL, it is not like people who interviewed in Jan are getting WL notification today... there is a pattern. One interview day then around 2 weeks later those who interviewed are either WL or A or silence... not sure about R as there have not been any reported. This pattern I noticed is also just my speculation, as I am just as nervous and anxious as you

I hope my message did not sound unappreciative of you sharing what you were told from admissions. I GREATLY APPRECIATED IT! I just really wanted your opinion again because I really liked hearing that our silence could be better than a WL hahaha I was like YES!! Give me all of the positive thoughts!! Alas, anxiety crept back into my life and I had to ask you for more info. Thank you again and sorry if there was any misunderstanding 🙂

Absolutely no misunderstanding!! <3
I'm trying to be rational and not overly hopeful about anything they tell me because 1) Admissions is not on the same page 2) I don't want to be tooo positive and then let down at the end, admissions process is emotional and I think its best to not feel to positive or negative until a definitive answer has been given.

How do you know they don't accept LOI's?

Is anyone bothered that we don't get financial aid/scholarship consideration until after we commit to enroll to this school? Cost of admission is a huge factor in my decision making...

Yea it's a little strange but it probably has something to do with the fact that this school is not yet approved for federal loans, also so applicants are unable to negotiate financial aid against other schools

Received an email reply about their accreditation visit being delayed (due to Covid-19) and how it affects financial aid loans and they responded: “The institutional eligibility for Title IV funding is tied to pre-accreditation status from the regional accreditation agency WSCUC, not to the LCME programmatic accreditation status. There will be no change in the current WSCUC pre-accreditation status, and thus there will be no influence to the Title IV funding eligibility." FA already submitted the application a few months ago so they are waiting for the school code.

So they are just interviewing more people instead of pulling people out of the WL? Also they are not giving back responses to those who have not heard back post II even at this point?

Maybe I should have been more clear. The person I talked to said it was possible that there could be more interviews offered up through the end of April, not specifically that there were additional hard dates already on the calendar.

I'm guessing that IIs are still possible if someone drops an interview slot.

Does anyone know if the new building will be ready soon? Should we be looking for apartments next to the new campus?
