2020-2021 Wayne State

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
With a 100th percentile MCAT, I don't know how every school hasn't taken you haha.

But I empathize, very similar situation, except opposite for MCAT and GPA (4.0 GPA through Wayne State's grad GPA replacement policy and 508 MCAT), and outside of taking the MCAT again, I really don't know what else I can do to improve my application, and this is me saying that after applying here a second time...
Stay hopeful. I know Wayne is a sucker for good GPAs. Hope our cycles pick up very soon

Thanks cuz. Honestly my main worry is just seeing all these applicants get IIs who applied early. I wasn't even able to submit my primary until early July due to my school not being able to process my transcripts 🙁

i wonder when they'll start taking people off the waitlist - cause i know they say that you're constantly reviewed at every "meeting" but i wonder what the odds are of that happening early

The whole application cycle is an absolute crapshoot. Applying early is definitely advantageous. A perfect example here, and I'm not in any way trying to come off as "oh look at me": I submitted all of my 17 secondaries in July/early August.... 508 mcat, 4.0 GPA... 6 MD interviews so far including Wayne, 3A, and zero Rs. White male at an average school, but I do have a good amount of volunteering. I was worried sick after getting that surprise MCAT score back in June, 9 points off my average practice lol. But things sort themselves out. Good luck with the rest of the cycle everyone!!

It definitely feels that way this cycle. But again, it doesn't feel fair to us folks who couldn't get their apps in super early due to COVID reasons. Like, you would think as medical schools they would be a bit more empathetic to that this time around.

Just because you haven’t gotten them yet doesn’t mean they won’t come, I have many friends who are at top 20 schools who didn’t have their first interview until December/January

Same, I literally got a reapplicant appointment and the advisor didn't know what to tell me.(3.92 GPA, 511 MCAT, lots of clinical volunteering at local hospitals) I know a few people inside the adcom and I've been told that your file depends on one screener. If this person has screened his stack of applicants and doesn't think that you are good enough, well, they usually drag you along till February to give you that rejection. Best advice is to include updates because the screener gets a notification for every update. So that could increase your chance of your screener to revisit your app!

I'm so nervous for this interview. Are the faculty/student interview 30 min each? Also do the MMI scenarios involve actors? Appreciate your insight
In my experience (interviewed 11/16) there were no actors. The people who conduct the mmi will ask you a few questions about the prompt and it takes like 5 mins per station. I found it a little uncomfortable because the interviewers appear to be trained not to give you even a nod or a smile or anything to make you feel like youre going in the right direction. Faculty and student interviews are 35 mins. Its mostly get to know you questions with a few ethical decision making questions spiced in.

Not the original guy that responded but my interview experience summed up was Casper like for all parts; student interview, faculty, and mmi’s

I had this same experience with the MMI, none of the interviewers smiled or nodded, but I realized that so it didn't throw me off. But as for the one on ones, the one piece of golden advice I got for this interview was to know my AMCAS primary application in and out. Make sure you can talk about your experiences.

To some extent, yes. Its hard to guage how many posters on the feedback page did their interview on this new virtual format, but its a good idea to have a really solid answer to the "why wayne" question (bc i was literally asked "university of michigan is just down the road and its a wonderful school so why wayne and not them?") and other than that i got MMI / ethics questions during the stations and during the student interview that were verbatim from list of practice prompts on the BeMo website's mmi page. Hope that helps!

Interesting because i didnt really get asked about anything on my amcas activities directly. I talked about some of them, but most of both of my interviews were more ethical dilemma situations. Also I think its important to have some anecdotes about ethical dilemma situations in your own life and how you responded/coped with it. Im glad to know you had the same experience with the mmi people (someone was literally reclining in a chair with her eyes closed while i was talking which was really making me worried).

This way my experience, I had pretty much nothing on my Amcas asked about

thanks so much! guess i need to go study up on michigan now and learn about why they arent a good fit for me? LOL

My faculty one on one was the opposite, got grilled about the finest details about my AMCAS primary but then the interviewer really warmed up to me and we ended up deviating. As for the student interview though, I do agree, I got more ethical questions there.

both my student and faculty were almost 100% about my application and asking me about my experiences. By the end I felt like I’d touched on all of my app and then some. There were a few ethical, but it was very conversational and always seemed to direct to my own experiences.

This. 100% my experience

so not a lot of "why medicine" and "why MD and not NP" type of things?
Not in Mine, there was a “why medicine” because they wanted to know your story but that’s every interview at any school basically. What I’m gathering is that your interview style will greatly depend on your interviewer.

Yeah you definitely still need to know why medicine and why Wayne but yeah as medigal said, the interview style will greatly depend on the interviewer (some will be more interested in your application, others may give more ethical scenarios, etc.) so prepare for both 🙂

ooh interesting my student one was 100% ethical questions and nothing about my application (i don't think they have access to your application anyways) but the faculty one was definitely more structured around specific experiences

My student interviewer had my app pulled up and referenced it a few times...interesting

I've been complete since 7/23 and it has been complete silence... is this likely a silent R?
Not necessarily, no one knows the in's and out's of the admissions process but you aren't rejected until your rejected. People receive IIs in January after being complete in July so don't count yourself out yet!

LMAO it's good that you picked up on that and were confident in your answers. I know these are common tactics to make people lose their train of thought

For the MMI so it's not the typical 2 min reading and 8 min response? I wish they told us more in the email.

You should be able to see the specifics on the portal, if not they will send another email the day before the interview. In any case, just prepare for the MMI as you would for any other. You will get a sufficient amount of time to review the prompt and more than enough time to provide your response in addition to any follow-ups, if needed. Wayne had a VERY low stress interview day, don't worry too much about it and make sure you get enough sleep the night before 🙂 Best of luck!

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your detailed reply and congrats on getting in 🙂

Good to know! Thanks for the info!

Late September. I just don’t understand, this is literally my third time applying and making changes so like at this point, idk what else they could want...
oh man I'm so sorry. wishing you the best! have they ever provided feedback on how to improve for the next cycle?
