Would you be willing to update us on the number of paid deposits after December 15th? Even a rough estimate would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Anyone else notice the anatomy lab is in the basement level... hope they have a good circulation/ventilation system....lol.:d

As a LEED Gold building, the air in the anatomy lab will turn over completely at least 20 times per hour. 🙂

Good point... Of the 2 I've been in 1 was in the basement, and the other had no windows. They were both well ventilated. I spent a considerable amount of time in one of them. Also, it's like they always say, you get used to it. With new construction I'm confident that it will be; not to mention that I'm sure there are codes pertaining to chemical usage and ventilation.

Thank you Dr. Meows. I got my phone call today and I have been accepted! This is my first acceptance and second year of applying to DO schools. It is very exciting and I am ready for the Fall!

Saw an ad run last night on local TV about how MD Anderson Cancer Center has partnered with Community.... which as you know, is one of the systems for MU-COM. That could be interesting.

I'm hoping good! Since it's new, I doubt they know whether there may ever be research opportunties for MU-COM students.... that's just me daydreaming 😉

While we appreciate the question, we do not release those numbers officially. We can say that there will still be seats remaining in our class after the 12/14 seat deposit deadline.

Additional Info:
Until 2015, the match program is the same one we have now. In 2015, the plan is to have all residency programs, MD and DO come under the management of the ACGME—the MD umbrella organization that is responsible for all residencies. Consequently, there will be only one match, for everyone, through the ERAS application service.

While at MU-COM, there will be time in the clinical rotations during 3rd and 4th years for interview rotations at place where you may want to go for residency training. MU-COM strongly encourages our students to do this.

There is a cap on the number of residency training slots in the USA as per the 1997 balanced budget act. The Medicaid and Medicare service organization (CMS) that funds GME will not pay for more than the CAP. If a hospital or School wants to have more than the cap, there is a way to take positions from programs that do not fill and move them to programs who want to expand. This is done through a competitive process much like getting a grant, through the HRSA.

Community Health and St.Vincent have applied for extra positions through this process—and the new residencies can be in any specialty. Other than that, the programs have to find a way to fund increases themselves.

MU-COM understands and greatly appreciates your interest in GME. At this point, your best plan of action is to work hard, do well in school, get good letters of reference, do some scholarly activity while in medical school, and have a good interview rotation where you work to impress the attendings.

Remember, our expectation is that our students be GREAT—not good—osteopathic physicians!! We will do everything possible to help you.

Just got an ii here and I'm super excited for it. Love the community involvement with this school. I've gotten a wealth of knowledge from this thread and the website but one thing I wasn't able to find, and admittedly I may have missed it somewhere, what is the design of the curriculum? I'm sure this school has looked at the different ways schools teach and I'm hoping they've really nailed it like they seem to have nailed several other aspects to develop great physicians.

The curriculum is systems-based; there is more detailed information in the Advantages tab that you have access to once you are accepted. I'm sure they'll give you all the up-to-date information they have at your interview. Congrats, and good luck!

I received this email today, but I don't understand what that means for our class. Does this mean that the new residency application process will be in full swing by the time we reach that stage?

Also, I really want to go to Marian, but my advisors are encouraging me to attend "more prestigious/ well established schools." They tell me it will be better for me in the long run when I'm applying for residency. Is this true? When I apply for residency, will it make a difference if I am a DO or MD? Is the prestige/history of the school taken into consideration? What is required of ambitious medical students who are seeking competitive residencies in the future, and how will MU-COM help make that happen?

Sorry for the loaded questions. I'm under some pressure to go elsewhere, but I feel tied to Marian. I want to make sure I'm making the right decision and for the right reasons.

Just two short tips:

For SDN- these general questions are meant for the general forum, not school specific. MD vs DO is discussed often, so you can find plenty of info just by searching. Also, google is your friend.

For life- unless you are just trolling (dean of a mid tier MD school trying to scalp MU-COM students?? 😉 ) then you should realize that your question was either rude or ignorant. Asking a school if you should attend there, or somewhere "more prestigious?"...yikes. "Prestige", even if it could be quantified in medical school, is pretty subjective or at best nebulous.

There are positives and negatives to both DO and MD, both old and new schools. It's your job as an "ambitious medical students who [is] seeking competitive residencies" to research these...then you can come with a thoughtful, school specific, question.

Now, MU-COM is so nice that they would probably tell me not to have called you out, but I just wanted to keep some order here in this thread and maybe even help you out along the way.

If you read this thread, you'll see that a handful of us are also deciding between schools (some being more established than MU-COM) so feel free to PM me, and them, if you want personal help in your journey.

Attend where you will be happiest. Figure out what your criteria are for what will make you happiest in med school, because this is going to be four hard years of your life, your name on the loans, your future as a physician. You can get whatever residency you want as long as you follow the advice MU-COM gave on here: work hard, pass the boards, get in some scholarly activity, and ace your audition rotations. Your advisors can say whatever they want but this is your life, so it's your decision. MU-COM is going to be amazing so if that's where you want to be, then go here if you are offered admission.
 
For those of you who have already interviewed, I saw that the two deans were the interviewers. Is that still the case for those of you who have interviewed more recently?

Also I know the mini interviews have a closed file format but what about the 20 minute interview? Will they have my application?

That's a good question...I interviewed in a Saturday, so we had physician from the community interviewing, which was enjoyable. But, that was a while ago now, so it may have changed...

Maybe some of those recently interviewed will have some input.

They do have your file for the interview, but the feeling is that your stats have already passed the test, so just know your story (activities, motivations etc)

I had a professor and a DO that commuted 3 hrs to interview us so I think it varies! As for my knowledge, all interviews (10 and 20 min sessions) had my name, undergraduate institution and degrees. Good luck!

So excited to interview here.....20 days! Are there clinics close by where med students can volunteer? Also, will lectures be available to students online?

I had two deans, but I was on a Friday back in October. They will only see your undergrad work, so I had to mention my graduate work, and I'm glad I talked about other parts of my app that they didn't have right in front of them.

Thank you for stating this! When I first read it, I will admit that I felt a slight bit of offense to the original post...just glad that we all understand the maturity level that it requires to be an excellent physician (MD or DO)!

Good luck! I'm excited for you! I absolutely loved this school so much, putting down my deposit on Monday yay! 😀

As I recall (and others, please do correct me), they are working on the availability of where we can volunteer. They did mention that there is a small campus medical clinic run by an NP, and that there is a possibility that we might be able to assist there (still in the process though, and I intereviewed in mid-Oct so things may have changed by then)

As far as the lectures are concerned, yes we will have access to ALL of the lectures online! So exciting! 😀 👍

IUSOM has a free student run clinic on the East side, I used to volunteer there, it would awesome to set up a similar clinic or be able to volunteer at theirs.

There are several MMI stations, only one which is the "double station" (twice as much time) will have your file.

They really don't...some could think that because they have your name, undergraduate institution, and degree--that's it! This question has been asked so many times, and I just interviewed there a couple weeks ago so unless they changed things :shrug:

It's closed file.... they told us at our interview that they only had our name, college attended, and degree. That's it. My 'double station' interviewer told me the same thing right before we got started. Unless they've changed things recently.
Either way the interviews were really laid back! Best advice: just relax and be yourself!

All of the interview stations have been--and will remain--closed files except for your name, undergraduate institution, and major.
