University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
63% chance of post interview offer is pretty good. I wonder how it compares to other schools

It varies from 35% (UTSW) to 70% (TAMU) - according to USNWR's 2012 in-state stats for Texas, anyway.

Thanks do you mind sharing the link or info for UTMB, Houston, and Paul L Foster?

Trying to calculate my chances of getting accepted this year :scared:

i don't see a disconnect. the above quoted stats published by usnwr dated 2012 agree with the stats for fall 2011 posted on the tcom website. so yes they're for the previous (fall 2011) matriculating class, not for the current (fall 2012) class.

Last year's Post-Interview stats for in-state applicants. (OOS are generally 10% or more lower):

Tech - N/R
Foster - N/R
UTMB - N/R
TAMU - 71%
UNT - 63%
UTHSCSA - 57%
Baylor - 47%
Houston - 43%
UTSW - 39%

TCOM is pretty good about keeping these stats up to date. The new stats are usually available on the website in September.

At this point, would it be appropriate to send a letter of intent?

I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I'm technically OOS but I have lived in Texas and I have very close Texas relatives, so I'm applying to TCOM and I'm hoping to get an interview. I know TCOM is a great school with a great reputation, but I also have heard that it's a hard school. My question is this: Is there a program to help the new students who need extra help so they don't flunk out? My guess is that TCOM must have some kind of program in place. Thanks for any response.

I'm holding off until mid October. I still feel we're pretty early in the application cycle, considering the actual deadline is October 1st.

Got the call from Caroline today! But I was in lab so I missed it. Will call back to schedule tomorrow!

congrats, care to share stats and transmitted dates

Sure I'll generalize a lil bit.

cGPA: low 3's
sGPA: mid 3's***
MCAT: 29Q

***non trad with non science degree, took a few sciences courses 6-7 years ago before switching. Last 40 hours since returning to pursue medicine have been much improved grade wise. I didn't apply till I got my MCAT, so that was probably Aug 30-Sept 1 or so.

there is a center that offers free support services to everyone. counseling, workshops, tutoring by upperclasmen who have taken and earned an a in the course. they're a great resource. yes i can confirm that tcom is a hard school, but there is help available and they don't just fail you out without giving you a couple of extra chances at remediation

Does TCOM pay these tutors or do they rely on unpaid volunteers? Also - if you don't mind - How do TCOM students socialize if they don't have much free time? What's the crime rate in the school area if I want to take a jog? Thanks a lot.

Would you mind letting us know whether you're IS or OOS? Thanks!

Yes, the tutors are paid - to give you tutoring for free. They are very good if you need them.

There is free time if you know how to manage your time. Students form study groups, join clubs, travel to conferences, go out after exams. There are charity and athletic events organized by various TCOM entities. The powder puff rivalries are an old tradition. The annnual Cowtown Marathon started by TCOM is currently the 3rd largest in Texas.

The crime rate here is probably minuscule. There is a police department, but I have never seen anything bad happen. It's perfectly safe to jog around the neighborhood. Keep in mind TCOM is located in the museum district with expensive homes. BTW there is also a nice gym on campus.

Yup!

Slash hey guys, I see I'll be having two interviews on interview day. Are both interviews similar? Are they one on one?? People were listing interviews with a DO and an MD, is that for each?

Edit: nvm, I see it's one on one. SOOO PUMPED.

@txbound: good question.
crime is practically nonexistent around campus all the way to around where i live. this side of fort worth is very safe and quiet. i don't even think about it.

I interview next Thursday. Will they let me know who my interviewers are beforehand so I can look them up?

Yes they will. When you arrive Caroline will give you a folder with all the information (including your two interviewers). You will either have morning interviews or afternoon interviews.

Be negative. Jeez that's impressive.

Thanks Aperture. Looks like I will have to sneak off to look them up. Also! Did many students bring tablets to take notes on, like iPads?

Yes, well some brought notepads and took notes as the orientation went on or as they proceeded through the tour. Tablets should not be an issue. When you arrive in the morning, you will be given a folder with information such as you interviewers, campus map, student organizations, crime statistics, residency matching and other information. They will also personally talk to you about your application and make sure everything is up to date.

Also do not forget to print out the parking pass!

Great! Thank you. And sorry my autocorrect messed your name.

Bumping to move this up above last year's thread.

Hey, sorry if someone has already answered this but, if it says your application has been reviewed and you have not received an interview invite, does that mean you will not receive one?

I am interviewing this Friday, (Oct 5th) very excited about it I was going crazy just waiting
Average Stats: 27N MCAT, 3.96 sGPA 3.94 gGPA In State from Fort Worth, Non traditional student with extensive medical involvement, a lot of volunteer hours in a hospital. I applied since mid - May. Goog LOR from MD's, DO's and faculty PhD'S.

Really excited about the oportunity, I only applied to TCOM, I am only interested in a DO school so no point in applying to any Allopathic schools, if I cannot get into TCOM I plan on retaking the MCAT, I took it without preparation and without taking any Ochem nor Physics classes so I know I can do better.

Love TCOM, been around it to several tours and activities and in my opinion is one of the top schools in the country.

Haven't heard that one before. Have you checked the old threads for TCOM? I don't think they reject anyone until after interview season.

Like ur chances as long as ur interviews aren't terrible. Good luck!

Same here. I believe, and want to believe, that is a good thing.

Interviewed today. There is a lot of time spent waiting for your interview time or for something to start, so be prepared to make small talk. Two students talked to use when they saw us in the waiting area, which was really cool. My first interview was first thing in the morning. He spent a lot of time talking about osteopathic medicine and asked me a total of probably three questions. It didn't seem like he looked at my application material at all (they're provided with your activities and essays, no grades or MCAT scores). The questions were situational. The second interview was in the afternoon and it was obviously the interviewer had closely reviewed my essays and activities. We had an amazing discussion and I think we really bonded. I left on a really good note.

The facilities were all very new and clean, the students seemed very happy. They have a powderpuff football game they're excited about.

Fort Worth, particularly where the school is, is beautiful and relaxed.

Overall, I had a really excellent interview experience and would be happy to attend!

Sent in my secondary a month or so ago. Application is still "complete" but I hope they send a II soon!

+1! Please send me an invite!

Btw, i did not receive a confirmation email after i submitted my secondary. Is that abnormal? My portal status says I'm complete. Just want to make sure.

As long as your portal says you're complete then you're ok. I didn't get a complete email either.

glad you had a good visit. yes, we're going to have our 1st yr vs 2nd yr game this afternoon after the exams, its our little superbowl that the teams have been practicing for. it was a lot of fun last year.

the rivalry is only on the field tho. we have a good buddy system between 1st yrs and 2nd yrs.

I interviewed this morning, both interviews were early, first interviewer was a DO, she seemed like she did not read my file but she was prety friendly and conversational, it felt like I connected with her prety well, she asked me about my experiences and my activities, no hard questions at all.
The second interviewer was an MD, she was very cordial and knowledgeable, very very friendly and the whole interview we talked about things we have in common, very very easy going.

I felt really good, I left with a re-inforced preference for TCOM, I really love the school but now it feels like home, I really hope I get accepted. Everybody makes you feel like you are already part of the team and they know how to make you feel welcomed. Love the atmosphere and the friendliness of everyone around campus (students, faculty, employees.) they all really try to help you.

This is hilarious . Thanks!

I also looked online and found an old Youtube.

I think that's a great tradition - a wonderful destresser for sure.... 👍👍

have the questions been pretty standard? I hear it's extremely conversational.

How is TCOM with bringing guests on an interview. I'm wondering if I should tag along with my fiance and get a feel of the place 🙂

I didn't see any guests when I interviewed. Several students in my group said that their parents just dropped them off and either went shopping or to the museums across the street.

I suppose it's ok to bring guests if they don't mind hanging around! 🙂

Yes, conversational, very informal. For questions, there was nothing off the wall or not on the various lists I had seen. Good luck with your interview! :luck:
