2023-2024 Rutgers (New Jersey)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
if I submitted my secondary 7/27 and still have not heard anything should I be worried, accept my fate lol

You think he’s done with ED calls? There’s been silence the past few days
I hope it’s just silence in this thread. Not everyone that applies is on SDN/comments.

That being said, it’s definitely our turn to get a decision. If we’re getting deferred, shouldn’t we have heard much earlier? The NJMS site says that “ED applicants are notified immediately if deferred”.

So I got an "Out of Office" email from Dr. Heinrich over a week ago through 8/28, so don't stress if you haven't heard back just yet.

My interviewer mentioned a couple of things too. First was that they personally aim to submit the interview evaluations to the committee within 48 hours post-interview (they made it sound like this wasn't necessarily standard). So the timeline could vary based on how quick your interviewer is with that. Second, they said the admissions committee usually meets once a week, typically on Thursdays or Fridays. They said the real countdown to hearing back starts once they've got your complete application, including that interview feedback, and the committee has had a chance to meet. They said it was usually 2-2.5 weeks from that point, not just from the date of your interview. If you interviewed on a Wed-Fri, for example, there's a chance an extra week could be added to the timing if the interviewer wasn't able to submit the evaluation before the committee met that week. Keep in mind he said this applies just to the ED process though - takes much longer for RD.

Last, they warned that with vacation time due to Labor Day being around the corner and orientation kicking off for the new class, things might take a smidge longer than usual 🙂

Well that certainly makes me feel a bit better. Were you emailing Heinrich because you didn’t hear back post interview for awhile?

So I actually had my interview mid Aug due to some prior commitments that prevented me from scheduling earlier. I emailed him after the interview just as a quick follow-up to let him know how it went and to thank him for his feedback since I had contacted Dr. Heinrich earlier this year to talk about the ED process. He still responded that night lol, but I was hit with the auto "I'm away until 8/28" first.

I also know a couple of others who were interviewing for ED around that time too since they had new MCAT scores they were waiting on until their application could be reviewed. I believe that was the first week they opened it up to RD interviews. Let's hope that means the committee will be meeting more regularly now, and we all get some good news soon 🙂

Thank you for the info! Makes me wish i asked my ED interviewer more stuff about the process haha. Maybe calls will start up again today as he’s back!

Fingers crossed!! Considering they say they're pretty prompt with the deferred to RD emails and those don't depend on Dr. Heinrich's schedule, I've convinced myself that no news is good news for now. I'm giving myself a mental break until after Labor Day hah, then I may check in for an update.

Question for you and others who had 2nd interviews, how long did it take for your A to come in after the second interview? I had a second interview as well.
I have my second interview soon (ED) -- any tips or aspects I should be aware of?
My first was atypical in that it felt more like an application review than a standard interview. I also can't tell if my interviewer is a student or a doctor because I wasn't able to find someone with the name + correct education when I looked it up.

Hey guys! For those who have interviewed so far- were you told in advance or able to see who your interviewer was?

Congrats on the interview! More of a general tip, but the ED interview was framed to me as they've already assessed your application and believe you're prepared for the rigors of medical school. The goal is to show your personality, your communication skills and how you'll fit in their community, not so much prove to them why you deserve a spot. Be honest and have fun. If it's a tougher question or you feel yourself getting off track, you can always ask them to clarify, check-in and ask if what you said answers their question, and offer to elaborate on any aspect of what you've said.

I don't think who the interviewer is matters too much, in fact it may help the conversation to know less since you can come up with more genuine questions to ask about their background or what advice they have for incoming medical students at the end, but one suggestion is during your morning check-in, when they ask if you have any questions, ask if they have an email on file for you interviewer so that you can properly thank them for their time. I also know some students who interviewed with neither a student or a doctor - it could be really anyone on faculty at the medical school like clinical instructors, researchers etc, so could also be a nurse, phd, etc.

Last, if it's for ED, you could always reach out to one of the deans of admissions to reiterate your excitement for the opportunity and ask for their thoughts on what you can address further to strengthen your candidacy. They probably will have some good insight.

Thank you for the advice, but I want to clarify that this is my second interview for NJMS this cycle. My first was in July, and I received a second interview invite because "additional information is needed prior to rendering a decision on [my] candidacy to NJMS."

I don't know if NJMS does student interviews and if those would be different in any way from a physician doing the same. I don't believe there will be a check-in this time, but I already know the person's name, as they were also a recipient of the email.

Any advice for an RD interview? Has anyone had one yet? Not sure if it will be a different vibe from ED interviews

Yep! I think first or second interview, I'd approach it the same. I wouldn't read in to it too much - it could be as simple as it had little to do with you and more to do with the interviewer not writing enough detail on their evaluation or forgetting to write a blurb on what your hobbies are. Since it is a traditional, open file interview format, I think it is normal for them to have your AMCAS in front of them and walk through it/your background in a conversational manner. Whoever they are, they'll have reviewed it thoroughly before you meet and may have things noted that they find interesting or want to ask you about. Be prepared to talk about what you like to do outside of medicine, and what you're excited about.

I believe student interviews are based on availability and offered at the request of the interviewee, but it wasn't available when I interviewed, so I'd guess it's a faculty interviewer. I'd definitely use it as an opportunity to connect with Dr. Heinrich/Dean Rivero for feedback though if you haven't already.

From what I've heard, RD is exactly the same just minus why are you applying ED lol - super chill and enjoyable.

Btw did the interviewer tell you that they were prompt with their deferral to RD email? Or did you see it on their website like i did

That’s probably why you’re getting a second interview but I’d say it was pretty standard again. Mine was more focused on certain aspects of my app that they wanted to know more about, so maybe they felt your first interviewer didn’t capture the information they were looking for I’d guess.

Thanks to both of you; the fourth option (not being acceptance, deferral, or rejection) threw me off.
@aa1579 Any update on your status or idea of the timeframe you would know by?

My guess is as good as yours lol

hahah both! the interviewer did make a point to tell me that when talking about why ED at NJMS was such a nice option.

I had my RD interview already. It was very conversational and the interviewer was really cool and willing to give advice and answer a lot of questions. My interview didn't go the full hour and I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad sign but I thought it went well and the vibe was laid back!

That makes me feel so much better thank you!

Anyone know NJMS’s RD admissions timeline? How early do they start sending As and is it rolling?
