While those numbers obviously aren't quite as good as 90%, keep your head up! By getting an OOR invite to UW, you've already jumped through one of the narrowest hoops in the entire application process of any school (only about 100 of >7500 OOR applicants interviewed!!!). So clearly they saw something extraordinary in your application and thought you'd be a great fit 🙂

I'm IS. This was my second go at UW. I made all the changes that they suggested, and still not even an interview. I don't know whether to be angry or sad or glad. Their reputation for quality of life for their students and residents is so bad, yet their Match tempting, it would be hard to say 'no' if I got an offer.

I'm actually a lot less upset than I thought it would be. At least we knew early so we didn't have to hang our hope for months on end.

There was always a part of me that wanted to leave Seattle for a while before coming back. I guess this is a sign I get to finally do that! Plus, we can always apply for residency! Almost all of the residents I currently work with at the Seattle VA are UW residents and come from around the country, so I'm just treating this as an opportunity to gain perspective and experience in a different part of the country. Sending positive vibes your way 🙂

Don’t give up. Took three tries but I finally got the invite. To be completely honest, I didn’t get any feedback last cycle and went on the what my gut told me to improve on. Basically since I had a ton of volunteer work and research, I threw on scribing full time and it made the difference. This is actually my 6th interview... and an early acceptance at a different school... so.... considering I got none for the past two years, that’s an amazing turn around. All I gotta say is don’t give up but try something new if you don’t get in this cycle.

To be honest, I also wanted to get away. Took me awhile to realize there is no right place to learn medicine. It is what it is. I’ve seen you around so like I’m sure you’ll get in somewhere good regardless. Good luck on your other schools!

Thank you! I'm so, so fortunate to have received as many IIs as I have already, and I get positively giddy when I think about two schools in particular. In-state tuition and being close to family would have been sweet, but there's a lot of factors that pull me towards those schools. Hopefully, they turn into acceptances! UW will be one of my top residency choices regardless. 🙂 I really thought I would be a lot more bitter than I am 😆

Good luck to you as well, and I hope you get that sweet A from UW! Represent my alma mater well. All of you. 🙂

Yea, the scribe thing is a really great idea. I just started a scribe job this month. I had a bunch of other great experiences, but my clinical experience was only just adequate. All of the students I know at UWSOM worked multiple years in multiple, full-time clinic-type jobs. The thing I bring to the table, another career, just doesn't fit that mold.

This doesn't surprise me. Many of the students/residents I know attest that UWSOM is really starting to show more love to non-trads due to more life/clinical experience.

You'll be just fine. You're going to crush the **** out of whatever medical school is lucky enough to accept you.

I honestly think I would be the sort who would want to leave too. I've been here my whole life. I just happen to be in a place of life where I have kids, a spouse, ageing parents, and a house in King County, lol. UW was the only chance we had to not uproot everything. I didn't really even care about its prestige. This is just home.

Well, ironically, if you're a non-trad without a medical background it makes it near impossible to get into UW. Scribe/EMT/CNA work doesn't support a family.

Can I ask what you mean about reputation for quality of life for students being so bad? I have not heard anything for or against it.

Totally understand. I'm fortunate enough to be a recent grad where I don't have any real roots or ties to the area other than nostalgia and family/current friends. I would be a lot more disappointed if there were real financial and logistical consequences to which school I ultimately chose/was accepted to.

I love Seattle, and I love my alma mater. But I've never wanted to be the kind of person who stayed in one corner of the world all their life. I hope everything works out for you, and I'm sorry that things didn't end up working out here. I do hope you eventually get the opportunity to move back here and practice at home. That's what I hope as well 🙂

First two years seem great. However, their clerkship program requires you to basically move every 4-6 weeks. There's a minimum requirement of doing that for 6 months of two years. It's really not a great quality of life, unless you like renting crappy apartments with your classmates and living out of a suitcase.
If you don't know about their residency program, go ahead and follow their UWHA union on Instagram. They're posting all kinds of crap about how poorly they're being compensated and treated. I'll add that people often talk about 96-hour weeks "back in the day," etc, but I know a guy who worked 110 hour weeks as a UW resident, back in "the day." It's a big enough place that I'm sure there are a lot of mixed thoughts on it, but that's my impression.
 
If you do get into the UW you have to be super proactive in networking with your preferred residencies because there really isn’t enough time in those 4-6 weeks. In my experience from research and shadowing, the 3rd and 4th year uw students barely had time to settle down into the departments before they were shown the door. There’s literally no time to develop the relationships needed to make a good impression. Fortunately I’ve already made them and am super tight with the department I’m interested in but.... anyways this isn’t about me. I’ll im saying is if you want to be competitive for a residency spot you have to start soon, possibly even before you matriculate.

Ok cool, thanks for your thoughts. There seems to be a lot of confusion about clerkship requirements--I've seen 3 different UWSOM-produced materials that say 3 different things (12, 20, or 24 weeks outside of Seattle metro area for example). I would like some clarity, for sure. All that about the residency program is news to me...will definitely check it out. My partner and I really want to be in Seattle long term, but good training and good quality of life options elsewhere could overrule.

In the context of “renting crappy apartments with classmates.” UW provides housing (no rent) for every required rotation you spend away from your “home base.” I have only shared an apartment once. And the housing is generally pretty sweet, although variable. I have never been genuinely unhappy with it.

I think I am entering into the purgatory known as being an OOR applicant. Just got my residency status rejected from my WWAMI program (went to OOS school, paid taxes there which screwed me over, whoops).

First two years, I hear no complaints. It's just a little more competitive.
Clerkships require 6 months outside of King County, and I think like 3-4 months inside the county. It's a lot of bouncing around apartments, which apparently aren't bad. Still, that's a lot of suitcase living. Maybe no biggy to a 24-year-old single person, but to the parent with a spouse and a mortgage, much bigger deal. UW is not the only school that does this.
UWMC residencies, which a lot of UW students Match to, not so great on quality of life. Less vacation. Less pay. Less consideration for basic human needs, like eating. Follow UWHA online to hear the deets. Hopefully it improves as the union grows more influential.
 
Are there any Idaho residents (or other WWAMI states besides Washington) with IIs yet? I know the interview dates for these states aren't until January/February but I'm curious to see if they would send out IIs this early

I and my wife/daughter would all very much dislike that. Maybe UW is not a good choice with a family
 
So my Casper results may have been sent with the wrong AAMC ID. Anyone know if this will affect my application greatly if the issue is just now being fixed? Thanks!

Alaska and nothing yet. However, they did reach out for residency info. I only applied last Sunday, so 8-9 days ago. Taking Casper tomorrow.

Make sure to ask a follow up as to why, could be helpful if they get back to you before your interviews so you know what to cover. I'm sorry to hear about the R, but envious of all those interview invites!

I'm feeling ghosted right now by most of the schools I applied to. All the schools that have sent me invites got to me within three weeks of submitting their secondary. (UW, UNLV, PNWU)

Have you thought about sending letters of intent to some schools?

Same boat. And looking back at last year, they sent me the confirmation the same day as the Preferred Interview email. So not sure what's going on.

Especially because now that we've selected the date we can't look at other openings ECT. Which will suck if our first date pick doesn't work out and we missed out on the others.

I'm thinking if we don't hear back by tomorrow night a call or email would be prudent? Less than two weeks until the hypothetical interview afterall...

If your preferred date doesn't work out and the others are full or don't work for you, they will offer you new dates. If you do call them, let me know the results. I will be traveling and interviewing tomorrow and Monday so don't have time to follow up with UW until next week!

Hey, thanks! Don't be sorry; it just wasn't meant to be, and I'm very fortunate and grateful to have received a lot of love OOS 🙂

I believe UW only gives app feedback after January. I'm hoping that some of my early interviews (especially at two particular schools I fell in love with) bear acceptances by then *fingers crossed*.

I don't really want to send letters of intent until I receive a decision of being placed on the waitlist at a dream school and am holding an acceptance elsewhere. I figure these don't really mean much unless I can pointedly say, "Hey, I've received an acceptance at this great school, but YOUR school is really the one I want to attend." Otherwise, it just reeks of desperation, no? Maybe I'm wrong 🙂

Totally, I just want to interview sooner rather than later. And not conflict with other interviews/plans later in the year.

Update: Got in contact with the admin office. So, as can be expected, things are SUPER crazy rn with the start of the interview season. Times have not been solidified yet, but for those of us who selected October 9th as our preferred interview date did indeed get that day as our day to interview, just not what time of day yet. They hope to have that scheduled and emailed out by end of day for everyone interviewing the 9th and before.
 
So I just got the confirmation email for the 9th, afternoon interview. I Day approaches. Looking forward to meeting some of y'all!
 
So it's my birthday today. Was having a pretty nice day until 5:07pm (on a Friday night I might add). That's when my top choice and dream school decided to reject me. Thank you UW for everything. Thank you for making my 23rd birthday unforgettable. IS, regular MD, WA resident my whole life.
