2021-2022 Iowa (Carver)

Hey all, I had a pretty weird undergrad trajectory and most of my clinical experience is from greater than 5 years ago. I'm planning on being clear about the dates and still listing them on my secondary. Is this a bad idea?
Lying about it or ommitting it would only be worse, so it doesn't really seem like you have an option here.

I don't see how it could hurt you to list your experiences. At worst, some schools might say, "this is a long time ago, we're not going to count it", which isn't any worse than saying, "this person doesn't have any clinical experience at all".

Mixed up 2 numbers on my social security number and already submitted my secondary. What do I do now?

Hi, for everyone who complete the interview, how many thank you email you sent? I know they don't want you to send thank you email to the interviewers, but how about all other staff and students during the interview? Should I just send a generic thank you email and basically thank everyone?

From what it seemed like from my interview day, they don’t want thank you letters at all. One of the admins said that a “thank you” in-person is enough.

OS here, just got the II :) Does everyone think we can trust that in-person vs. online interviews really won't make a difference in the admissions process?

You can totally trust it. At my in-person interview they emphasized that the admissions committee will be totally blinded to your interview type. Additionally, they said that both the in-person interview and virtual interview are structured to have the same recorded video sessions to ensure that all applicants have similar experience.

Wait, is the actual interview portion of the in-person interview day still done via video? I think that's what I'm understanding from your answer, but I'm not sure if I'm reading it correctly...

No! Sorry for the confusion. Just a few recorded bits like the information sessions “about the school”. You still have in person interviews, a tour of the facilities, and in person case-based learning session.

Will they let you know your exact interview time on the day of the interview? I'm interviewing next week, and all I know is that 1:30-4:00 is interviews/CBL, but the interview is 25 min and CBL is 60 so that shouldn't take up the entire time, right?

Yes, they have a schedule that you’ll get to see when you’re there with an exact time and who you’re interviewing with! For my day they split us up into two different groups, one group did CBL while the other group interviewed and then we switched.

Primary Submitted to CCOM 10/05/21, Secondary+ Submitted 10/07/21. Does anyone know how long it takes for CCOM to verify the LOR and process your payment?

It depends on your residency, I think in-state residents got processed faster than out-of-state residents.....

My odds for CCOM are super low, but im hanging onto a thread of hope. Sent an update letter today about new research publications. Good luck friends :)

In past threads they have sent first acceptances around October 15th for a couple of years now.
If I interviewed second week of September, would it be reasonable to hear back Oct 15th?
I also interviewed around the same time. I know someone who's currently at Iowa that interviewed in early September and was accepted the very first day, but one of my friends got told at her interview it will take at least 6 weeks for them to get back to us. So do with that what you will, I'm trying not to get my hopes up but would love to hear on Friday :)

I think they give the 6 week timeline so they can have wiggle room if delays occur but I would be shocked if some ppl didn’t here back on the 15th

I’m a third time applicant that interviewed the last two years. I’m paranoid because my last IIs came like 3 weeks after I was complete and this year I’m currently at 4 weeks. I know I need to chill but I can’t.

And BTW for folks that don’t know and have been talking about how long it’ll take to hear back. They’ll send some A’s out in their roll phase but most interviewed applicants will be told in January they’re in the final pool and then get their actual decision in March. You could get an A next week, in a month, in January, or have to wait all the way until final pool placement at the end of January to hear anything at all.

Hi everyone! I'm a current M1 at Carver. I just created this account and thought I'd share some of my info/experiences for those of you in-staters who are anxious about applying or are deciding on whether to come to Carver. (Out-of-staters I know have tougher competition so I can't say if my experiences will directly translate.) I gained a lot of reassurance from reading posts by current students when I was applying so I hope this will help at least one of you!

The first thing I will say is "relax" - you got this! I am a master procrastinator and only submitted my primary application on the night of 11/1/20 and my secondary application on the night of 12/15/20 (both the deadlines). I received an interview invite on 12/17/20 and interviewed virtually (as there was no other option last cycle) on 1/6/21. I got waitlisted and ultimately accepted on 5/2/21. This was my first year applying, I did not have strong stats (see below), and I did not submit my application early. My undergraduate major was non-science and I took a gap year to do research in a basic sciences lab. All I really had going for me were hundreds of shadowing hours and a diverse array of letters of recommendation. So my point is: You all got this! You'll do great! I will also be helping on some days to give guided tours of CCOM so if you come for an in-person interview, you just might see me! Congrats to those who are receiving their acceptances today (10/15)!!!

In-State, MCAT: 509, Science GPA: 3.80, Cumulative GPA: 3.91

Also a few notes:
- One of my friends got a 505 MCAT and is at Carver as well so don't be discouraged if your MCAT score isn't where you would like it to be! Other parts of your application can more than make up for your lower MCAT score.
- I also have a friend who got a 523 MCAT and got accepted in October 2020, before I even submitted my primary application. Think about that! There's a wide range of applicants who will make up the student body next year so just believe in yourself and go for it! You've worked so hard and I'm sure it will pay off in the end.
- I'm sure most of you already know this, but it's better to have a lower overall MCAT score with similar subsection scores than a higher overall MCAT score with very lopsided subsection scores. Medical schools want to see a well-rounded person, not someone who just does well in one or two areas.
- Carver does still auto-send an interview offer for every in-state applicant with a 505+ MCAT and 3.5 GPA (could be 3.2 GPA - don't quote me on that).
- The interview won't make-or-break you. It's meant to weed out the people who don't have adequate people-skills (and the psychos) so as long as you don't completely bomb your interview, it won't help or hurt your application much.
- The interviews take place right next to the Learning Communities where all of us medical students (mostly M1s and some M2s) gather to socialize and study so you can take a look at the Carver experience if you would like during your downtime.
- The atmosphere at Carver is incredibly collaborative ("We are all in this together") as everyone is willing to help each other out! This may not be the same at other medical schools so if you get accepted to Carver, I'd definitely take this into consideration!
- Also, there's plenty of free food during the week and we often have college-wide events to help everyone socialize and just forget about school. I've perhaps only brought or paid for my own lunch/dinner a couple times over the last month!

Thanks for sending this! I think they also have 123 subsection cut off for secondaries, I am also instate, but didn’t apply last year because my CARS is under 123 the first time (even though my overall score is similar to yours), I called and they told me that I will be screen out even I submitted my primary. I had to retake my MCAT, it has been very rough as a non trad and reapplicant. It is encouraging read your post, since I am under a lot of fears and anxiety about not getting in even though I have much better stats now. Thank you and good luck to everyone else!
