Hi guys,

long time lurker here and I haven't seen an up to date thread comparing these schools for a few years. I don't want this to devolve immediately so I'll just put it out there that I know these are both great schools and I'm of the mind that neither will hold one back from doing what one wants to do.

Supporters of Wash U that I've talked to tend to believe that attending there affords you the credential of being an "elite doctor," and this opens doors. Can any Wash U alumni comment on this? I'd also like any people out there to speak up about how Wash U got this reputation for being a gunner school.

Thanks for the help!

Technically Wash is ranked higher, but at this level there is really no point in comparing. Both are "elite" and both open whatever doors you want them to.

Both are similar, but I'd def say WashU - it's top 10! I'd only pick Cornell over WashU if you really wanted to be in NYC (which is pretty enticing), but if not then I think WashU is the better choice.

Of course this is assuming that finances are similar.

Finances are similar. Manhattan could be very fun, and weill cornell has good housing options. St Louis housing will give you more bang for your buck, but I don't think you'd get as many notable memories from that city. Of course I could be wrong, but ny seems to have a very loyal following. Of course usnwr says go to washington university, but there are other factors to consider. I'm hoping someone can give some insider info here...

Neither school is going to grant you the credential of being an elite doctor. Your credibility as a doctor is established by your own work ethic/residency training/etc. Both schools are connected to elite hospitals and will allow you to network with amazing physicians, so if finances are equal I would say choose where you felt more comfortable.

Please ignore the US News stuff.

Both programs could potentially get you into any residency you want, provided that you work hard; both are elite programs after all. WashU seems to have the advantage research-wise, however Cornell has the NYC location, not to mention HSS and MSKCC if you are interested in ortho and oncology.

What are you basing this on?
