2023-2024 Pittsburgh

Did anyone have trouble completing the "Additional Details" page of the secondary? For some reason it is the only portion in which clicking "save" or "save and continue" doesn't save my responses. Not sure why this won't go through despite all of the fields being filled!
Check the submission page— it will tell you which parts of it actually didn’t save. For me, it looked blank, but I just needed to do #7 and #8. When I filled in ONLY those two and hit save, it fixed it… I have a feeling it’s because of the weird disappearing SSN they tried to do

thanks so much, i think that fixed it!

Are those clinical or basic science? How many are 1st author?
They were a mix with mostly clinical and one that was for an environmental science journal (I did a minor in bioinformatics in undergrad and that data from the peer-reviewed paper was also published in a PhD dissertation, not my own). Two were first author and had to do with my master's thesis, others were part of a big study that we did with the NIH.

I heard pitt heavily favors their undergrads- is this true?
I honestly have no idea. I have heard both sides of this. I was talking to a Pitt grad physician the other day, and she said the school favors non-Pitt undergrads. Then again, this physician graduated several years ago so I don't know how much it has changed.

Anyone else submit their secondary on 7/15 and not hear anything?

Also, how many information sessions did you all sign up for? I work FT so I’m not sure I can make all 9…

Thank you for your help! What are some things that you think helped you stand out in ur app/interview? What would be some good ways to prepare specifically for this school interview?

Any tips on interviewing here? This is one of my top choices so I would love to try and prepare as much as I can.
I interviewed last year and there were three parts to it. There was an interview with a physician, student, and a team/group activity. The physician and student interviews were very standard. Prepare for the basic questions like why pitt, why med, tell me about yourself, tell me about your activities. For the team/group activity you are presented with some scenario and asked to provide insights. Make sure to speak enough, but don't try to dominate the conversation. Don't speak just for the sake of speaking, but really try to make a unique point or even ask a unique question about the sample scenario.

For the student and physician interviews, I tried connecting with the interviewers at a personal level. Ask the interviewers some questions to gauge their interests and passions. For example, my interviewer mentioned they like F1 so I talked about how I also spend my free time watching the races. It could be anything but it leaves a good impression if you the interview conversational and personal.

How is living in Pittsburgh as a city? any cool spots worth checking out
I'm loving it so far. The winters can get rough depending on what you are used to. One of my favorite spots is the Mount Washington overlook. You can grab ice cream and get a nice panoramic view of the city. Its especially beautiful in the night. Theres also lot of cool cafes, bars, and restaurants. The public transportation is also solid. You can catch a bus every 10-15 mins from most bus stops.

Mount Washington (have to do incline at least once..)
The botanical garden
Andy Warhol museum
Kennywood!!!
Schenley Park is rly nice
Pitts very own cathedral of learning-nationality rooms

Restaurants:

Arrepitas (Authentic Venezuelan arepas, soo good)

Everyday Noodles (vegan and vegetarian options @toastedbutter)

Noodlehead (just go it’s phenomenal, also vegetarian options)

Grand Concourse (a little pricey but rly cool atmosphere)

So many more I love pgh 🥹

Anyone familiar with the vegan/vegetarian food scene in Pittsburgh? Anything decent there lol
The closest ones to campus are EatUnique, Roots Natural Kitchen, EGE Mediterranean, and Prince of India. The farthest one is EatUnique and even that one is still only a 0.9 mile away from the main building. Many many more options available downtown, just maybe not (short) walking distance!

On MSAR, it looks like tuition is $2000 higher for OOS than IS ($64,798 vs $62,416). Is there a reason for this?

Do many students live in university housing? Is it nice/in a nice area?

Under the Residency/Reduced Tuition header, it says that "Students who reside in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania may be eligible for reduced tuition through state appropriations." This is likely the explanation, although this page is not from their school of medicine webpage.

Do you think it's worth going to visit Pitt before my interview? I've never been to Pittsburgh before (live around 10 hours away by train), and I'm worried I'll have nothing to say if an interviewer asks me "why Pittsburgh?" (the city)

I went to Pitt for undergrad and it is very safe in my opinion. I routinely was outside on the streets of Oakland walking back from the library at 2 am with no bother. Now this doesn't mean just wander around in the middle of the night, but overall, Oakland is a very safe place from my experience.

Did you guys receive a secondary completion email? I completed my secondary but I never got an email..
