2019-2020 Washington State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do we know if the 13-minute one-on-one portion of the interview with an Adcom member is closed-file/blind? I'll be prepared to answer questions regardless, but it would help to know if I need to provide more background info if they haven't had access to my file.
I believe that 13 minutes is a true interview

Sorry, yes - the 13 minute interview is basically like a 1-on-1 mini-interview with an ADCOM who has read your whole file. At least that is what they told us at their conference in March...

Thanks! I was there at that conference, just must have missed the part about the 1-on-1 being open file. Its such a short time period for a traditional interview that it really helps if I don't have to provide the entire life story as background info lol

I don’t think you would. A little context here and there. But yah, the interview portion of that conference kinda broke down, didn’t it? Lol I either heard it there or when one of their reps came to EWU. But it was definitely from someone on their admissions committee stating that it is an open file.

Unfortunately their website does not clarify much:

Before each of the seven mini-interviews begin, you will be given a question or scenario and have two minutes to consider your answer. Upon hearing a signal, you will enter the interview room. You will respond to the question in a short conversation with an interviewer. After five minutes, a signal will sound again. You will have one minute to rotate to the next interview room—and the next question/scenario—in the circuit.

At the one-on-one interview station, you will have a question-and-answer-style interview with an Admissions Committee member, but you will not be exposed to the questions prior to entering the room like other mini-interviews”

My one-on-one interview was blind, but I'm not sure if they're still blind. I wouldn't worry about it.

Do you think anyone can help me with this prompt in the secondaries... kind of late to the party applying...

"Describe your connections to Washington communities and your interests in practicing medicine in Washington."

I am not sure what communities I should be mentioning. I was born and lived here all my life... I was thinking of the communities I am apart of like church, sports, etc?? But I am not sure how that translate to my interests in practicing in WA...

I mentioned family + friends who supported me through undergraduate studies, church community, and medical exposure in Washington. I used these as evidence for success in studying in Washington, but I also tied in some of the larger themes of community involvement in WA to show my commitment..

Washington communities
They are referring to specific WA health communities (rural, urban, underserved, tribal, etc.). Basically work you have done with a specific WA community in terms of interacting with them and treating them.

I did not answer it that way--I talked about the communities that my family and friends live in and where I've worked. However, I also talked about a specific at-risk group in WA that i am most interested in working with in the future, based on my clinical experience and shadowing. So I guess I did kind of a mix.

+1. Talked about the friends and family I have scattered across the state, as well as my connections to the underserved communities I worked with.

Pretty sure I also put some cheesy ass line like "I've been fortunate enough to travel all around the country and world, and my travels have only solidified my commitment to living and practicing within WA in the future." too lmao.

Thanks for all your input! Definitely have some ideas now... I think I will go down the route of talking about my family and friends, while incorporating my hobbies and passions, that I have started/participated in Washington and then somehow connecting it to medicine!

Absolutely loved my time at ESFCOM yesterday, and I finished the day much more excited about the school than I already was leading up to the interview. I would be incredibly proud to be a student here. 🙂

+1. I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed with the level of individualized support the students get from faculty/administration. The 10-year support plan was nuts! Facilities are pretty much brand-new, and I can definitely see the appeal/charm of Spokane. Hearing about how close the students are with only 80 students in each class was really nice. It's going to be difficult for another school to beat WSU when it comes to the level of institutional support and student camaraderie imo (huge for me). Could definitely see myself being super happy there!

Also, the interviewers were incredibly warm and friendly. Made the MMI super easygoing. For all you future interviewees, do NOT be intimidated. This was my first MMI experience, and it could not have gone better. Once you finish the first station, the nerves disappear (you literally do not have time to stress lmao).

Current M1 here. Even though we are only in our second week of class, I can tell you the level of support from the faculty, administration, and IT is amazing. They really listen to feedback from the previous years to make the experience for each incoming class better and better. PM me if you have questions about ESFCOM!

+1!!! Seems like such a great school!!

Can anyone tell me more about the student host program? Is it only for the night before the interview or can it be used for mutiple nights if needed?

I literally listed off “Born here, raised here, returned here after military, got married, had my child, went to undergrad, hope to practice.” Obviously more detailed, but I just took it as an opportunity to be like “I love you Washington State, love me too.” Being that WA is basically their mission statement, milk it.

Still haven't gotten an interview here. Starting to calculate the possibility that I said something offensive in my secondary essays or something 😆

Many applicants in previous years who submitted in July/August got interviews several months later.

Holy macaroni they need to cut this interview day down....Way more info than needed. Overall, good interview experience, pretty nice campus, MMI goes by FAST, and it felt relatively stress-free.

I felt the same way when I was there...it was awesome until it didnt end. The tour is soooo long.

Were you Aug 29th or last cycle?

Yah....they could easily cut the morning session in half, cut the tour down 30 minutes, shove those both in the beginning, run 2 MMI stations at once, hae us outta there by 3.

Aug 26, first day of interviews. It was hot. I had to drive back to seattle that night...that drive has never felt so long lol

I had to drive back to Seattle right after my interview day, AMA.

I can imagine. I used to do that drive every weekend when I was stationed at Lewis...It is a short drive, relatively, but it can be so....damn.....long

To be fair, it’s a gorgeous drive, though. I also got ticketed for not stopping completely coming off the off-ramp because I was distracted looking for a decent place to grub...not a great drive overall.

If you take the back roads until the pass (cutting through the wheat fields) it adds like 50 miles, but I have made the drive in about 2.5 hours going around 110. Cush route.

This is probably due to their style of application review, which I really like. Two adcoms see every application, three in some cases, with the MCAT and gpas removed. MCAT/gpa are only used for initial screening, due to ESFCOM using graduation statistics and gpa/MCAT info to determine their sliding scale requirements. They use the data where they feel it is most applicable and then review applicants without it.

I think it is a really neat and equitable system that looks at a person and not numbers.

Feeling that pain, completed 8/9, but havent heard a thing, feeling a little concerned I said something. Its one of my top choices. The University of Nevada sent me an invite to interview in just a couple weeks and im OOS...

No offense, if you’re out of state it’s going to be a whole lot tougher to get an invite. WSU was literally founded by President Floyd to help only Washington communities. Unless you have a strong tie to the area then... yeah idk what else to say. Congrats on the nevada invite. I wanted that but probably won’t get that one

Agreed. The Dean emphasized this over and over again at the interview. I had virtually zero rural experience (lot of urban underserved experience), but they said their most important factor is a demonstrated commitment to serve the state of Washington.

Very very much so. They want Washingtonians schooled in Washington to treat Washingtonians with an extra emphasis on Washingtonians.

Plus a little bit of rotation in Portland if you are in the Vancouver site, but they deemphasize that lol

Worth mentioning then I was born and raised in Yakima Wa and intend to live here the rest of my life if I can, I mentioning the Nevada bit because I found it strange to hear back from them before ESFCOM.

UW Grad, lots of underserved and rural exp in Washington.

ESFCOM is slowly making their way through apps. Their interview season runs through January. No need to fret.

Trying not to, just hard not to be neurotic and check the threads worrying if I said something wrong or misspelled a word that might have messed me up . Wasn't, and still am not really, sure how their review processed worked outside of the screening. Need to find a way to relax or take my mind off. I'm liking seeing the interview experiences though, Although I'm not jealous of a long tour during august in Eastern Wa. I may live here, but I'm a winter, fall, early spring kinda guy.

Go Dawgs (and Cougs 😉)

I know its football season, not basketball, but go Zags!!!
Zags are overhyped. The basketball team is good enough, but the school is just filled with a bunch of rich California snobs who all think Spokane is garbage. Source: lived 22 years 3 blocks from the campus.

Also source: attended there before the snobs took over. Schools is trying to be "Notre Dame of the west". V sad. Still love the bball.

Ps my mom grew up on Augusta, she had stories like her and her siblings pulling up new saplings planted on campus to build a fort on their back yard in the 50s/60s

Also fun story (last distraction from WSU): my gma lived in the house on Augusta until she died when I was in college. My cousins bought the house and rented it to college students. At one pt senior year, my roommate and I are on our way to a party and she wants to stop and pick up a friend...at that house. I didnt say anything, just looked around at this new setup in my gma's house. But one of the tenant's mom is visiting and she starts talking about weird stuff happening and how the house is haunted. Pictures moving on the walls. Someone going through her suitcase. I loved every second of it bc my dear little Irish grandmother (and fey aunts to boot) swore there was a ghost in the house. My family was never bothered by good old "Casper", but I thought it was hilarious that he was bugging the snobby California tenants and their moms!
