2019-2020 UT Southwestern

Anyone have any idea what UTSW would say about schools turning grades P/F? My school turned things P/F but gave us the option to switch back to graded if we want, you don't SW would require this (provided the classes aren't med school prereqs)?

this agrees with the general TMDSAS guidelines as well:

  • April 30: Applicants holding more than one acceptance must choose one and withdraw from all other schools
  • May 15: After 5:00pm Texas medical schools will not offer positions to applicants already holding an acceptance from another Texas medical school
I would interpret it that way. Are you on WL for schools you would prefer to UTSW? No need to answer that publicly, but that is what you need to answer for yourself.
I would say April through May 15th. After May 15th, WL offers only to Texans with no other acceptances and OOS applicants.

To respond to these timelines: I've been in contact with the UTSW administration about dates going from here on out until matriculation, and here's what they said.

April 30th: withdraw all other acceptances except from your top choice of schools that you've been accepted to so far. You may remain on all waitlists, including waitlists of both TMDSAS and AMCAS schools.

May 15th: Texas schools (they said Texas schools, not TMDSAS schools, so I am assuming Baylor, TCU, etc. are included in this rule) can only make offers to applicants who have not received an offer of acceptance from any other Texas school after this date. This applies for both in-state and out-of-state applicants. Basically, if you've been accepted to another Texas school, this is the last day that you could hear back about getting off the waitlist at a different Texas school, whether you're in-state and participated in the match or you're out-of-state (like me!)

Hope this helps prevent some confusion out there regarding Texas timelines 🙂

@johnhutcg I just saw a statement from UTSW and a few other TX schools about these issues.

Covid-19 impact on TMDSAS EY 2021

Medpark housing is starting to offer units. I just declined mine. Hopefully everyone has signed up for housing if they need it.

Just wondering but how do most students get to campus? Is a car super necessary and if so how much does parking cost and how’s the traffic in the area?

MS1 here. Most of my classmates do drive to school (including myself), and parking on campus is $10 a month. There are several apartments close to campus along Maple Ave, Forest Park, and Medical District Dr, and commute time ranges ~5-15 minutes I'd say. Some people commute from suburbs (e.g. Irving, Plano, etc.) which would take longer. A couple apartments offer shuttle services to campus, and some people do choose to walk to campus. We have three campuses (North, South, and West), so some people walk to the campus closest to them and take a UTSW shuttle to a different campus. Lots of options!

Could any current students comment on what textbooks are used at UTSW during preclincs like anatomy, physio, biochem, pharm, etc? I've got 2 friends who are graduating med school and they said I could go through their books and see if I could use some of them

You don't need any textbooks. Each class has its own syllabus that the professors write (I didn't even read these because I don't learn well from reading). Most people use books like First Aid or Pathoma but you'll want to get your own when you start since they're updated every year.

Does UTSW award many merit scholarships? When? Do they wait to see who commits before considering them for aid?

Hi, are we sure about this? I'm on the WL here, but I thought by April 30th one needs to pick one of their acceptances, but can still remain on other schools' waitlists.

Pretty sure you’re right! I think this is how it goes: April 30th everyone must withdraw all but one acceptance (but you can remain on waitlists). Up to May 15, anyone can still be accepted off waitlist. After May 15, if you already hold an acceptance, you can’t accept any other offers and can’t be accepted off waitlist. (only for TX schools ofc)

@CupcakeCarabiner You can only hope for an offer from UTSW's Wait List until May 15 since you already have an acceptance at a TX school.

When does UTSW require us to commit to enroll and remove ourselves from other waitlists? Is there such a date?

Ya but we can just just plan to enroll right?
  • April 30
Last day to resolve multiple offers. This date applies to all medical schools across the nation. It is the final day an applicant can hold on to more than one offer from an LCME accredited medical school.
This is UTSW's exact wording. I can't pin it down any more than that. I believe if you have more than one acceptance you have to withdraw from the others by April 30. According to the example given on the AMCAS page, an applicant can stay on WL past April 30.

If your WL is from a Texas school though, you can only get an offer from them before May 15th.

Their wording in the offer letter seems to indicate that you have to CTE on 4/30, though they also said "strongly encourage". If you have any doubt, you should check with the admissions office directly to confirm instead of blindly taking a risk.

For those who have applied through the AMCAS system and thus have an AMCAS Application ID, we strongly encourage the utilization of the AMCAS Enrollment Tool as follows:
  1. Starting on February 19, 2020 you are able to indicate at which school(s) you plan to enroll.
  2. By April 15, 2020 reconcile all outstanding offers to no more than three.
  3. By April 30, 2020 commit to enroll at UT Southwestern or your school of preference and promptly withdraw from all other medical schools at which you are holding

Did some searching and realized that until after April30 the only option on AMCAS is to "plan to enroll". "Commit to enroll" only appears after April 30, so I'm guessing that UTSW requires us to "plan to enroll" on April30 and then commit to enroll soon after. But this should mean that we can stay on WL of other non-TMDSAS schools. Will probably call next week to confirm

Thanks for the help; if I were to withdraw from the other Texas school thereby losing my acceptance there, would UTSW be able to offer me admissions after May 15th since I no longer have an acceptance from a Texas school?

That would be a fool's wager.
8% of OOS applicants gain acceptance to any TX medical school and 7% end up matriculating.
I don't like your odds of getting a second acceptance by trying this ploy.

Let me quote you to yourself here: "No, my goal isn't particularly to attend a T20. I think many med schools are the same and I'm personally looking more at the city, feel at the school, and students' opinions rather than a name or ranking." and also "in my mind, you'll be a doctor no matter what med school you go to and if you put the effort in".

Take your own advice?

I’m pretty evenly split between deciding between two schools where I have acceptances, so I’m just wondering if this should be a factor in my decision. I’m not trying to game the system or anything- I just wanted to identify anything that might help me make the decision between the two I’m considering right now. But thank you for the reminder!

That makes sense if you are just musing about this, as you try to narrow down your 2 acceptances to 1 by April 30. I am not meaning to impugn your motives, but I suggest that rather than using the possibility of staying on a WL as a plus, to try to plainly compare the 2 schools which have accepted you in terms of their fit for your needs. Good luck with your decisions.

@wysdoc I am aware Plan to Enroll is April 30th....so Commit to Enroll is also April 30th? We are unable to remain on WL outside the state of Texas after April 30th if we "choose" Southwestern? Just needing to clarify

scroll up a few posts to where I quoted directly from the UTSW page. They want you to narrow down to 1 school by April 30. You may stay on WLs but you may only hold 1 acceptance after that.

@FiendingOnMedSchool and others, I need to correct my statement from March 7 above to say that:
While you do need to narrow your offers down to 1 Acceptance by April 30, you are allowed to stay on WLs after that date.

On AMCAS you would PTE (Plan to Enroll) at 1 school only, by April 30. You may stay on WLs and if you get any offers you will probably be asked, by the offering school, to make a choice rather promptly (2 weeks or less).
On AMCAS, if you ultimately change that PTE to a CTE, then you would have to withdraw from WLs as well.

On TMDSAS, while we don't exactly have the CYMS tool, they would like you to cut it down to 1 school by April 30.

For both application systems, your PRIMARY mode of communication in terms of accepting and withdrawing should be direct communication (usually email) with the admissions office of the schools involved. The online "tool is intended to supplement, not replace, that communication." (quote from AMCAS)

I’m confused, does this mean we need to email UTSW to accept the offer? I thought we just had to select them on TMDSAS?

If you are a Texan and you matched there, you're all set.
If you are OOS or if your UTSW offer came to you later after the Match Day, then yes accept via direct communication to UTSW>

Has there been any WL movement here yet? When does UTSW typically start accepting students from the WL? Worried because May 15 is creeping up.
