I am trying to decide between SLU and Temple. I am from California and I have heard that SLU has a decent reputation for matching its students back to Cali. I have also heard that there is a significant portion of the class (over 30 students) from California. From looking at MSAR and the school websites, SLU's academic stats GPA/MCAT are a bit higher. I have spoken with some SLU med students who seem happy with their experiences at SLU, but I am looking for more input.

On interview day, area aside, I have to say that I was impressed by everyone I met at Temple. They seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the school. I also note that Temple's class is about 50% from PA, whereas SLU's class is about 25% from Missouri. Temple also offers different in-state/out-of-state tuitions.

In addition to getting input regarding the strengths of both schools, I'm also interested in information regarding living for both SLU/Temple. Temple seems to be more of a challenge in terms of living because of its location, and also because it has more severe winter weather for commuting. Thanks.

You are in a great position! Getting to choose between two schools is a privilege, especially two good schools. These schools are very similar in terms of reputation and academics. I think you should make your choice based on cost, the area but most importantly: Your gut. The academic benefits to these two schools won't out weigh your gut. Even now you KNOW which one you want to go to. You will NOT Be shooting yourself in the foot academically to go to one over the other so feel free to make your choice.

For what it is worth, after being to both schools I'd choose SLU. While the area around SLU isn't that nice either, it is definitely nicer than Temple. I know many people first hand, (And I don't know that many) who have been held up on their way home from Temple. Also academically, SLU seems to be on the rise to me. They just finished a couple years ago that amazing research building which can only help their standing with other schools. Plus their hospital is really nice.

I vote SLU. Congratulations!

I didn't apply to either of these schools, so Im sure someone else can give you better advice. But I know a doc who went to WashU who says he would rather his primary care physician be from SLU than anywhere else. I think of SLU as a not-as-known-as-it-should-be solid school that trains people well. I think of Temple as one of the schools that hates everyone treating it like a safety.

Since this is past the May 15th deadline I know this is of no help to the OP so I'm just replying for future readers who actually use the "search" function.

I know of plenty of people who say the same about Temple. People who have ties to an institution, whether they were trained there or their PCP is from there, will usually lean towards that institution. My opinion of Temple is the same as your opinion of SLU. Temple has tons of great things that it's doing and the only two real reasons that people try to give it bad name are its location and its price tag. That being said, the education here is amazing...and if there's one thing that I'm 100% confident in, it's knowing that I will graduate as an excellent clinician who knows how to apply book knowledge to real life. But as the saying goes, opinions are like a-holes....everyone has one!

temple has just opened its brand new medical school building.

Plus their hospital is really nice.

one of the benefits ive heard repeatedly about temple is its proximity from its hospital... literally across the street. i know that doesnt say anything about the "niceness" of the hospital but im just saying it's convenient for temple med students

for future cases, consider which you might prefer:

Writhing around on the sidewalk in a pool of your own blood

OR

Writhing around on a slightly warmer sidewalk in a pool of your own blood with nelly possibly being the assailant
