2022-2023 UT Tyler

Right. The people standing at the stations wont be same for all interviews and there is no uniform judging of MMI where there is a correct answer that every different judge can give you a specific grade on. They are judging you on your thought process and content, not the correctness. MMI is very judgemental, open to the whims of whoever is assigned to your stations and not the best way to select candidates with just that process and nothing else but that seems to how a few schools in Texas want to run their interviews.

I think as a first time school they may take other things into account besides just the interview especially with the MMI process subject to judgment/bias like you said. They really have emphasized their holistic approach in admissions thus far and I could see that continuing onwards into the final admissions decisions. I remember they said they were ranking students into quartiles/groups for interview decisions, so maybe they’ll take a look at that for admissions too. But of course there’s no way to tell! Guess we will have to wait and see!

I would think that a few questions stay the same. Do you know if they were all different?
Yes- My friend was telling me about their interview yesterday and they referenced that xyz question was hard, which wasn't one I had. All of theirs were different than mine but definitely same themes.

Really sad to read that most of the IIs for this cycle have been given out. I'm happy for y'all, but I really fell in love with their program and was hoping they could see my genuine interest and passion from my secondary. For those of you who are ultimately accepted, I lived in Tyler for a few years and would be happy to answer any questions about the area. Best of luck to all of you!
Why you think this is the case ?

What's important to know about Tyler, and whats the best gym?

Johnson the “hopeful”. Try to be more hopeful haha. There will still be more opportunities. Don’t give up this early.
Not sure this is correct. Please read posts on September 13th where it was mentioned that interview dates were available from November 19th all the way into January.
Yes, I think there's also a possibility they'll open up more spots. From what I've gathered from them it appears they definitely are still interested in interviewing more applicants.

Hi y'all! My apologies. Turns out I misread someone's comment a few pages back on this thread about how many interview spots were available and didn't see the more recent comments about more dates. Doesn't mean I'll get an II here necessarily, but I am back to being hopeful!

Re: Tyler and the gym, I don't know, because I just went to the gym on campus or walked/ran at Rose Rudman Park. But what's important to know about Tyler is that it's pretty big in terms of geographical area but pretty tight-knit and supportive in community, it's growing quickly, full of friendly folks, overall pretty conservative, and surrounded by nature. Coming from a bigger city, I found living there really peaceful.

When you say conservative in what sense?

Best gym is Crunch if you're looking for a commercial gym, otherwise F.I.T. or F45!

Definitely politically. Tyler basically refused to enforce masks or a lockdown in 2020. I worked in healthcare here during the pandemic and it was horrific lol.

The mask enforcement and lockdown may not have lasted as long compared to other states, but Tyler did have a stay at home mandate with all schools, both public and private, churches, and many businesses moving to an online format for the duration of 2020 and both big hospital systems still require masks during any patient encounters

From what I recall, we had a two week lockdown and they didn't enforce much after that other than schools and hospitals. Mask enforcement never happened as a government though, it was businesses who had to be the bad guy. We had clubs throwing COVID parties and Times Square had that "not enforcing masks" banner on their website throughout the pandemic. I remember going to Dallas/Austin and being shocked at how stringent they were, in a good way haha. Maybe my memory is just more focused on the worst of it because I was on the healthcare end.

Ok but if you personally chose to wear mask yourself did people mind their own business?
Or were you targeted for wearing mask?

Definitely got dirty looks lol, nothing awful. My concern wasn't ever being targeted, but we have a very high average age and lots of vulnerable people in our communities! But that’s one of many reasons we needed the med school so badly. Lots of misinformation in our community that we need more community engagement to help with!

I would assume they want to meet their institutional mission of recruiting people with local affiliation who will stay around and serve east texas once they are trained physicians.

they said they’ll be very prematch heavy on my interview day- starting in december
That doesn’t seem like it’d make sense. As a new medical school, if they go over 40 students that could be catastrophic. I’d figure they would be conservative until match day. Still tho I guess it’s nice to hear there’s a higher chance we could hear back before March

Maybe they are planning to send a lot of rejections in December too and narrow the pool a lot. It's confusing because the interview dates in January. It doesn't really make sense how they will be pre-match-heavy if they still considering new applicants until late January.

Edit: Not doubting the information here, but not understanding the logic behind it

I doubt they’d reject applicants, since then they run the risk of not even filling their class all the way. If they interviewing less than 200 applicants I’d imagine everyone will just be on the waitlist that aren’t accepted until May/June.

But yeah I’m not doubting the info either, I just find it interesting that’s their approach

Does anyone who interviewed have the school listed in rank preference yet? Interviewed on 9/8 and it’s still not listed.

II this morning 🙂
First of all, congrats! And I hate to be a bother, but did it look like there were still open interview spots before January when you scheduled? Just trying to get an idea of how full up the slots are at this point. Thanks! Enjoy your interview day!👍

Found this site by recommendation of a friend and there is so much valuable info here. I got my secondary on 8/26 and submitted on 9/12. Received II on 9/15. Try your best to not get discouraged and keep an open mind, good luck all!
When was your casper ? and would you share your quartile ? Thank you.

When everyone is getting excited for October 15- meanwhile we have to wait until December 😢

Is that when UTT said they will begin sending acceptances?
Yes, since this is their first year taking in students and they got a late start receiving applications, they said that they will not be making any pre-match offers until December.
So - don't feel disappointed when you don't hear anything from UT Tyler in October 🙂

It looks like you're from the west coast. Are you a texas resident?

They'll be able to take a maximum of 4 OOS students.
I wonder if there In state applicants who have not received their secondaries, am sure all OOS have been sent by now if any.

Heard where?
yes, they’re being selective. i have a few friends who didn’t get a secondary. a few comments back someone got it who submitted in june.

i wouldn’t be surprised if they took 100% IS. mission is very close to this school- any OOS student will likely be from this area originally.

Additionally, they openly mention that they favor applicants from East Texas or with strong ETX ties. I think there’s a map on their webpage which shades in the counties they consider part of ETX as well as the ones they consider “ETX adjacent”.

Yes and I believe the county list is somewhat strict. I consider my county ETX adjacent but on the map they have, my county isn't listed despite the fact I'm only a 1 county separation from Rockwall (at least if I'm reading the maps right). So I used my secondary to discuss the ties I have since I'm not by their standards adjacent to ETX. My residence is like 30 mins outside of Dallas and kinda close to DFW airport for reference.

The DFW area is not ETX adjacent.

Yeah there's some hard lines in the sand that I did not know about. I was born in Jersey so there's no hard lines that this is north, south or central. Everyone in that state just guesses. I realize now that just looking dead on at a map to determine what is and isn't ETX is not the way. Even in my high school, UTT would visit on local college days for senior recruitment, but what can ya do? It was not intuitive to me haha So just in case anyone is like me and still is learning TX nuances.

Every single person on my interview day was from Smith County! I was the first day so it may be skewed because I assume the first set of interviews went to locals that met stats and mission, but they have a ton of emphasis on that.

I know the dean said there will be an east texas focus, but I know a lot of folks from Houston who got interview invites!
