Hi,

I've gotten acceptance offers from Case Western and Cincinnati for the incoming fall 2009 class. It's a tough choice for me. I've talked with many people, mostly doctors, for advice on which school to attend. The people who recommend Case all say that it has a better reputation than Cincinnati does. I see that's true from most rankings lists, but from what I've read, Cincinnati is moving up from it's already good ranking. Right now, I'm leaning a bit toward Cincinnati. I've interviewed at four schools now, and the only thing at any school that made me say "Wow!" was the new CARE/Crawley building at Cincinnati. I think its facilities and ambience would make a great setting for studying medicine. Case, of course, has a reputation that precedes it. I got the sense that I might get more clinical work opportunities at Case. I'd be most grateful for any advice on Case, Cincinnati, and how to choose medical schools in general. Thanks,

Reputation and ranking should be of little importance to you; you'll get a great education at both schools, and your performance as a medical student will be far more influential in terms of your future options. Given that you were far more impressed with Cincinnati, however, that already seems like the natural choice.

There are other factors you should take into account before making your final decision, of course, such as the costs, the weekly schedules (IE: CWRU starts very early in the year), the differences between the two cities, etc... The goal is to find the school at which you'd be happiest/best able to be successful. In any case, don't get too caught up in the ranking, for while I'm sure you'd thrive at either school, it seems silly to turn down the school that you would like more just because of a subjective ranking.

Those who should pay more attention to ranking (but still not to the extent of it being the only determining factor) are those who are interested in research or academic medicine.

Case Western, hands down, absolutely, no question. The ranking is incredibly important, and you'll be able to get a much more prestigious residency coming from Case.

Full disclosure statement: I'm waitlisted at Cincinnati.

Case's med school facilities seemed relatively underwhelming... that said, assuming their relationship is all better, case students do rotate and do a lot of research at CCF, which is pretty amazing.

I would go with Cinci! I got accepted there as well and was very impressed with the facilities and the people I met. The city is decent and they have a great reputation in certain specialties. You can get into a great residency from cinci as long as you are a good student! I would pick the place you feel most comfortable, think you'll be happiest in 4 years of hell, and doesn't cost a lot more than the other options! Just my 2 pennies

Hi, Greonis,

Thanks for the excellent advice. The other important factor in my decision will be the curricula. Cincinnati has traditional lectures, while Case has very few lectures and mostly small group problem based learning. Case's small group curriculum is fairly new. I think this year's graduating class is the first that started with this curriculum. Do residency programs consider a lecture-based vs. problem-based medical school education in their selections? Thanks,

Did you also apply to Case?

Hi,

It looks like you chose Ohio State. I also interviewed at Ohio State. I haven't heard a decision from them yet. What were the factors that led you to Ohio State over Cincinnati? Thanks,

Hi,

Chosen mostly for personal reasons. Did my undergrad there and really like the school as a whole (the rest of the university has a lot of great facilities for working out/research/relaxing). I really like the city of Columbus a bit better than Cinci (lived an hour from each my whole life). I already know a lot of people that will be in my class, and my girlfriend is going to school in Columbus as well.

I have to say though from a medical school stand point Cinci wowed me more than OSU in the interview. The facilities are great and I like that anatomy is stretched out through the entire year instead of crammed into the beginning (the one thing I'm really not looking forward to at OSU). Also OSU was just a little bit cheaper, though not by enough to make much of a difference.

Hope this helps!😀

Great,

This is very helpful advice. One nice thing about Ohio State is that the cadaver lab has windows to the outside. Really lowers the creepiness quotient. Good luck,

Both schools are great and you really can't make a "wrong" choice here.
I would go with the school that is cheaper.

Haha agreed. Natural Light+Ventilation=nicer anatomy lab!

You cant go to CInci. They didnt even make the NIT.

Sounds like you've already decided on OSU, but I just wanted to tell you that you should be looking forward to cramming it all in! I just finished an SMP year at G-town, and here they spread it througout the first year and I constantly wished I could have just focused on anatomy instead of trying to juggle that with the ton of other information you are having to learn. I think that by going to OSU you will know anatomy better because you'll have the chance to really focus on it!

Just my 2 cents having gone through it spread out 🙂

As far as Cinci vs Case, I second the people who say rather to go with your gut. I think personally, I probably would have gone with Case. But I didn't even get an interview there 🙁, but I was waitlisted at Cinci so the choice is easy for me, haha Either way though, I'd really focus on what would make you happy!! What is the cost difference over 4 years?

Go to the one that is going to give you the most connections for getting into the residency of your choice. I am from cleveland and the city although poor has a lot to offer. You may not have been super impressed with Case's facilities or for whatever reason, but keep n mind you have to great hospital the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals to draw knowledge from.

GO TO CASE!
