That's where I must have heard it from 🤣

Hello all, pretty new here. I was wondering since UTMB is pretty pre-match heavy (not pre-matching to this school) and that I just had my interview last week, would it be appropriate to write a letter of intent to this school (JSSOM's website states that they do in fact accept these). After the orientation and having had some friends graduate from the program and rave about it, I would love to be able to go here. Would that be alright and what would be a good time estimate to send it in by? Thanks a lot for the great information already on this thread too!
Remember a letter of intent is only sent to one school.
Please don't post the same question across multiple threads, I have removed a duplicate.

the associate dean mentioned during orientation that UTMB will not release prematches starting October 15th this year, but later in December. he mentioned they're implementing this change in the name of equity and giving equal weight to more interviews. didn't have much time to ask about it further
Thanks for sharing this update, I hope it will save UTMB lots of panicky calls from people wanting a pre-match offer!
Last year Long, Baylor, and UT Tyler waited until November and U of H Fertitta until December.

Thanks for sharing this! Does that mean early interviews don’t have an advantage?

Does this change anything for OOS interviews and acceptances?

It just means they will consider a larger pool for issuing first set of prematches.

If they issued 200 in October, 50 in November and 50 in December, they will issue 300 all in December.

That 300 number never made sense to me for october prematches. It would for a december date.

Been having a blast at interviews; wishing everyone a great rest of the interview cycle! (And no one has thankfully asked whether I'm on SDN 😅) Our current class was prematch heavy, but we do have a ton of folks who matched through the regular match, and many who got off the waitlist as late as mid-June! Remember, it's not over until it's over, you have a lot of time left in the cycle.

Are the prematches same as acceptance

A prematch offer is a true acceptance offer, yes
It is called a prematch for Texas residents since they are allowed to keep only one admission in TMDSAS when the match process happens in February whether they get 1 prematch or 8 prematches. Essentially Texas residents have a single Match and may be some waitlists once match is complete if they received prematches.

Hypothetical TMDSAS scenario

I interview with 3 schools A,B and C.

I don’t receive any prematch offers (either because the school is not prematch heavy or I wasn’t very high in their list).

I rank them as follows:

1. School A
2.School B
3. School C

I am accepted at school A and therefore match there. Do I ever know if I was accepted at schools B or C?

If you only match to C, you will be on waitlist for B and A until May 15th.
If you match to A you will never know if B and C also wanted you.

If you match to B you will be on waitlist for A.

You will not know this. If you Match to school A on Match Day that is what you will see on your TMDSAS portal.
If on the other hand you match at school B, you could be offered a WL spot at school A, and could possibly get in there between Match Day and May 15th.

So going with the hypothetical case that I match with School B and later offered a WL spot at school A, this is only an offer to go to school A correct ? In other words, I am not obligated to give up my acceptance at school B and accept the newly opened spot at school A ?

From past threads, if someone is on waitlist (not every school automatically puts you on waitlist btw - some schools reject some who interviewed while putting others on waitlist) for a specific school after the match and they have already matched elsewhere, they will be offered an admission they must accept or turn down. If they do accept, they need to go back to other school where they matched to let them know they are giving up their seat.

The schools where you are eligible to waitlist will actually ask you if you want to be on the waitlist.

Correct. You are never forced to take an offer from a WL and are free to accept it, or stay with your current school. If by then you are happy with plans for school B you can also take yourself off any WLs.

Would you guys recommend writing thank you emails to interviewers from MMIs even though the interview time slot is so short?

About how long does the actual day of the interview take? I’m trying to reserve a room so that I don’t have to take it in my dorm

If I recall correctly, my interview day lasted roughly a little over an hour (closer to an hour and a half). I would reserve 2 hours (or more) just in case. I also did my interview in my dorm room, and it was fine.

If I wanted to ask UTMB to use my excess biochem credits/waive the 1 deficient credit for my org. chem requirement, as they say on their website, is that something that I can do any time after I have interviewed, or would it be best to wait until after they've made a decision on my application?

Wait until you get an offer, that’s when they go over your courses in more detail

Just received this email to confirm this.

Anyone with the orientation this Friday (20th) receive additional information about the orientation/Interview? Wondering if I should reach out to them since I haven't received info yet and they said they will reach out to us 2-3 days before.

Could anyone who has interviewed already confirm if we are allowed to take notes on the prompt (like to jot down my thoughts on my laptop) before we answer the MMI question in the interview during the 3 minutes of prep? I assume so but just want to make sure!

I heard utmb was prematch heavy but to what extent? do they fill half their class with offers like utsw?
