Hello all!

I am starting my M1 in July in Michigan and I wanted to reach out and see and what people were predicting for how the cards will fall for this coming year and COVID? I completely understand that most classes can be held online, but to start school without any orientation or in-person learning or meeting my peers seems .... like an unfocused start? I feel like if I was going to be an M2 or even second semester M1 I would have a baseline of what to expect, but as of now, it all feels a little untethered.

I know it's difficult to predict the future, but I was wondering if anyone had heard any rumors from their medical schools.....I heard from many Boston undergraduate universities are preparing for an online fall semester.

Thanks in advance!

My prediction is that the quarantine will phase out in mid-may but this virus will last until we either find a vaccine or develop herd immunity. I don't think it is feasible to continue with isolation because our economy is tanking and people are growing irritable as is with limited human interaction and activities to do. So yes, I believe school will start as planned.

I think a lot of schools have no idea either. I know my school is still focusing on optimizing our remote learning and wrapping up the admissions cycle and other internal things that need to happen like clerkship placements for next year etc. They probably want to wait until closer to summer to make any decisions since the situation can change significantly in the span of a week. Good luck tho no matter what happens I'm hope you have a great experience!

My guess is that the lockdown (especially in dense urban areas) will continue potentially until the end of MAY, with the way things are going right now. Cities have already begun to hit peak but the next challenge will be the shortage of PPE and equipment. Early lifting of lockdowns will have people running back out into society, and germ transmission will explode potentially leading to even more devastating consequences.

I do think that med schools are largely preparing to go online to some degree. Even if schools re-open this summer-I'm sure they are developing backup plans for if they need to start online, with no delay in matriculation.
