University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an interview today too! I'm at work in the ED right now without my phone, but just checked my status and it changed to interview invitation =) Transmitted 7/3, complete with all LORs 8/10. Stats: 4.0 GPA, 29S MCAT, instate.

Hey Star,

I submitted my primary application on June 27th, and my secondary wasn't completed until July 22nd.

My stats are average at most. Overall is 3.89, science is 3.97. 30M MCAT, and average ECs.

Oh yeah real average :uhno: lol

Getting a little nervous about not having heard anything.... website says application is complete but I don't remember paying a fee for the secondary app... there wasn't a fee, right?

No. There was no secondary fee. Thank goodness!

Anyone with a lower MCAT get an interview? 24-28?

Why look at MCAT alone. 36 here and no invite. Obviously, MCAT and other numbers are not the major factor in securing an invite.

Sent via my crappy phone.

redoitall,

I know TCOM in particular really does look at the applicant as a whole. I've known people with higher MCAT scores not get admitted or interviewed, and the desire to be a DO does come into play too. Good luck though!

Hey guys, I haven’t taken all my prerequisites. Do you guys know if this will affect whether or not I get in invite for an interview?

Neither did I. Perhaps this partially explains why no invite.

Thanks vacattack. Not the end of the world if I don't interview but I sure would like to. At this point, given numbers and when I applied, I probably won't be invited.
Anyway enjoy everyone.

I loved TCOM. I have never really seen Fort Worth before even though I've lived in Texas all my life. The campus is beautiful, it's in the museum district of FW. There was like NO traffic (I'm currently living in Houston, so I was super appreciative of that). The students and faculty were all really nice.

My same thoughts!

I was raving about the no traffic too! LOL. I even drove around the Downtown area and it was so easy and stress free!
I live in DC 😡 so you can imagine.... sigh...

I love TCOM too! I hope they offer me an acceptance! :xf:

Any one with a 26 or close to that score an interview yet? I want to go to this school so bad!

Thank god, freaking people on this forum are redic saying things like, "my scores are average at best 3.8 spa and a 35 mcat." I honestly. Believe they just want people to stroke their egos

I finished my app recently. I have above average stats and still no invite 😕 I have seen the TCOM buildings a few times. I love that side of Fort Worth. It's very nice and upscale around TCOM. If you want culture, they have great museums literally steps away across the street. If you want to catch a football or baseball game, Arlington is only a short drive away. It's an incredible location. I have a friend in the PA program and she just loves the school!

+1

I received a B.S. in Business Administration in 2001 with a 2.634. I received a J.D. in 2005 with a 3.5573. From 1/2008 through 5/2010, I completed 34 hours of required sciences (except organic) along with cell biology, virology, histology, and microbiology, with a 4.0. I am married with three children. I have been practicing law since 2005, and have been an college adjunct instructor of Constitutional Law since 2008. I took the MCAT in 2010, having taken no organic, and scored a 20M. No extra-curricular, no shadowing, etc., due to obvious reasons (see above). Any thoughts on my chances?

As of now your chances look slim to none. Cbwilson, I think your old gpas may be overlooked due to your 4.0 in your prereqs and recent science courses. However, you really need to retake the Mcat. I think if you can get it up to about a 27 you'll be in good shape. Another good option you may want to consider is applying to the unt tcom masters in medical sciences. If you get in and do well, you'll have an excellent shot at tcom.

Interviewing here tomorrow!!! :xf:

So they have interview days on Thursday and Fridays?

My interview is on the 14th. Congrats to everyone who has got an interview though. So far I've gotten invited here and two MD schools, Paul L Foster and UTMB. Im still super excited to check out TCOM and I think its a great school.

Congrats to both of you!

It is unlikely that your application will pass the first reading, because of your low MCAT and lack of clinical exposure. But you can fix them easily. It is almost inevitable that your MCAT will go up after you take organic, and your application will have a good chance of success with volunteering and shadowing hours.

BTW I know several career changers with families, and they are doing very well.

as far as prereqs go, i still had stat, gen chem II, and both o chems to go when i got my interview. they just go through your file and make sure youre on track to finish them.

as far as measurable go, they make a huge point to say that they are only half the application. they really put a ton of stock into everything else. when i was talking with the assoc dean of admin going over my file what my actual chances were bc my gpa was low (3.35) she said that they really look for reasons to admit rather than eliminate, so my mcat (32) would probably make up for gpa

jp6285, have you interviewed already, or was your conversation with the associate dean an informal one?

Interviewed 7/31, even more evidence that they really look at the whole application considering at most schools the only people getting interviews were 3.6+ and 35+ that early. As part of the interview day they will go over your file with you.

Also there on 7/31, I can second all of the above ^^^

I really felt like the interviewers here were much more interested in my ECs and the intangibles than they've been at my other interviews (Tech, SA, UTMB). Having said that, I just don't see a 20 being anywhere near acceptable for them. Finish organic, kill that section the second time, and I think you're golden.

Iam kind've in the same boat as the lawyer...the only difference i've been an engineer for the past seven years. 2.9 ugpa and 3.75 pre reqs gpa. Took the mcat and also got a 20. Being that iam an engineer its ironic i scored way higher on biological sciences than physical sciences! 2yrs research 1000+ hrs community service but only about 100hrs health related. I applied this year cycle hoping for a miracle but ready to take mcat again and reapply next app cycle.

Did they seem interested at all in your Corps experience? I really don't see why they haven't extended me an invite here. I even had a DO letter!

My application status just changed from "Your application is under review" to "Your application has been reviewed". Any of you guys have this as well?

Aper, was that for the Baylor thread?

Mine still says, "Your application is under review."
When did you interview? I interviewed August 24th. OOS.

:scared:

Gotcha, mine still just says complete. Nothing about being reviewed. Good luck!

About military experience: There was an Iraq vet (medic) in our group. He said TCOM loves military - the president of TCOM was a USMC officer, and his predecessor was a prominent Army doctor (his bio here).

P.S. My interview went well, and I absolutely love the campus and the people I met. Good luck to everyone! 🙂

Yes, 8/2/2012

Mine says "This application is Complete" as well under academic institution/term section and "app has been reviewed" above that.

got this from last year's thread

Look at the previous posts but usually:
(remember we have heard of some exceptions but tcom doesnt usually reject in state applicants , unless your interview was horrible + im not 100% positive on the wording since im doin this from memory last year but i thought it went something like)

Prematch:
Congrats

Waitlisted:
Under Review or some kind of Reviewed

More than likely Rejection:
Your app has been reviewed + any decisions will be sent via us mail

this was late Nov - early Dec, so it was after prematch started going out. I'd assume nobody is getting "prematch" yet

Is anyone else having problems accessing the secondary application? I log into myHSC just fine but every time I try to get to the secondary application i get this error:

"This application has experienced an error. Access is not currently available."

Also, regarding the secondary questions, are they asking for 1000 characters max with spaces included or without? Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Just want to say I interviewed on Friday and it was really great. The interviewers were really friendly and the entire staff was very helpful. The Student Ambassadors were also great and answered all the questions anyone had. The school is really great, I seriously hope I get accepted here.

Just got a call from Caroline offering an interview on October 4th. I was complete on TMDSAS around 8/1 and completed the secondary a bit later, like 8/20.

31 MCAT balanced, 3.8 GPA, still missing OChem2 as far as prereqs go.

Spaces are included. Good luck.

Any OOSers catch some TCOM love? If so, mind sharing stats? I'm still waiting patiently. GL everyone.

I hope I get a phone call soon from them. They are a spectacular school.
