2019-2020 Howard

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations! I hope I receive some good news as well; second time applying to Howard... I'm a Canadian though so the entire process is much harder 🙁

What is the difference in the application system?

Congrats !!! What time was it sent
According to MSAR, only 10 international students were accepted last year. Students were from Canada; Trinidad and Tobago and United Kingdom. Don't know how many were Canadians. Also, some of them might have completed their undergrad in the US.
Also, shadowing is not allowed in Canada, thus not required for admission to medical schools here. I traveled to the US several times to be able to shadow a few doctors.

Relatable. Try being a DACA applicant. Here they consider me int'l yet I'm from the area having lived in the US all but 1 yr of my life

Not hating because I'll likely go elsewhere at this point although it would have been amazing as URM to learn at a HBCU. But the office's assistant literally told me in person that being lumped in the int'l pool means that I'm up against peers with MCAT of >517 + there's very limited space for them to begin with...

Aw, I'm so sorry! I hope you have acceptance from other schools.
Well after reading this: "But the office's assistant literally told me in person that being lumped in the int'l pool means that I'm up against peers with MCAT of >517 + there's very limited space for them to begin with..." I should probably stop checking this forum!

Thanks, appreciate it! Needless to say, the struggle is real.

I hope I didn't discourage you from the school itself, but just sharing my experience. I attended First Friday this month and spoke with admissions committee members, which at Howard is actually pretty small.

I don't want to incriminate myself by giving out specifics but the lady who told me all this is part of the committee as well. It sucked cuz she legit pulled up my profile as she was telling me this with a sulking facial expression smh. As far as the MCAT is concerned for the non-int'l applicant pool, they ask for a 494 minimum.

I have receipts on this so feel free to PM me on this if you'd like.

For the update letter: any recommendations on what to write if I don’t have significant changes since submitting my application?

what have you done since you submitted your app? (even if you don't think it was significant)

Howard just sent me an email for financial aid app through them and some document regarding housing. So who out there wants housemates because I'm not about to go through the broke life, again. Haha

Anyone who has filled out the Health Science Application for Financial Assistance, how did you get your Howard University ID number? Am I only able to get this if I pay the $300 commitment fee?

I was waitlisted last week
What time did they send out your waitlist notification? I interviewed with you on Jan. 8 and when I called to check on the status last Tuesday, they said mine didn’t make it to adcom yet.

About what time did you call? I called and left a message to with nothing.

I actually called Tuesday 1/21 around 12:30 EST because I saw the acceptances rolling in on this thread. I know Ms. Williams-Fowlkes said to call if you haven’t heard anything. I’m just wondering if two calls is too much? I don’t want to set myself back by annoying them.

I don't think calling again will be too much however, I do think you should be patient. The same thing happened to me where it seemed like everyone who interviewed on my date heard back and I didn't. When I called she said my file wasn't able to be reviewed in that committee meeting because they ran out of time. The same might be the case for you too

That is what I’m hoping! I’m just anxious because I want to join the Howard family so badly, the entire college of medicine is lit! Such a fun atmosphere with historical significance.

Got through on the phone today -- my update was never received! Glad that I called.

Just continued working in the hospital and some additional shadowing

I would just say that. Talk about specific experiences you've had within the shadowing/working and discuss what you've learned, how that experience has affected you or changed her purview or something. how it continues to confirm your commitment to medicine and how that experience affirms your decision to want to go to Howard for med school. somehow connect it to their mission statement.

Are update letters sent to [email protected] ? I sent an update letter back in October and never received a confirmation.
Give them a call. I explained what happened to me a few weeks ago. Just gonna copy paste here: I recommend you contacting them. When I sent mine, I didn't hear back from them for a month. I called the office and a few minutes later I received the confirmation. The subject of the email was Re: [SPAM]:..... So I think some of our emails end up in their spam folder, which they forget to check/don't check often.

I just gave their office a call to double-check that they received my update and they are super responsive and helpful. That means a lot, especially considering how rough this cycle has been.

Without prompt, the individual I talked to also indicated that they will be sending out interviews until April so there's still hope left for us who are waiting! Rejections will not be sent out until June.

Congrats to those who are A or got an II. Hang in there everyone else...

I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for sharing 🙂

So I'm driving home from work and I see an email from Howard. . . . .probably reminding me that I need to complete the Health Sciences Financial Aid Application since I received in early in the week but work has been crazy. I open the email and Howard sends me a scholarship notification that is renewable yearly. WOW. Howard is really making my neck hurt like this. Has anyone else received a scholarship award letter prior to the HSFA form?

That's great! Congratulations.

Thank you! Howard really throwing money out there like Oprah haha.
It's a very nice incentive for applicants, especially if someone has multiple offers.
