OOS Secondary received just now.

How does UCI screen? Debating whether to complete it because my MCAT is decent but nowhere near their average.

IS just received my 2º now.

They ask: Have you participated in service to an underserved community/population for at least a year?

Do you think working with underserved populations in other countries would be acceptable?

Yes!

Secondary received, low stat applicant. According to MSAR, I'm not even in the 10th percentiles... Do they pre-screen?

Is this for PRIME? I also have this issue/complication.

In state with a cGPA 3.88, sGPA 3.94, 514 MCAT. No secondary yet, Verified 5/31. Should I be worried yet about getting screened out?

Edit- got one 7/21 at 3 am. Such a random time hahah

Obviously not with those stats. Some of the UCs seem to be using weird screening methods this year so don't worry.

For the activities section, did you all try to list at least one activity under each category (even though it may not have been a "most meaningful" on your primary)?

Does anyone know how difficult it is to be accepted as an OOS at Irvine?
Based on MSAR, 88% matriculated were in-state. Most of their applicants were in-state (71%) but only 0.69% OOS matriculated.
These are matriculation so probably slightly higher percentages were accepted.

Got my secondary at 2 am Sunday morning, it's probably automated otherwise the admissions office is grinding

Quick question regarding the secondary:

For the activities section, should we put down pretty much all our activities from AMCAS? Or actually just the most ‘’meaningful” ones? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Hey y'all, sorry if these are dumb questions.
1) Does anyone know if for the underserved communities section we can put volunteering in the hospital or teaching assistant? A lot of the patients/students I helped came from disadvantaged backgrounds but the focus of these EC's weren't necessarily serving underserved?
2) Can we include activities where we will have committed a year by the time of matriculation, or does it only include up to the current time period?
3) Can we put multiple activities together that add up to a year, or is it only for one specific activity we've done for a year?
4) Does UCI focus more on service or research? I've seen both from previous threads so was curious!

Thanks in advance for any help 🙂

sorry if this is a dumb question but does volunteering with autistic kids count as work with an underserved population? or does underserved specifically refer to racial/economic groups

I would say so! Maybe make a statement as to why you feel they're underserved - just to strengthen your point a bit

FWIW I work with kids with intellectual disabilities (some autistic, some not) and I put all those activities and then said "disabled" as the population. This may not be true for high-functioning autism though.

I didn't classify my work with children with autism as underserved, but if you can justify it, I think you can!

For Bio prereqs it says must include 1 upper division course-- will genetics course count for this (course is considered BIO322 and BIO322L)?

I think so, but if you want to be 100% sure it is best to ask.

for the gap year essay how in depth did yall go into the description? also when they say why you chose this experience vs the others do they mean like why did you choose A over B or why were you interested in general

I just said why I was interested in participating in that activity. I don’t think they’re asking you to compare or choose between anything.

Had the same question as well. Anyone figure this out? I was going to only put the 3 most meaningful ones that I put on my AMCAS, but looking at all of the options they give you, it seems like they want everything?

Is the "activities" section basically asking for our AAMC MME's? Or should we list as many activities asp ossible?

II received! at 2:34 am? (I'm out of country right now so times might be off on my email stamp). LizzyM 79.80, IS (socal), only gave me two dates in August and September. complete 7/20
holy crap I submitted the day after you and now I'm watching my email like a hawk lmao but CONGRATS!!! That was a super quick turnaround, 5 days?!

Does anyone know if they're still sending out secondaries? Still haven't gotten one from UCI 😢

For the personal accomplishment prompt, would it be out of place to talk about an experience with a patient that I helped?

Depends on how you talk about it. if you truly did help then sure but if you assisted a physician then I do not believe you can say you 'helped' them by yourself.

If you get an email from UC Irvine with a title: "AMCAS Application Received" (wherein they just acknowledge the receipt of your applicatoin), you're pretty much out of contention for receiving any immediate secondaries, right?

I got that e-mail on July 17th and still haven't gotten a secondary. I'm chalking it up as a pre-secondary reject. I'm OOS with average MD matriculant stats anyways, so makes sense.

It's not an R until you get an R. Crazier things have happened, don't lose hope!

For the underserved question, do you only list things that were over a year long? Or if multiple things add up to more than a year, should you add all of them.

My app didn’t let me add short amounts of time. If it wasn’t longer than a year from the start date to the end date it wouldn’t let me move on.

Is work with at-risk/immigrant/economically disadvantages youth mentorship considered service to underserved or does it have to be medically underserved?

Isn't there a "homeless" box you can check when you select disadvantaged? So I'm guessing economically disadvantaged might be considered underserved?

Looking for the answer to this too. 🙁 anyone know? Or can anyone share what they're doing for this?

This question plus the service to the disadvantaged question...idk, It’s a confusing secondary to be sure... Since they gave the option, i ended up listing all my activities. Not sure whether that will help or hurt me tho.
