2020-2021 UT Medical Branch

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone that's interviewed receive a thank you letter from the admissions? I believe it was a generic thank you from a MS but Im not sure.

Yes, we’re sending thank you cards to everyone who has interviewed 🙂 It’s just a nice personal follow-up since we don’t get to meet any of you in person.

Also I’m an MS3 if anyone had quick questions but the application process and some of the first year courses have changed recently so probably better to ask an MS1 or MS2 if you have questions about that.

I figured! It was a nice gesture/surprise, before I opened it I thought it was for sure an R lol.

Same here! Been almost a month since I interviewed.. as long as others are in the same boat I guess nothing to worry about too much.
McGovern was on my TMDSAS list the same day I interviewed there so maybe UTMB is just taking their time.

Is there a way to confirm that my CASPER score has been received?

Does it matter if the school has or has not shown up on the rank list? I thought that only mattered for match in the spring

Is the portal supposed to say "Your application is ready" or is it supposed to say "Your application is under review"? I have "Your application is ready" so a little worried

Yes it’s supposed to say that

Did you guys receive an email saying you were complete and forwarded to review? I was confused by this:

Thank you for submitting your Supplemental application and fee (unless waived) for admission to the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine 2021 entering class. When we have received your MCAT and CASPer score, your application will be forwarded to the Admission Committee for review.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine.

I was wondering if I should follow up to make sure everything is received.

Just look at your status on your portal.

It says "Your application is ready" and not "Your application is under review"
Mine says "your application is ready" as well and I haven't heard anything back yet since I submitted 7/6. I don't think they send an email when your application is placed under review, but if you've completed everything required (secondary app, MCAT and CASPer) and have green checkmarks then you should be good

How are people dressing for the student social the night before the interview?

I interviewed early September. People were dressed dessy-casual or nicer. I am a male, and personally, I wore a button-down collared shirt and jeans

Any MD/PhD applicants here? I'm OOS and just got a secondary (AMCAS verified 7/31), I'm curious how many MD/PhD applicants get one since this took a while...

I just got this today as well. I'm also OOS. Maybe they did an initial review, and this is the first round. I was a little surprised because I had just emailed them a few days ago about information since I had heard nothing lol

Do you know if this is the first batch of MD/PhD secondary invites? I can't imagine that it is being that it's so late.

No idea. I would think no since other MD/PhD programs are already doing interviews...maybe first batch for OOS? I know UTMB only takes like 10% OOS or something like that.

Can someone who already interviewed at UTMB or who's currently at UTMB give me some tips for my upcoming interview please? I am literally freaking out.
Can you tell me more about what I should focus on when they ask me why this specific school? And any other general tips will also help me. Thank you.

I interviewed recently, it was pretty casual. For answering "why this school?", just talk about what makes you want to go to UTMB. Be genuine, you can talk about their curriculum and how it has PBL, you can talk about wanting to live in Galveston, wanting to pursue the scholarly concentrations they offer, etc. There are many reasons to pick a particular medical school, just identify what stands out about UTMB and talk about that.

As far as general tips, their interview system was very glitchy for me. During the 1st interview the audio was pretty terrible so I asked if we could use phone call for audio and the interviewer was ok with that and called my phone. For the 2nd interview, my interviewer wasn't able to use the system so he invited me on some other videochat platform and we did the interview there. Keep your phone charged and handy just in case you encounter problems with the interface.

My interviews were really relaxed. Be sure to have some answers for the generic questions (why medicine, etc) but also have some stories prepared from your experiences. I don't think I can go into detail but just think about your experiences and see if you can think of three things from them-- lessons, strengths, and weaknesses.

As for "why UTMB?" this one will vary based on what your app is like. UTMB caters to just about everything. If you're into research, you can talk about how they have so many research opportunities available and bring up their BSL4 lab if you're interested in that. If you're more community service-oriented, you can talk about their Community Health track; likewise, if you're into aerospace med, medical humanities, etc., you can talk about one of those tracks (just do a quick search of their tracks and find what you like). Their student orgs also entertain some unique hobbies and interest groups so do a search on those too. Also, living on the beach would be pretty great. Best of luck!

I know pre-match this year starts on Oct. 15, but has UTMB said anything about whether they're gonna start sending out pre-matched then or wait a bit more?

For those of you that interviewed, is it closed file or open file? I just see it is two 30min interviews. Is it structured or is it conversational?
Open file. One of my interviews was more structured with several questions while the other was completely conversational.

mine were also open file. my interviewers said they had 3 required questions to ask me, but in between them, they had follow up questions to my answers

Anyone still not have UTMB on their pre-match page on TMDSAS? I interviewed over a month ago (beginning of September) and it's still not on there for me!

Don't worry - it will appear eventually! A school does not have to show up on your School Rank Preference List to be eligible to pre-match with them starting next week (or whenever UTMB sends the first batch of pre-match offers). You only need the rank list to submit your final preferences in Feb 2021 for the TMDSAS match in March 2021.

Is there a pre-interview night social for UTMB?
