Question about the attending the community college question on the secondary? Is this only if a majority of your course work was from there?

Also, what is the function of this question? Attending community college does not necessarily equate to low-income, as attending a private university does not always equate high income. Some low-income students who are admitted to private colleges are able to attend due to need based financial aid and grants, and at times this is a cheaper option than state or community college.

We consider attending a community college an element of our diversity domains - could represent limited educational resources, SES and represents a perspective of increasing access to those who do not attend a university.

Hi Dr. Cunningham,

I have not yet completed the secondary because I was out of the country when I received it. I am planning to submit by the end of the week. Is it still worth submitting at this point or would it be detrimental to my chances?

Thanks. Though, that post came across if the school would consider the applicant because his fiance is local to DFW.
Sounds like a tie to the DFW area to me! But obviously only the school can tell you. Best to ask them!

How helpful is it if an applicant has ties to the Dallas-Forth Worth area?

It doesn't hurt, but I don't know if it necessarily gives an edge based off their last class stats. They take a lot of OOS as well.

Based on last year's thread and what has been mentioned previously, it seems the only time geography is considered is when there is a last minute cancellation for an interview and a spot needs to be filled by a competitive applicant that lives in the area. The school has stated that residency and ties to the area are not part of consideration criteria.

Question about TCU's MMI format:

• How many interview stations are there? I read online that most MMI can have anywhere from six to ten, and each lasting about ten minutes.
• Also, MMI questions are read outside the room before entering. For TCU, Once you enter, do they never really ask you the questions?

If an applicant doesn't meet the 3.0 threshold, are there any other compensating factors that could lead to their application being reviewed? Or is it rejected outright?

I read through the entire 2018-2019 thread before interviewing to see if my questions were answered there. These are a few responses I found helpful when preparing for my interview!

  • Post # 833 on last year's thread. Pg. 17.
“Are all of the stations scenarios based?

MMI stations may be presented as a traditional question (tell me about you), a situation or scenario and/or a role-play (with a Standardized Patient).

How long do we have to respond?

2-minute preparation and 7-minute conversation.

Do the prompt arbitrators answer questions/interact with you?

ANY MMI by design should be a conversation, even those that involve a role-play. MMIs are not a one-way interaction from either you or the interviewer (or Rater). Our Raters are trained to be conversational, welcoming and engaging.”

  • "Bias is reduced by a larger sample size - we have 10 cases." post #829

  • Post #835 someone asked if they could take notes during MMI to use and this was TCU's response:
"No, you'll actually leave behind your personal items in our locked room before starting the MMI."

I had to wait a month to submit my secondary because I was recovering from jaw surgery and had speech limitations. I emailed them last month asking about options out of concern of delaying my application, and this is what they said:

"Our supplemental application deadline is December 15th at 11:59pm CST, therefore you will have plenty of time after your recovery to submit your supplemental application. For peace of mind, we can tell you that we will continue to interview from September through March. We wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to receiving your application in the near future."

Hopefully this shows you that they are very understanding and that they don't view submitting it this late as anything too extreme! Obviously we would all love to be as early as possible and sometimes us pre-meds can get a little caught up with wanting everything to go super smoothly, but sometimes life happens and that's okay 🙂 Best of luck!
I remember your post! I hope you are feeling better now!

Thank you so much for your response! I went ahead and submitted on Tuesday so this makes me a feel a lot better. Good luck to you too and hope you are recovering smoothly 🙂

Was there a place to store your bag and stuff?
If you’re asking about luggage, I did not see anyone with that. Not sure the answer. There were plenty of people with purses/folders/other personal items and those were stored in a locked room during MMI.

I have 2 more questions:
1) For the MMI, when does the timer to give your response start? Does it start once you enter the room OR would the interviewer let you know when it starts?
2) Are you expected to remember the prompt once you enter the room? I read that you're not allowed to write anything during MMI.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to answer these. Just know that they make the timer very clear and fair. Don’t worry about the prompts. It’ll be ok. I was worried about your second question before my interview as well, but I didn’t need to be. Remember that they want you to be successful and not overly stressed at this interview, so they can best determine who you are as an applicant! They take great care to create a welcoming environment.

Thanks! I guess, i'm really just stressing out about this more than I should. =)

What's the ratio of interviewees to matriculants for TCU/UNTHSC like?

I don’t think anyone knows the actual answer to this, however there are 12 interview dates, and at my interview there were 24 applicants. It looked like the max accommodation based on room sizes were closer to 40. But I’m guessing they’re going for 30 max size (or the 24 as in my group). The next group and previous group (@NernstEqn911) of interviewees might be able to add insight to this data.

This would imply they’re intending to interview between 300-350 for 60 seats. I would also guess 2 or 1.75 offers per seat given a new school and relatively high tuition for Texas and then some for waitlist. Roughly a 30% chance of acceptance outright I would guess, not including waitlist potential.

No data has been released on acceptances vs. matriculates though, there’s only been the one cycle before us.

Edited for number clarity

There were 24 in my group as well. It’s hard to say how admissions will play out this year since their app cycle started so late last year. That in combination with free tuition last year and other variables makes it difficult to predict... also no one knows the secret ways of adcoms lol. All I know is that tomorrow the first interview group gets admission decisions and I am shook hahah
