2019-2020 TCU & UNTHSC

Just got asked where I stand with a missing prerequisite... do we think this could be a good sign that my application is in a further review? hoping for some advice here... also my university is cancelling an offered course and now I am worried I will not be able to meet that prerequisite! sos

I was asked this about a week ago too. Once I specified how I met the requirement, they just said they would move my application forward in their process.

At least it means that they have looked at the application

Congratulations do you mind sharing when you applied and what range are your scores (dont have to be exact if you dont want to)
So maybe I am wrong here, but I wouldn't try to read in too much to the accepted stats for this particular school... If you have interviewed, you might've noticed that they seem to invite a wide range of stats... At least at my interview date (9/23). From the acceptances shared on here, and through some light detective work, it seems like they are accepting a wide variety of stats as well. There are people on hold I would've expected to be accepted the first round, and there are people accepted that possibly didn't expect that! If you haven't gotten an interview yet, feel confident knowing that they seem to be more than stats focused! If you are on hold waiting for an acceptance... I have no idea what to tell you haha I'm on hold 5x so far and I wish I had all the answers! I could be totally wrong because I am just some no0b on SDN, but that's just my observation.. or maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better lol.

to those that have been accepted still with prereqs to complete: did any of you get accepted without receiving the "missing prereq update" email? I'm wondering if they send these to everyone they want to accept who doesn't have all the prereqs completed.

Exactly! This schools seems to be less on stats and more on “do you fit with our specific program.” So I don’t want to share any stats because I don’t think it’ll help! I truly did not believe I would be accepted, I really doubted myself. So a message to everyone for the application process in general: DON’T doubt yourself. You’re amazing... you’re all amazing! Trust the application process. That was the best advice someone has ever given me!

Haven't been accepted but have been on hold 5x. Did not receive the email. Have not completed all the pre-reqs. They haven't rejected me, so I think I'm still under the "want to accept"..eventually... category. I doubt they are targeting their emails to people they want to accept. It's the applicant's responsibility to get their pre-reqs done by matriculation as stated on their website. Seems highly unlikely they would keep a running tab of their top choices for acceptances, which classes they have completed, and then draft an email to them. Additionally, many people who have not even received interviews reported receiving that email earlier in the thread.

have you heard anything since then?

In the same boat, I let them know how I'd fulfill the pre-req and they said my app is under consideration. Hoping to hear some news soon!
I am a little concerned because my university has changed their course offerings and now I cannot meet one of the requirements and I am not sure what to do because I do not want to turn over my schedule if there is no chance I move forward, but if I know I could, I would do anything

can you take the one course online??
If TCU is your dream school, don’t risk it! I was completely dumbfounded when I got an II. You never know what might be headed your way!

Hello @SOM Admissions --
I was asked for an additional letter upon submission of my supplemental application and have since added that letter through AMCAS. However, I haven't received any further contact regarding my application. Do I need to contact admissions to notify that my application is ready for further review?
Thank you!
@SOM Admissions

CURRENT STUDENTS: What are the pros and cons about TCU UNTHSC so far? Monetarily, what is it like going to a for-profit school or not having access to federal loans? (This is more for my mom than me, my heart is set on this school!)
I think you’re mistaken this school with Northstate in CA. You can get federal loans here and I believe this is a not a for-profit school.

Just to piggy-back off this, you can file federal loans through FAFSA with TCU Med. I also believe they are not-for-profit. TCU is a not-for-profit undergrad and UNTHSC is also not-for-profit.

I heard that students need to purchase an "up to date" laptop. Does anyone have more information on this?

Where are you getting your information from?
This was mentioned on interview day and if you look at the "Estimated Cost of Attendance" given by financial aid and provided on the website, there is an estimated amount for a laptop. That is where my information is from.

Y’all over here giving me anxiety talking about tuition and laptops when I’m like hey just accept me pls. :nailbiting:

The website also says "Room and Board" in the estimated cost of attendance, but would you really get an up to date room if you already have parents living in Fort Worth?

EDIT: Also, where did you get the "Up to date" phrase from?

The website contains a section called "Student Policies and Guidelines." There you will find "laptop requirement" along with a link that, unfortunately, won't open on my computer. I remember hearing something about an "up to date" computer on either interview day or the student mixer the night prior. A lot of information was given that day and I do not remember the details, which is why I am asking on here. 🙂 This could mean a computer with enough space for application and hardware requirements by the school, etc. But again, I don't know! I am only inquiring because I have a fairly old laptop. If you don't, then I wouldn't worry about it 🙂

Since no one seems to know the specifics either I will call and ask on Monday.

I have also heard and read about this laptop rule. They have made some changes on their website because it used to be clearly written out. Basically the laptop can not be over a year old from the date you matriculate or something. I think this is an unnecessary rule as I have a laptop that is several years old that can run the latest programs with no issues.

Am not buying these "cannot be over a year old laptop" or "up to date laptop" rule. The ability of a laptop is not based if it was one year old or up to date, but you gotta list the specs of any technology. A Mac Book Pro that was bought in 2014 (before most applicants here even started college) with specs of 2.8GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache, Native resolution of 2560 by 1600 pixels (Retina), 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory, 512GB PCIe-based flash storage, Intel Iris Graphics, and Support for 4096-by-2160 resolution at 24Hz surpasses most laptops out in the market today. In fact, some computer programmers still use this set-up.

Been quiet here regarding interview invites. Any recent ones? I saw/heard the Dean of Admissions left, maybe that is causing some delays?

Dr. Flynn left?
Dr. Flynn is the Dean of the Medical School, not of Admissions. I haven't heard about anyone leaving; however, I believe Dr.Nelson is the dean of admissions. She was interim though-maybe they found someone for the position permanently?

Wasn’t Dr. Cunningham the Dean of Admissions and the one posting on this forum? Her name is no longer on the medical school’s website.

Dr. Cunningham's title I believe is/was Associate Dean of Admissions. Dr. Nelson's title is Interim Assistant Dean of Admissions and Outreach...? Perhaps Dr. Cunningham did leave? Where did you hear this?

My daughter interviewed on 12/2. She said there were 20 people interviewed on that day. Supposedly they were told to expect an answer on Friday 12/13

The TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine is not considered a for-profit medical school. TCU is the degree granting institution, therefore we are a private institution. All our students qualify for federal financial aid.

Our students are required to have a laptop throughout our program. If you have been offered admission to our program, laptop specifications will be shared with you during the pre-matriculation process.

No delays. We are working diligently to ensure that all applications are reviewed thoroughly.
If I was one of the first to submit at the end of August and I haven't heard back yet, can I assume I've been reviewed at least once and passed over? I realize applications aren't always viewed chronologically, but I'm a bit concerned that I've already been silently rejected.

I told you there's such thing as "specifications." Saying "up to date" or "purchased within last year" does not mean anything. Specifications is key.

Exactly. Which is why I asked what that specification was since I knew there was one. But I guess we will have to wait and see what exactly that specification is.

But isnt it fishy that they aren't specifying what those are? Every other school is. I still stand by my statement. You are right in that specifications is more important logically. They could have specifications and also still have the purchased within the last year requirement. From what I remember, that is the case.

Dude, did you forget already what you posted? You never asked for specification, and you literally said: "I heard that students need to purchase an "up to date" laptop." I had to remind you all about specifications.
Yeah I asked a QUESTION if anyone had any INFORMATION regarding that. Because clearly I wasn’t the only one who has heard about specifications. This is what a place like SDN or reddit is for — to obtain information from peers. Don’t get angry at others for asking questions, instead we can help each other find the correct information 🙂

And that's why I had to tell you about Specifications because it was my way of helping you. You asked a question, a response was given. And yet, you continued to shut it down. Oh well. ‍‍

As a quick aside, it’s eerie how similar your username is to my ACTUAL name. Perhaps we’re from different parts of the multiverse or something

I think we have entered the spider-verse!!! ️️

No idea was shut down, as you did not know the correct answer either. In fact we still don’t! As I said, I guess we must wait. That’s all! Again, no need to get so angry.
