Would it be crazy to not submit a secondary? I’ve written like 47 applications at this point and am burnt out. Seems like a low fraction of those who get secondaries receive an II. When I applied before, I couldn’t convert the secondary into an II. And my app has become worse.
Totally up to you, but it's worth keeping in mind that the same logic applies to all schools, so why return any secondaries? 😎

Also, fun fact you might be unaware of -- you are not alone here. Only around 70% of all secondaries are returned. Burnout is a real thing for everyone.

I did graduate a while back though and I have heard reports that crime is up, I just tend to ignore those reports because it feels like for years all anyone was talking about was Chiraq and that was never my experience.
I know this is a bit late and on the UCSF page, but I want to chime in here as a current U of C undergraduate (senior).

Crime is absolutely a problem here, and the only reason you don't hear about it is that the University cares far too much about its reputation and image to actually report nor do anything about it, most of the time. The campus 'borders' are structured in a way that essentially all student robberies and crime relating to students and/or near off-campus apartments are 'off campus' so the administration has no obligation to acknowledge it or report on it. Even then, the amount of reported student-related crime is upsetting.

I would go as far as to say that if you are not an undergraduate living on campus, do not attend this school. I applied to Pritzker because I could, for free, but I have no intention of coming here and would pick a significantly lower-ranked school over Pritzker in a heartbeat. I've lived off-campus for 6 months and have developed anxiety, general feelings of unwellness, and a constant state of fear because of the absolute ****show that is the off campus housing (in addition to the financial situation which I will touch on later).

In 6 months here I have heard of or witnessed myself:
1. Gunshots within 5 blocks of my apartment (not from pistols, be aware, but from cheap ARs like Dracos which can stray fire easily) at least once/3 days
2. An actual murder behind someone I know's apartment. Straight up. When I went to my research building there was still blood on the floor and caution tape everywhere. They also heard the screams, gunshots, and whole deal which was absolutely abhorrent. This was 1 block from the 'campus border' but in the parking lot of an apartment where many students live
3. Reports of apartment break in, student robberies, armed robbereis, carjackings, etc. multiple times per week
4. Two dead students, including one who died on the way back from work downtown on the CTA (shot, stray bullet, which in my opinion somehow makes it worse)

I could go on but for the sake of not doxxing myself I'll just leave it at that. If anyone has any questions feel free to DM me. As safe as campus is (it definitely is, though there are occasional muggings in the southern part of campus, the places where students live is honestly not safe, or at least at bare minimum it surely doesn't feel like it. And to make matters worse, all the rich college students eat up the good apartments, which are already managed by toxic parties. So odds are you'll get stuck with a trash apartment in a trash location like most of us who have to deal with this crap.

Ironically, the University actually just announced increased safety borders and safety measures (i.e. free lyfts for students coming back from hospital/other off campus stuff), probably in response to the recent murder 1 block from campus. If you don't believe it's bad, the fact that the University is actually finally taking action should be enough of a signal.

I’ll try to keep this short since I don't want to waste everyone's time discussing Hyde Park too much in the UCSF forum 🤣

If you're a 4th year now then we likely never overlapped on campus. I completely understand that your experience may be very different from mine, but I never felt unsafe in Hyde Park. At least not more unsafe than in any large American city. I lived off-campus for two years, a few summers, and my partner lived there for an additional year after we graduated.

I did read about those two students and was extremely saddened to hear that they were victims of violence. I wont discount that these two incidents in close succession are likely damaging the feeling of safety on campus. I also don't know how the campus reacted to COVID at all. And I definitely agree about the terrible system for off-campus housing, the landlords are very predatory and many apartments seem to be handed down within Greek life or sports groups, its hard to break into that area around Kimbark. Maybe I'm just jaded from living in cities most of my life, but I never felt really particularly unsafe in Hyde Park, Kenwood (where I lived for a year) or Woodlawn (where I also lived for a year).

Also, you can be confident I'm not just trying to defend UChicago or Pritzker, they rejected me right out the gate lol no love for someone who spent his youth in the BSLC. PM me if you want to discuss Hyde Park a little more or have questions about my experience.

Yeah I'm sure it depends, but if you find Woodlawn safe I would agree that you are either seasoned or just built differently lol. I'm from a pseudo-urban area with little crime. Regardless, I wouldn't want anyone going through what me and many of my peers have been going through, case and point.

That’s fair, I’m sorry you’ve had such a difficult experience and I hope you’re able to enjoy the last year of college!
 
I added their school to my list this weekend as yet another unattainable reach school, lol how long do you think it'll take before I get a secondary if I get one at all?

Honestly no way to say. Some have been getting them relatively quickly while others, as you can see, not at all. And still others receive them after waiting more than a month. Good luck!

Just got my secondary (verified 7/19, so there's still hope for those of you who haven't received one yet)! UCSF is one of my top choices, and I was so scared I had been screened out! Happy birthday to meeeee!

Ended up submitting secondary after reading man in the arena speech

who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
 
Do you think that you will be penalized if you do not write anything for the activities' secondary questions? I do not want UCSF to think I am not interested and just clicked through the secondary but I do not have significant updates to my activities.

Probably not but i think in a process where they are blinding the MCAT, it doesn't hurt to expand upon an activity or two to make yourself stand out

So, in the eyes of UCSF, you have a 3.81 and no red flags. Also, someone already mentioned on here that last year they didn't get a secondary until September and still got accepted.
 
They aren’t looking at MCAT and I would assume that 3.81 is below 25th percentile for UCSF. Not sure though

MSAR says 25th percentile is 3.72 with median of 3.86. @doglova is perfectly fine from a stats perspective, and we know UCSF takes its sweet time on sending secondaries.

No need to sow anxiety by speculating whether there's a stats cutoff for this school given anecdotes of people receiving secondaries late in the cycle and still getting the A.
 
I am so burnt out on secondaries yet I am still dying for a UCSF secondary. 🙂

I was literally just telling myself I was clearly not getting one and I finally got a secondary. Thank you UCSF gods.
 
when did u submit ur primary?
Mine was submitted the first day of transmission (6/25)! So do not give up hope my people! I know I’m saying that now when less than an hour ago I was feeling like “ALL IS LOST!” But it’s not!
 
Question, is anyone applying to PRIME-US/know some information about it. Tad bit confused. I know the UC PRIME programs are pretty much all 5 year dual degree programs. UCSF mentions in a FAQ question that:
PRIME-US students who complete an additional master’s degree or research year also receive an additional scholarship.
But in the general description, it implies it is already a 5 year program. So is the 5th year not required or is it? I love the PRIME programs and their missions but I’m still not sure about wanting to tackle an extra year.

Just received my secondary yesterday at 8 pm. I added UCSF towards the end of July, early August so I am not surprised
 
OOS and no secondary. Primary complete on 07/22. Losing hope
 
IS, verified 6/25, reapp, strong mission fit, still holding out for a secondary. dont forget about me ucsf 🥺
 
I just got a secondary this evening! Honored to still be in the running (for now lollll).

IS, LM 74, verified/submitted primary 7/27.
