2023-2024 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I heard utmb was prematch heavy but to what extent? do they fill half their class with offers like utsw?

I think they said they’re giving out 300 prematch offers this year and their total class size is 230. So I’m assuming they are expecting to lose a lot of prematches to other schools and then will match the remaining seats.

Just finished my MMI! Very nice students and faculty. No technical issues. Not too stressful except for one station that I read the prompt wrong and bombed. 😅 Felt good about the rest of the stations, I guess that's the beauty of MMI's!

As an OOS applicant, does anyone know when I should expect to hear back from them? Will my decision be released the same day as prematch offers go out or is there a different timeline for OOS?

UTMB admits OOS students but they are stingy with their IIs as well as controlling their admissions to ensure they meet the OOS limits. 2021 chart says they interviewed only 45, admitted 26 and only 7 enrolled. This is probably because they admitted highly qualified people who would have gotten into other Texas schools also where they got instate while UTMB does not offer automatic instate to OOS students like some other Texas schools do.

So far I've received an II from Baylor and McGovern but UTMB is also one of my top choices and I have yet to receive an II from their school. I was wondering if y'all thought it might be a good idea to send an update letter or letter of interest to schools I haven't heard back from. It seems like UTMB will only send out one more round of II.

Also I guess to avoid posting on multiple school threads should I send some kind of letter to all schools I haven't heard back from? I'm just feeling a little nervous because I felt like my interviews didn't go as well as I would have liked them to.

If this matters WARS 72, MCAT 517, 4.0 GPA, 900 hours EMT, no research

post on the texas thread!

From my experience having MUCH lower scores than you...I think UTMB values community service with underserved much more than it does high scores. If you have some volunteering you can address in your letter it might be worthwhile!

waitttt...only one more round of II-where are you getting that from bc damnnn

Is it true that people under 3rd quartile don't get IIs here - this guy from my community that goes here told me that at his interview last year they told all the interviewees that everyone here is 3rd or above and the rest get screened out
This is 100% false haha, I know people with 1st quartile Casper scores that got IIs here

I see 15 more interview days with 4 more orientation days this year, so I assume its speculation from the previous tracker @wysdoc posted last year. Remember, SDN is a very small sample size and not everyone from each wave will post! Also patterns won't match each year. Still a long way to go yall

UTMB interviews over 1000 people. Which quartile did you mean, MCAT, GPA, or CASPer?

I have my MMI today, but I am nervous about the lighting in my apartment. There is no good light. If there was a little bit of a shadow on my face would that lose me points on each station?

Tbh I don’t think you’d lose points for something like that. They seemed really kind and focused more on what you had to say and the actual content of your answers. Try to salvage the best lighting you can but if there’s a bit of a shadow on your face, I don’t see how you’d lose points over that. Just make sure you are clearly visible in the frame at all times. Good luck 🙂

Hey! I'm in the same boat here. I've had II from Baylor and UTSW, but I haven't heard back from McGovern + UTMB and they're also my top choices. I'm starting to lose hope for UTMB because I think I bombed their one-way interview and my Casper wasn't great (2nd quartile) 😢😢

Don't lose hope just yet! I completely bombed the SOWVI and had a 1Q Casper but still got the II

Not true. I have both MD and MD/PhD interviews here as an OOS applicant with a 2nd quartile on Casper.

Just finished my interview here! Maybe other people have the same experience but many of my interviewers were so dry and non-conversational 😥😥 I'm sure I did fine but I was expecting it to go a little bit different 🙁
I had the same experience. I don’t hold it much against them because it’s MMI, but after hearing how happy and cheerful everyone is, I was disappointed.

Some of my interviewers were dry but others were more conversational. I think MMI just tends to be dry since the interviewers need an answer quickly in the limited time they have.

I just finished mine and I thought they were okay as far as not too conversational but not too dry?! I think they just have to note your repsonses and its such a short time. They were all very nice tho. One said they liked my responses and I was like 🤩 praying for this school's acceptance so much lol

Right, but for the "sell-yourself" station I'd hate to repeat something they just read.
Selling yourself does not involve anything in your app. It is an elevator pitch (not sure how many minutes you get) but it should be about what will make you a great addition to the school, your future classmates, what qualities and attributes that dont come across in your app that you want to mention.

It should go like this:
1. I love people
2. I love serving people
3. I volunteered a zillion hours serving people at all these places.
4. i want to cure cancer
5. I did so much research my mentor kicked me out of the lab and asked me not to come back for a couple of weeks so I can have a life.
6. I am a great team member. people would never start a meeting if i am a bit late because they want my participation. they like having me around because I bring energy.
7. I am a great mentor. I mentored kids in middle school/high school/college and I like helping people reach their goals. when i get to MS2 I will start helping MS1.
8. I am a natural leader. i am going to run for student body something.
9. i love policy. i want to represent the school at all these national committees.

There was an UPS commercial - what can brown do for you.

if you heard from baylor and UTSW i dont think you need to be worried abt mcgovern or utmb my guy, I've heard from both the latter but not a word form the prior haha, I'd love to switch positions with you rn

My personal opinion is that UTMB and UTH are ghosting some people with high stats. The logic in that is that they offer you an interview after prematches to see if you still want to attend an interview if you already had a prematch from one of the top schools. That way they save interview spots for others more likely to come.

I, and a ton of other high stat people got interview invites from UTMB very early in the cycle. Not sure if they yield protect using stats.

Just hard to figure out. II from Baylor, utsw, uth and utlong.
I think UTMB also weighs strong ties. Their secondary has a question that I think is meant for individuals with strong ties to the school and the region. But I am not sure about this.

I think a lot of it is mission fit too, some schools look first for fit and alignment to mission as a fairly significant component. I know people with high stats who got interviews from UTMB and UTH as well as top tier schools like Baylor and UTSW. I am sure there is a slight yield protection but I don't think it is significant. I think the process is random, competitive, and unpredictable and does not always make logical sense to us. I wish everyone the best of luck and just know the cycle is not nearly over yet and I trust everyone will end up where they belong 🙂)

Ugh I hope there is no regional tie bias like wanting ppl from Galveston

From what I have heard (and this could be completely wrong or not true), UTMB is interested in recruiting some students from Galveston County. Once again, I'm not sure if this rumor is true at all.

+ 1 low stats and filled out that “especially interested in UTMB secondary” (I had immediate family graduate from there)

I filled that question out as well because I have pretty strong ties.

We do not evaluate your surroundings unless it's a huge red flag (like, idk, taking your interview while riding the subway or something, or your girlfriend is hovering in the background the entire time, or you're wearing a casual t-shirt).

As an interviewer, it feels really dry on our end too! I would love to have more time to converse but once we get through the MMI station there's like 30 seconds left 😫 So I wouldn't worry too much about how conversational it seemed and focus on answering the MMI prompt well, since that's how we're evaluating you!

Not to ask for your sources, but did this come from another student or faculty which are adjacent to JSSOM? Just curious.

That’s good to know! Gives me some relief that it’s the same feeling for you guys.
