Is it okay to email and ask about a rejection (i.e. what I can improve)? I'm pretty much resigned to the fact nobody will take me and I'm slightly agitated at this point. Why interview me if I'm so terrible?

You’re definitely not terrible if you were able to interview. I say go ahead and email, the worst they could say is no. Keep your head up!

Hey you guys! I submitted my secondary 12/16 (I know I’m so late ) and I just got the email that it was received and reviewed. Does this process usually take a long time or is it a good sign that it took about a month (I know on the medial it said it could take 6-8 weeks and then additional 4 weeks for anyone that submitted it November and after).

This whole process with all med schools is a roll of a dice and depends on so many variables.

It is unfair. Some people like myself are not creative or eloquent writers. Some people like myself just want to help people but it is considered cliche.

It is an unfair process but those are the cards we have to deal with.

Im sure you will become a doctor

Is it true that international students admitted to Howard have 515+?

Anyone have any stories of submitting relatively in the cycle but still not receiving an interview. I know HBCU cycles are a bit wonky and you can't pinpoint a specific time/date and I also know that silence is better than a rejection, but I'm just curious

I’m sure there are many stories like that sine Howard got about 8000 apps this year.
I think Howard send Rs at the end of the cycle but in the meantime, anything can happen.

Submitted first week August but I know people who submitted earlier

Complete end of July and its been silence since I received the "application has been reviewed" email (in august). 🙁

you can send more than one update letter?? I hope they wont be pissed, like who is this desperate person
Yes, I really want to get into medical school, and no I do not have the best academic profile, so yes I have been trying my best to find new things to add to my profile to make me stand out even after submitting my application. If you haven't, that's okay. I sent one letter featuring new extracurriculars/activities and one regarding an upcoming publication I am an author for, so both entirely different.

Excuse me? Where do you get off passing such judgments on other applicants and calling them desperate in public forums? Yes, I really want to get into medical school, and no I do not have the best academic profile, so yes I have been trying my best to find new things to add to my profile to make me stand out even after submitting my application. If you haven't, that's okay, but do NOT shame others for having multiple updates to send. FYI, I sent one letter featuring new extracurriculars/activities and one regarding an upcoming publication I am an author for, so both entirely different.
I am not judging you, I was referring to myself. I was saying, I hope they won't see me as too desperate. I was just concerned about how adcoms would view multiple update letters cos I wanted to send in another one. I'm sorry for how I worded it.

This is the issue with typing. When people can’t see or hear you they interpret your words differently than you may have intended. I knew exactly what you meant when I first read your post, but I re-read it and I was like oh the person probably read it as you speaking directly to her. It’s all good guys.

Off to write an update letter…

If it's a mistake I'll take back what I said and apologize for the misinterpretation, but yikes that was phrased so poorly.

Homie, we don't tear others down idgaf. Best advice you could have given @TiramisuLover99 was to not send updates too frequently if the updates aren't significant for their application. The "desperation" part of your comment is rude at best considering most applicants are killing themselves for a chance to become a physician.

I think the poster was thinking out loud and considering if HE would be considered desperate, not the original poster. I only say that because when I read TiramisuLover99 post my first thought was oh wow I didn’t know we could do that, I thought it would make me look desperate. I’ve never got this far in the med school application process and don’t have family members who can provide me insight on how it works so I’m not privy to how update letters, letters of interest, etc. work. I really don’t think he meant anything negative at all. Sometimes it’s difficult to communicate properly on this platform.

And hence the issue with judging applicants based on how effectively and creatively they can write essays.

This process is unfair and rewards story telling (putting aside grades, mcat and ECs which most have).

I may type unemotionally but hear me out Adcom; I have had an extremely tough life and personally know the impact of adversity on the health of poor people.

It is what it is.

Sent my secondary in a while ago... got the complete email and still nothing.. but I think the HBCUs usually interview/accept a bit later into the cycle ?

Does someone know if the interviews are open stats? Like will those interviewing have our stats.. I'm trying to prepare for any possible scary questions about my MCAT.. because I know it's on the low side. Thanks in advance!

Hey! So the interview is open everything but they do not bring up your stats during it in my experience. It was very relaxed, but they definitely know about your background and will ask questions based on your applications. If anything they will ask about any extenuating circumstances that lead to poor grades.

I couldn't find an answer to this in any of the emails they sent out but I remember my interviewer mentioning he had access to my entire application packet. But, they didn't even bring up my test scores/course grades. I don't have an amazing MCAT score either so don't feel discouraged, they already have an interest in you. You got this! 🙂

thank you, beautiful people. I can't tell you how nervous I am. But I really am wishing the best for all of you... pray for me, wish me luck whatever, I could really use it.

I got accepted with 514 so no. But my GPA is nigh perfect (3.98) so take that with many grains of salt.
I’m international and accepted too hope we see each other. but yeah I don’t think it’s MCAT based tbh
