2019-2020 UC San Francisco

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks like they're biting close to the August apps now. Last week they were around 7/14-7/18, so I guess they are reviewing the earlier apps first. At this rate, they'll reach the Labor Day apps in early November, which confirms what others have told me about Labor Day apps potentially being queued for review until November.
Not so sure if they are going in order though, I submitted secondary early August and received II early/mid September

4th year checking in, any questions I can help you guys with?

Post-interview, my main concern (if fortunate enough to be accepted) is how the clinical sites are spread out across the city, plus how the student housing is separated from the Parnassus campus. I know there's a pretty robust shuttle system, but that still seems kinda inconvenient. Could you comment on that part of your experience? Is this a silly thing to be worried about?

R'd just now. A longshot for sure...good luck to all the other applicants!

Did anyone complete 8/2x or after get a secondary yet?
Also curious about this. I submitted 7/23 and haven't received a secondary yet. Called the admissions office today and they told me to call back for an update next week.....maybe they were letting me down easy hahaha.

508 MCAT is a bit below the 10th percentile (511) for UCSF. It's a reach but who knows!

Yep, completely aware about the MCAT averages here lol. But with their holistic screening situation, I'm definitely relying on a few other factors to carry me for this school. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

I'd be lying if I said having to shuttle around was the best thing ever, but training at the different sites is absolutely worth it for me. I can't emphasize enough how strong the clinical training here (there's a reason our residencies are so sought after). That said, if the idea of focusing on one site appeals more to you, that's perfectly reasonable to consider when making your decision 🙂

Most people don't do student housing. Many live very close to Parnassus (less than a 10min walk). Yes finding housing is stressful, but it will always work out. Housing is the #1 concern applicants have about us but it really isn't the nightmare it's painted to be. Hope this helps, keep the questions coming

hi 🙂 would you recommend talking about 'why UCSF' in the secondary?
Nah. If they really wanted to hear it they would ask. Unless you have some compelling/interesting circumstance to share (kids who go to school in the area, spouse who just started a bajillion year PHD program in the bay), just leave it blank and save that stuff for interviews.

I got a secondary and my stats are cgpa: 3.50, sgpa: 3.32, MCAT: 514 so there's hope for us low stats ppl 🙂

Well, finally it came. I got the secondary just now. Submitted primary on 8/29. My MCAT came in on Sep 17. Called them and they told me to wait at least 6 weeks from Sep 17. Surprised I got it just now.

It isn't...Unless you're on SDN...

This application cycle reminds me of when I was applying to undergraduate schools and browsing College Confidential, the SDN of high school. I thought my SAT was low with a 2180. Turns out that it was just the inflated sample of students in C.C.

low compared to UCSF's average MCAT score which is 515 and also when I said low I was taking into account my gpa which is veryyy low even by normal non-ucsf standards
514 is one point less than 515, which means that you are in the right range MCAT wise.

UCSF avg is 515...!? 🤔 🤔 🤔

515 avg seems quite low for a T10...
I think it's probably closer to 516, which is like 93rd percentile. UCSF is pretty holistic, apparently, though. I know, it's super shocking to see a school that's not like 520 in the T10 lol

I think UCSF's numbers were a bit lower than other T10s (i don't have msar anymore tho so I'm just speaking from memory and may be wrong). I've heard UCSF is one of those schools that's looking for a "mysterious x factor" so the numbers of their accepted applicants are slightly more varied than other T10s because they're a little more holistic I guess? All conjecture though

Is it as holistic as the other UC schools? UCLA is the other quirky one.

But it's skewed to the left, towards the lower stat applicants.
Yea ): that's why I'm sad because I had only seen the average and not the median originally so I had slightly more hope. But that small hope has now been dashed now that I realize the average was skewed towards lower stat applicants lol

Oh really? I assumed UCLA was more numbers based when they put out those new minimums for gpa and mcat (though I heard they might not have actually applied the minimums because of the backlash they received)
