2019-2020 TCU & UNTHSC

Just curious, has anyone heard anything yet?
There should be a rule where no one is allowed to post on this thread between the hours of 5pm and 7pm central time every other Friday unless they have admission news. Haha I’m going to have a heart attack one of these days. Nothing yet. Last time, emails went out around 6:30 or something like that.

Hopefully I get to interview here. Love that they quick about their decisions post interview. Most schools would make you wait for months.

Lmao. Wait til you’re refreshing your phone every 2 minutes every other Friday for weeks on end, and you just spend the days in between just thinking about what notification you’re gonna get that Friday. Either way it sucks I guess. I think every school should really just stick to the 4-6 week rule imo

Believe me. I have been doing that for other schools I am waiting to hear back from. At least here we know it’s every other Friday. Some schools you dont even know when you’re gonna hear back lol. Well keep your heads up. I know it’s disappointing to get the R but there is a better place waiting for you.

I’m guessing for the confidentiality of the MMI interviewers and any feedback they give.

Yeah I get that but still, I can think of at least three med schools with MMI that still give feedback without comprising the confidentiality of the MMI reviewers. I just want to know where I messed up and can improve for the future. It just keeps applicants from being successful in the future and keep on having to spend an insane amount of money on reapplying every year

I completely understand. I hate that I wasted my last bit of money on flying down there on such short notice.

I guess I’m different. I know my mcat is horrid and with 4 interviews and 2 R’s I can only assume I need some help interviewing. Maybe an advisor or something can look over your app and see if they feel that’s the problem?

Yeah I get the feeling. I feel dumb for wasting my time interviewing honestly and not getting any feedback in the end blows. My stats are low but not out for the realm of being accepted I think, I interview practiced and prepped plenty, and my advisors went over my app with a fine tooth comb. Ugh I just need to work on being an overall better applicant I guess, but it seems like the process is such a crapshoot and I just doubt myself so much as an applicant now. I wish there was something specific I could improve on but I know there are many really great applicants for TCU and we can’t all get accepted!

What is your mcat score if you dont mind me asking? You still have 2 more schools to hear from so stay positive. Also, there’s still time to grab more IIs so use the interviews that you already had as learning experiences moving forward. Good luck.

Rooting for you, Katniss
thank you

Abhorrent, seriously. It’s not a humble brag. It was a stretch for me to even get an interview at any school let alone an MD school.

Lol yeah I’m not sure that it feels better to be told to improve everything. I understand the doubt. You have plenty of time, though. Your advisors would’ve been honest if they felt you couldn’t get in, so keep hoping, even if it’s hard!

I got accepted today! To other applicants looking to hear back in the future: The call was from a "Private Number"(I thought the call was originally gonna be from a Forth Worth area code (817), which I memorized by heart!). The calls were between 5PM-6PM Forth Worth time. (They called twice because I missed the call the first time.) I'm from out of state.

Hey guys I’m an MS1 here at TCU & UNTHSC SOM and an Admissions Ambassador. I’ve been watching you guys squirm the last few days and I wanna reassure those who received a hold notice that you very much are still in consideration. I’m also here to answer any questions you guys have about the curriculum and the school. I will not answer questions pertaining to the MMI. Please be respectful of my time and do not ask me questions already answered by the administration.

Hi! I'm from out of state, and I'd like to know what would you recommend as far as moving to Forth Worth and getting settled in. Is Summer before Fall 2020 enough time? And what do you feel one should brush up on before starting MS1? Thank you so much for doing this!

Ask them for an academic year calendar, to help with your timeline.
Last year orientation started in July.

I understand being a medical student is a full-time job. Do you think there's time to do part-time work (like maybe becoming a teaching assistant or research assistant, or maybe off-campus part-time worker) to supplement cost of attendance?

What’s the acceptance rate for this year or last year? Does anybody know?

I think it would be really tough to work as a medical student. If you are aiming for competitive residencies, then you will have research on top of that. Maybe a tutor gig might be doable.

Most recently reported II was complete 9/5. Any other recent IIs complete since then? I was complete mid-September and hoping to hear something soon.

Hi all,

Some personal life stuff happened and I never got around to finishing the secondary. Is it too late to send it in?

Hey I am sorry you didn't get the news you wanted. I know it sucks not being able to get feedback from the school, but the fact you were given an interview at the schools means the school thinks you are probably more than capable of being a medical student. I'm gonna give you and anyone else who gets an R this tidbit I was told when applying. There are more students applying to medical school who are capable of becoming exceptional doctors than there are seat available to teach them. One of the reasons that TCU and UNTHSC SOM may not be giving feedback is because that sets a false precedent that you are not good enough for medical school. This is not a school that takes any one factor into account when deciding an admission decision. Therefore it would be unfair to tell you that you need a higher MCAT score when they probably have accepted someone with a lower score. And that can be said potentially for every part of your application. But there are some schools that are more research driven that would like to see more research experience. There are some schools creating physician leaders that want to see more community engagement in an application. This is the sucky thing about asking for advise on your application from different schools, they will either tell you the same generic info like raise xyz stats or info specific to their school that may not resonate with other admissions committee. I think this medical schools genuinely takes a very holistic admissions approach. There is no benchmark number in any category that I am aware of. Since there are only 60 seats, they have to make a tough decision about who stands out among the crowd and aligns with the school values. Be the best possible applicant you can be. Improve in the places you know you can make a significant difference. Take on any responsibilities that come your way and make sure to showcase them.

**Disclaimer these are my personal views of the school and not in any way reflective what admissions might actually be thinking**

The curriculum allows for more personal time but in no way do I think any medical school curriculum should be juggled with a job. There may be opportunities to work on the UNTHSC or TCU campus in the library where you could potentially study and work (not sure, also very limited). But personally I think that the free time you do have should be best utilized in connecting with your peers, exploring the community, and meeting personal needs. Med school is definitely more rigorous than anything thrown at you in undergrad. Scheduling varies by block. But we do have a few full time moms who juggle a home life and school (Kuddos to these amazing people). So I wouldn't say it is impossible, but I wouldn't in any way endorse the idea.

Academic Calendar for 2019

School starts in early July so you need to start looking for places in early. I recommend visiting a bunch of apartment complexes before committing to any place. Second Look week is probably going to be prime time to explore fort worth. Half the current class lives in the West 7th area near the bar scene. There are various luxury apartments in the area with a full gym, pool, and clubhouse. Our class also has a document with apartments in the area with details about the living conditions and amenities. I think once a Facebook group of prospective students is formed, one of us will share it to all the incoming students. As far as things to brush up on, nothing. Enjoy the little time you have between the start of medical school and now.

I am so excited to have received an acceptance from this school Friday 11/1. I interviewed 9/23 and received the hold email on two different occasions before getting the acceptance call. I feel so fortunate that I am going to be a student at the TCU-UNTHSC school of medicine - class 2024. Congratulations to all other accepted students and if you are on hold, have faith in the holistic review this school adheres to!!

Since there are only 60 seats, they have to make a tough decision about who stands out among the crowd and aligns with the school values.

How does acceptance and matriculation works? I thought almost all medical schools offer twice the number of acceptances because only half of them ends up matriculating?
