I would assume they do work with a good deal of underserved patients. I typically check the demographics on the wikipedia page for the location and make my judgment based on that. I haven't found anywhere that specifically says "WE WORK WITH UNDERSERVED PATIENTS!!!!". I wish it were that easy! With some of the bigger hospitals, you can get more information. Just have to do a little digging.

Thanks for the advice.
Yeah I wish it would be more simple and the info would be better

Verified 7/14, OOS resident, received the secondary invitation today. Will probably look at the essay questions tonight and try to get it in by the end of the week.

Anyone know how stringent the screens are for EVMS? More of, how many people are offered secondaries vs how many people apply in their primary app.

Verified in late July and just got a secondary today as well. I'm on MCAT hold until my scores come out in a couple of weeks though.

I'm thrilled I wasn't screened out! EVMS is one of my top choices!

I applied because I have lived in Hamptons Roads my entire life with the exception of during the college school year. Hampton roads includes VBeach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, and Hampton as well as the greater Hampton Roads areas like Williamsburg for anyone unclear on this. The school has very strong ties to the area and my impression is that they enjoy seeing students with a strong interest in working in the area or at least virginia. I wrote about my strong affiliation to the area and interest in staying there or spending time in rural virginia. I also mentioned my interest in their research with fertility and recent Diabetes work. EVMS also offers smaller class sizes, which I kind of find as a plus once you're accepted (not while applying) because you have a better chance of knowing everyone in a ~115 person class than a 230 person class.

Also, anyone applying and expecting a military scholarship might find this useful to mention. More so for Navy than any other maybe, because Portsmouth Naval Hospital is located immediately across the water from downtown Norfolk. It's a very nice hospital with an amazing view of the city and port- I've spent a lot of time there.

I'm also working on the "Why?" essay. Does anyone know of any particular programs they have or a particular emphasis the school has? The website is fairly devoid of information except for the bit about research. I'm just hurting for something to write that doesn't sound too terribly generic.

i highly doubt this school is pre-screened....has anyone actually NOT been invited to fill out a secondary? ie. Did they send you an email and say they wouldnt offer you a chance to fill it out.

If you look at the rejection thread people have been rejected pre-secondary already, so yes they do screen.

I'll be starting school at EVMS in a little over a week and yes, they do screen pre secondary.

They reject a bunch of people pre-sec, including me last year. This year, I made it through though. 🙂

As a current student, I assure you, yes they pre-screen.

Hey, I'm a delayed matriculant into the class of 2013.

Regarding reasons to go to EVMS, I wrote about the school's commitment to the community (I'm spending 2 years with AmeriCorps NCCC doing national community service, so that idea was very appealing to me). Also, in line with that, I read somewhere that EVMS is one of the top 3 schools for volunteering in the country.

Honestly though, I didn't really figure out why I wanted to go there until I went and experienced the school. Then I came up with a whole reinforced list on the interview day.

If you don't know why you want to go to EVMS and you're close by, try going and visiting! Or talk to current students... seemed to me like a great atmosphere that everyone loves with a lot of really awesome people.

Good luck all! 👍

For quite a few of us that isnt a viable option. I am sure it is an awesome school though absed on what I read, which is why I am applying.

Well, just to clarify, the list I came up with on interview day included all the mumbo-jumbo about service, dedication to community, and humanism, except that it ceased being just mumbo-jumbo and became reality for me on that day. If you're altruistic and into service work, it might be good to mention because I think that's what worked for me.

But EVMS is embarking on their new research initiative as well, which is also exciting if you're more oriented toward that area. 🙂

Rejected pre-secondary...

I'm out-of-state. Apparently, they won't look at anyone below a 30 MCAT. I got a 29 and they said that's why I won't be sent a secondary...😱

But I wouldn't be surprised if there were other below 30 MCATers that actually got the secondary. Anyone out there?

Jeez, that's harsh, sorry. Someone on the rejection thread with a 31 was also screened out.

well i have a 30 mcat but i got a 28 after the retake, they did send me a secondary and i sent it back. I guess they took the highest MCAT.

hehe...the lady said that was the red flag on my application. :meanie:

Additional information she told me was that they had received about 1500 applications and most were out-of-state.

I somehow got past the primary screen with Virginia Commonwealth though! 👍

hey all,
im an OOS applicant from arizona. i got my EVMS secondary a couple weeks ago which was suprising. my current mcat score is a lowly 24 so i told them i was retaking on july 18th, and i defnitely thought they wouldn't send me a seconday until they reviewed my new MCAT score, but i guess i got lucky. sorry to hear about your circumstances doctoroo.i definitely got rejected from VCU...i never realized it was a public school, that was a waste of money.

so far, it seems that EVMS and Rosalind Franklin have had the most amount of essay questions. i sent out the secondary a few days ago; all the questions were really straightforward so that was nice. i attached two of the same pics, no biggie. oh well. good luck all.

Nice. I hope your retake score is around what you hope it will be. Good luck to you too!

yeah me too, a 24 won't get me in anywhere. it's weird b/c i never scored that low on my amcas practice tests. im shooting for that golden 30, even though it seems like everyone on SDN averages a score of 35+ somehow.

anyways, more importantly, im sorry your jazz lost in the playoffs. i can sympathize with you b/c im a suns fans.

does anyone have any useful information on the curriculum or community service...there really isnt much on the site and its tough to find good reasons to apply there.

i dont mean to sound rude or unhelpful....but i go through a bunch of these threads and people are always like "why should i apply here?"
usually with schools like eastern virgina, there aren't that many unique reasons to apply there so i dont think another applicant would tell you the reasons why. otherwise their application is gonna be identical to everybody's else's. for the most part, everyone on SDN is helpful, but when it comes to secondaries it's kind of difficult to give another competitive applicant the exact same reasons you are applying to the same school. i suggest you continue to do some research, everything is available on the website, you just gotta search harder.

well you are unhelpful...so anyone who attends evms or wouldnt mind providing some information, that would be of great help....I have looked pretty hard already. thank you.

Yeah, the lady actually asked me whether I was retaking the MCAT and I said no. Daaaam! Maybe that's why they didn't send it! 😀

That's worrisome to me. I got a secondary, but I don't have any MCAT scores yet. I'm still going to send it in because I'd love to attend. I just hope it won't be a waste of money if my MCAT score doesn't hit the 30 mark.

This doesn't make sense since they are sending out secondaries to OOS individuals who haven't taken the MCAT yet. This is strange and makes me not want to submit the secondary until I have my MCAT scores.

You might want to call them to clear up the issue before you delay submission. Delaying might put your application behind too many other individuals, thus hurting your chances.

i've called different schools and this is what i can gather:

admissions comittees sometimes will look at your whole application without the mcat score. if your application is impressive enough without an MCAT score, then they will invite you to a secondary (like i got from EVMS) . if you application does not meet their standards, they won't even wait for the updated scores and will send you a reject (like I got from VCU). if your app is somewhere in the middle, then they'll wait for you MCAT scores and then make a final judgement.

No secondary for me yet. Last yr got the secondary and even an interview. Yikes I'm afraid they might have screened me out, and I contacted them twice via email and no response.

hi i just got the secondary on fri and trying to fill it up. I was wondering what are you guys writing about why you want to go to EVMS. I wasn't able to find anything interesting on their website. I think they really should update their info. Anyway was wondering if someone found anything interesting about them cause i didn't. Except the pediatric research center.

glad to see you on this thread, hopefully evms works out better for us than nymc

Anyone know how many characters or words will fit in each little essay section. My guess is around 500 characters. Just wanted to see what my limit was before I start writing away.

If you fill each line completely to the end, you can get about 750 characters. In actuality you will probably have enough space for 650-700 characters.

as im doing this secondary, i, all of a sudden, feel so frustrated about these damn character/word/space limits!!!! yes, i'll admit that i tend to be on the wordy side, but come on...."describe all related activities in 50 words please." there isn't an actual prompt like that, but I wouldn't be surprised.

sorry for the vent. hope you guys are doing better at this than i am =)

now back to editing down and trimming...argh

OOS, got an invite to come interview today. so very excited and surprised

I am just now filling out the Virginia In-State Tuition Determination form, and it asks for proof of voter registration. Unfortunately I lost my voter registration card a long time ago (my county will allow you to vote with just your driver's license). Did anyone else NOT send in a copy of this? Seriously, I've lived in Virginia for 15 years total, 5 of which have been the past five years. Not only that but I've gotten in-state tuition at VCU for the past four years. I swear I'm in-state! I really don't think they would need the voter registration card if I send a copy of my VA driver's license, right?

I just checked that I was not a registered voter because I have not received my registration card yet. That way, I didn't have to worry about explaining why I did not have it. I just sent copies of my license and car registration and that seemed to work fine.

I did the same thing Lucylu did, figured they weren't going to really check if you are registered to vote or not. Another question for you IS-er's, for where have you lived for the past 2 years question, do they mean where our permanent address is (in VA) or where we've actually lived (I go to school in St Louis, MO)? UVA's form asked for where you have physically been located so I was a little confused since EVMS didn't specify. Thanks.

I had the same issue last year, and I just wrote down on a piece of paper that I sent them that I had lost my voter reg card. They didn't seem to care. I had called and asked about it, and the lady on the phone kind of just laughed and said not having a voter reg card wasn't a big deal.

Thanks guys for the quick responses! I just find it weird that they require so much stuff from you, especially when all you have to do for UVA is fill out the form. VCU doesn't even require any of this stuff (no form either).

Hi GeorgeStPierre, good to see you 2. I hope that something would work out better than nymc 🙂

Yes, you HAVE to send the voter card. This is what you need:

Copy of VA Drivers License

Copy of VA Voters Card

Copy of VA Car Registration

Copy of your VA Tax Form from previous year (NOT FEDERAL), or

if you indicated that your parents provided over half of your support. Please send page 1 of your parent's Federal (NOT STATE) return where it indicates that you are a dependent.

Well that's not what beachblonde said, and I certainly hope it's not crucial to have it. I sent it this morning without my voter reg. card and it's due in 2 days. I mean, they have my tax information, my parents' tax information, my VA driver's license, and my car registration. Do they really need a voter registration card in addition to all of this?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens in a couple days when they get my application.

don't worry about it, i didn't send in a voter reg. card and have a complete file and "in-state interview invitation"

I received an email when there was something missing from my in state form.

Chad: though you've already sent your application, it's really easy to get your voter registration, and you can mail it tomorrow if you still want.

Google "virginia state board of elections", and click on it when it comes up. On the left, click "Online Services". Then, "verify your voter registration status". Click on "Voter Registration", fill in the info, and print the confirmation!

Takes 60 seconds to do. I called them last week in a panic, and they're the ones who gave me the instructions.

how could a school force you to register to vote, that seems ridiculous, I would imagine it is just another piece of evidence they could use to prove your a resident of that state but not necessarily mandatory. I think everyone SHOULD register to vote and vote, but there are a myriad of young people who are not registered.
