2020-2021 Toledo

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm like a huge Suits nerd, but yea know? My dream is to become a type of doctor upon hearing whose name people go: Doctor Who?. Like who else is a whovian here? Matt smith hand down best doctor though he bought a certain playfulness to his role that just wasn't there before and hasn't been there since. He also was able to convey true character emotions flawlessly. Also finally I am also down to watch some k dramas now and then, the recent one -it's okay not to be okay -takes the cake imo...
"Matt smith hand down best doctor..."

Them's fighting words. 😉

Best Doctor = William Hartnell.

And I second House and Lucifer. And Star Trek of course. TNG and DS9 are my favorites. Best character shall always be Garak.

I guess Hartnell for me would be first if only looking for the old series but since I like the new series better( I know blasphemy for some) I usually rank then based on that, and regardless dr matty boy still just resonated with me.... Also lucifer and house and all the other series mentioned still now, they are all in list but it has been so long for some since I researched then, but this discussion has forced me to alter my viewing queue for next few weeks( in a good way) to reminece the pre covid times...

Is it worth sending an update letter right now? Or is it best to wait until they start sending interview invites?

If you have substantial updates it can’t hurt. I sent an update to let them know my grades from last semester and that some research I was working on was published.

Wow, I don’t know how Toledo is going to pull this one off lol! Any bets on when the II will finally come out?

Anyone think they just won’t interview this year? I know it’s probably impossible for that to happen but I really wonder how they’re going to interview a ton of applicants and get decisions out within a few months.
I think that they still will but that people who interviewed will hear back very fast at least until the March deadline. But that’s just my opinion which doesn’t hold any weight lol

My opinion carries no weight too, but I think this is true. Honestly even if they do send IIs this week, they won't be able to start actually interviewing until next week. To meet the 175 requirement, I think they're pretty much gonna have to accept the first 175 people who interview unless the students are absolute psychopaths or if they lied or something serious like that... I don't think you can fully/realistically interview, discuss, and revisit 175 files in two months lol.

But also they took literally minimum 2 months to reply people about decisions last cycle (Post interview). Based off their current trajectory I can’t imagine them having the 175 by March. Also what is the enforcement mechanism of the March cutoff, it almost seems like a suggestion from AAMC

The enforcement mechanism is a good point. I don’t know what the consequences are (a fine? an email with a frown-y emoji?). As for the turnaround, that’s why I think the interviews for at least the first 175 will just be formalities. Obviously my opinion is based on absolutely nothing lol

Maybe they’ll just email the AAMC for an extension, and that’ll be that.

EDIT: Yoire right, the language used is pretty explicit that the AAMC only recommends these traffic rules. So I don’t think anything would happen if no one is accepted before April (except that their top picks might have already been accepted somewhere else).

As it gets later and later, I really wonder how this is going to turn out. Even if they started interviewing today, that's still a lot of files to go over and a lot of time spent making decisions, and the people doing that have other responsibilities as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if the interview ends up being more of a formality: just weed out anyone who's blatantly unsuitable and accept the rest. I also wouldn't be surprised if they choose to forego their usual MMI style interview in favor of a more traditional one, because that's less time-consuming and requires coordinating fewer people. On the other hand, they've also dropped a lot of time and apparently a lot of money on whatever this interview platform is, so who knows?

Even then, they run into the issue of people who've decided they prefer to go elsewhere, but who haven't withdrawn their Toledo application, which means that now they have to interview more people. I'm aware this is an issue for every school, but I suspect there are more than normal this year.

The absolute nightmare scenario would be if they're still working through this in May, when people who haven't gotten in this cycle are spending $$$$ to reapply for next year...only to get an acceptance from Toledo.

I really wish they'd at least send us a dang email. All the other schools I applied to have done that.

I'd be interested to get adcom input on this situation @Goro @LizzyM @gonnif University of Toledo still hasn't sent a single interview out for this cycle. Is the March deadline for sending out 175 acceptances (size of the class) just a suggestion or something that is enforced? Do you think that at this point interviews will just be a formality for the school? More importantly, is this going to be the latest first interview invite batch (if it ever comes) in the history of medical school admissions? They have apparently changed their website to say that they will be interviewing through May 0_o.

they haven't? That's really weird! It makes me wonder if they intend on matriculating a class in the Fall!

If anything, they're setting themselves up to have a class that only from the Toledo region and/or desperate.

Sorry for weird post above lol, but yeah, does Toledo take pre-II updates like a letter of interest?

This is something I wanted to do, but it seems desperate, especially since I'm already an underdog.

I thought we should avoid pre-II letters of interest because that's the purpose of the secondary?

I wouldn't write a pre-II letter of interest (a secondary is proof you are interested) but if you have valuable updates such as new grades, new experiences, and the like I don't see why you wouldn't upload it pre-II.

Does a new research job/promotion count? What about JAMA pub that was pending now being accepted (I mentioned on primary app)?

I wonder if they already reviewed most/all of their applicants (5.4k applicants which with the rise is around 7k applicants) which is presumably doable to review especially since their secondary closed on Dec. 15th. Ready for the blood bath that is the II wave here that is fighting for time slots x.x

On another note, on MSAR they had this to say about interview day:
" For the 2020-2021 interview cycle, we will conduct synchronous, virtual Multiple Mini Interviews (MMI). Our on-line MMIs will be from August to March, with the majority of our interviews in the fall. If you're invited for an interview, the email we send you will contain additional information including technical requirements and access to the web-based platform. Your email will also contain additional information regarding in-person visit/tour days and other opportunities to get to know our community and campus better."

This...did not age well 😛

The pub is really good so I would certainly send it in. It's helpful that Toledo doesn't limit updates from what I know.

Big brain toledo actually interviewed only applicants without SDN accounts to fuel neuroticism

I mentioned a new job in my LOI. But I -just- started it.

They haven't been sending interview invitations at all this cycle??? or did you mean to say that they haven't made any offers of admission? Please clarify before my head explodes.

They haven't sent any regular MD interview invites at all from what we gather here.

Wow... that is super-peculiar. Has anyone reached out to current students there to see if they've heard anything on the ground. Usually schools engage current students as tour guides and sometimes use M3 or M4 students as interviewers. I wonder if anyone there would know if students have even been solicited yet to fill those roles.

I reached out to a friend who is a current student. He/she hasn't noticed anything fishy going on, nor heard anything about interviews. But alas, N=1.

The admissions team has also confirmed as much when I’ve and others have emailed them. They’ve stated since October that invites would be going out in a week or two.
