How does acceptance and matriculation works? I thought almost all medical schools offer twice the number of acceptances because only half of them ends up matriculating?

So just another disclaimer, I am not working for admissions and I cannot attest to their exact process. From my understanding of when I went through the application process, no medical school offers more acceptances than seats available because then you couldn’t guarantee an exact class size. From what I was told by my advisor is that medical school offer acceptances when they have available seats. Example School X offers 100 acceptances for a 100 seats. 50 of those students decline because they get better offers. School X issues more acceptances as each students declines. Schools X now offers 50 more acceptances totaling 150. Of those 50, another 20 decline. The process continues and now a total of 170 acceptances have been given out. This continues on until the waitlist. That’s why on some of the treads you might see waives of acceptances. Other times you might see a school “front load” in which the early interviewers fill up all the spots in a medical school and the later interviewers have low acceptances or all waitlisted.

However from what I know of the TCU process, acceptances are given on a rolling basis. There are open seats for admissions up until the last interview date. This school does not front load offers. Hold candidates are reassessed with the following interview week candidates.

One way to look at the ratio of acceptances to seats is how much the students liked the school and treated it as their top choice. Many of the students here had multiple offers at more established MD schools and still chose to attend here. From what I remember hearing is we had way less acceptances than double the seats. Majority of students given an offer here accepted it.

Maybe @SOM Admissions can chime in here for more info.

I received an II today but will be turning it down. Good luck everyone!
Thank you for letting us know and please make sure you notify our office via email. Being professional during the application season is not limited to interactions with our office. It includes following the application protocols in place, so that we may offer a vacant interview spot to another candidate.

Each school varies in they way they manage the admission offer process. Our Admissions Committee looks at historical data to make adjustments in the number of offers they make each year. While our committee would like to predict exactly how many declined offers we will receive in any given year, at times they have to adjust accordingly and make additional admission offers. Our goal is to matriculate 60 students by the start of our academic year in July of 2020.

Hi all,

Some personal life stuff happened and I never got around to finishing the secondary. Is it too late to send it in?
Our supplemental application deadline is December 15, 2019 at 11:59 CST. You still have time, but we highly encourage you not to wait until the last minute to submit.

Hello @SOM Admissions,
If we were complete late September and still haven't heard back, do we still have a chance of getting an II? I really like this school and am hoping for a chance here. How long is your interview season and when do you think you will stop extending II? Thank you for taking the time out to address our concerns. I really appreciate the transparency.

Did anyone else get an email about a missing prerequisite class?

Academic Calendar for 2019

School starts in early July so you need to start looking for places in early. I recommend visiting a bunch of apartment complexes before committing to any place. Second Look week is probably going to be prime time to explore fort worth. Half the current class lives in the West 7th area near the bar scene. There are various luxury apartments in the area with a full gym, pool, and clubhouse. Our class also has a document with apartments in the area with details about the living conditions and amenities. I think once a Facebook group of prospective students is formed, one of us will share it to all the incoming students. As far as things to brush up on, nothing. Enjoy the little time you have between the start of medical school and now.

Hi! Thank you for the calendar. I noticed that it goes from July through June of the following year. Is there no such thing as summer break?

You’re an adult now, summer vacations are for kids!

If you look at the month of August of year 2, there is an optional summer break. The school is planning to have some cool elective options for that period that students can choose participate in. The elective credits completed then can count toward your total elective credits needed for graduate. So you can potentially have more free time in year 4 or do more electives. The school has yet to officially publish the elective options for this upcoming summer.

Our application season runs from July - March. We practice rolling admissions, meaning that you can hear from our Admissions Committee anytime during the season. We still have several interview dates in December and several more in 2020. Our secondary application deadline is December 15th, so our committee will be reviewing applications well beyond 2019.

Interesting, I was first day as well. Has anyone else you know from first day been accepted after the first decision day?
Someone on here got accepted last time (not yesterday) from the first interview group.

Hello @SOM Admissions --
I was asked for an additional letter upon submission of my supplemental application and have since added that letter through AMCAS. However, I haven't received any further contact regarding my application. Do I need to contact admissions to notify that my application is ready for further review?
Thank you!

Does anyone know of any reapplicants that have gotten an II?
Yes, there have been some. If you are a reapplicant to this specific school, note that the admissions dean has stated several times that there should have been some improvements or additions to your last year's application for a chance of an interview this time.

FInally scrambled 2 more LORs and submitted them today. It will pretty much be a miracle at this point but at least I tried. Does anyone know how long the school will be interviewing?

I am so excited to have received an acceptance from this school Friday 11/1. I interviewed 9/23 and received the hold email on two different occasions before getting the acceptance call. I feel so fortunate that I am going to be a student at the TCU-UNTHSC school of medicine - class 2024. Congratulations to all other accepted students and if you are on hold, have faith in the holistic review this school adheres to!!
THIS! I am almost in the same position, was a little disheartened to get the first hold but was incredibly excited and surprised to get the call for an A two weeks later. Don’t let the holds get you down, they really are reviewing every week which is great. It’s more communication than applicants normally get throughout this process which I appreciate.

Have faith! When I got the acceptance call it felt like I had won the lottery! This process is daunting but don't stop believing!
