2020-2021 Hofstra (Zucker)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
is this mainly for people without II?

I'm guessing it's for people without interviews because it references interview invitation decision instead of interview decision. Also, I have an II from Hofstra and didn't receive this email so that's another reason why I think it's only been sent to people without II.

I just signed up for my interview and I selected the PM session. But the confirmation email only states the date I chose and not the time I chose. I should be good for the time I chose, right?

I think you should be good. I signed up for an AM session on a day with only the AM session option, and it didn't specify whether I had chosen AM/PM. I believe we'll get an email with more details one week before our interview day so that should have the appropriate details.

Until what dates have interview dates been filled up?

Any other MD/PhD applicants get an email about a monthly chat between applicants and current students? What's up with that? Is this in addition to the interview?

Yeah, I also got the email. I've already interviewed (last week), in my case, so I'm not sure exactly what's up - from the wording, this isn't required though! Just a chance to talk with current students, who were very nice during the actual interview as well.

Yeah, I interviewed last month and the students were super great to speak to. I just wonder what more we are going to talk about.

It might just be to create a sense of community? I think at one point during mine there was a convo about the downsides of virtual interviews, and it was mentioned that with virtual we can't get to know fellow applicants during the interview trail, missing the face-to-face casual time that isn't all of us sitting awkwardly in a Zoom room 😆

I just reset my date and swiped the 12/22 interview slot. It doesn't seem like Hofstra penalizes you for doing it, they just lock it in 48 hours before each slot I believe.

If you reset it, do you risk losing your original interview spot or can you rebook it again if nothings sooner is available?

I just bit the bullet and reset it to look for earlier date. I couldn't find one, so I went back to my old date and rescheduled on the same date.

I strongly recommend you do this at odd time during the day haha. Or I might snipe your interview date 😉

Can you clarify what you mean by "they just lock it in 48 hours before each slot"? Thanks.

Is anyone lurking on this page a current student? I'm interviewing here on 11/23 and I would love to talk to people!

For those of you who completed VITA before you received the VITA invite from Zucker, do you recall how long it was for them to review your application before sending an invitation to interview/ rejection to interview? Thanks in adv!

~ 1 business day between VITA invite from Zucker and live interview invite from Zucker when VITA was already complete for another school... I think this is what you're asking lol

These short turnarounds make me feel like they're not fully reviewing the VITAs lol

Hey y'all! I was complete early aug and haven't heard anything yet. How does Hofstra feel about pre-II update letters? I don't have a significant updates but I'm IS, live near the school, & familiar with the Northwell system 😳 I know some schools love to hear your continued interest in them so was unsure

Vita invite might not be an automatic II for MD/PhD. Completed Vita 11/05. No II.

MD/PhD II just now. I will update the post later with dates for people who are frantically refreshing every school thread like myself.

Edit:
Vita Completed 11/05
MD/PhD II 11/20
Option between two interview days in January

I think that there is a certain general date where they start getting back to people in December. Does anyone know when that is?

During my interview they said sometime around mid-December. They said there's no specific date but just around there.

Did you send any additional information? Trying to decide.

You mean like an update letter or something? Nope. I just wrote a thank you note to my interviewers. My interview was just this past Friday though. But I also don't think I'll be sending an update - I don't really have any significant application changes.

Yeah sorry should have been more clear. I interviewed back in October and was thinking about sending a letter of interest. Though I think I will just wait it out. No-one likes a beggar lol! They seemed to not want updates but that was just the vibe I got.

Ohh I see. I don’t know about Hofstra specifically but I know some schools love or are really receptive to updates - try looking into it a bit more. Though they do have space for it on the portal so I’d imagine they’re fine with them. If you feel like you have a significant update that you want them to know about then you should consider sending it!

Would someone be able to provide some insight on the format of the interview? i.e. how long was the MMI, were there a lot of ethical questions. I get that there's not too much detail you can give, but whatever general info would be appreciated! Thanks!

VITA has replaced the MMI this year. Hofstra is using two traditional interviews in conjunction with VITA

Do you think it is too risky to reset your interview to try and get an earlier one?

There's no MMI this year, they're using the 6 VITA questions as a sort of replacement for each station. You have 2 one-on-one interviews, which will make 8 total "MMI" stations that they will grade your entire interview on. The interviews were conversational but they had a lot of annoying situational/traditional job interview questions. The interviewers themselves were amazing and very nice though.

I feel like it depends on when your interview is scheduled for. Mine was scheduled for February so I felt like I had little to lose resetting but still re-setted early in the morning (like 6AM) a few times when I figured not many people would be on. I was able to re-schedule to next week!
