hello SDNers, long time lurker

I have a question for any of you great people to kindly respond. I am accepted to Penn St COM and I received a late interview for George Washington in late Feb. I am a poor student from Cali and I know that if I go to the GWU interview..more likely, i'll be waitlisted and waste my 250 dollar airplane fee, however, I heard that GWU has a lot of movement in their waitlist in May.

My question: Which school is better in landing residency match in Cali (since I want to go back to Southern Cali after med school)? Also, I am leaning towards emergency medicine or internal medical (GI). And also, can someone post a link or PDF file of GWU residency match list for 2008.

Thank you all.

I cannot make up your mind for you on whether or not to go. But, I can tell you that the waitlist movement is very variable from year-to-year. Some years, much of the class is filled via WL. However, last year, according to SDN data and quotes from the school, the WL did not move too much.

Check the school's student handbook on the GW website for a matchlist summary. I am not sure how detailed it is, though.

Hello All. This is my first post on SDN. woo.
Well, I have been invited to interview in early March, and like one of the poster above said, is this merely an interview for a wait list spot? I will definitely go, because just the thought of being able to interview at GW is quite an honor for me. But in terms of statistics, what would be my chances when interviewing in early March. I see that last year they accepted ~385/1080 interviews. So that is about a 1/3 acceptance:interview ratio??

Also, does anyone know if they review the entire amcas prior to the interview (PS, Letters of Rec, activities list, etc). Or wait until after interview to do that?

I have been reading this page for a while, and hope I have the chance to see some of you next year in DC 🙂

I am almost 100% positive they review the entire ACAS prior to invitation.

However, the interviews are closed. So, your actual interviewer does not see your file before your actual interview.

Thank you for your reply. So does the interview serve as the final YES or NO or MAYBE (wait list) in this process?

I have no idea. Every school is very different. You will have one faculty and one student interview.

Thank you all.

Last year the waitlist had very little movement.

Apparently, the year before that, it had a lot of movement.

Does anyone know the method which GW uses to fill their class?

ie: Do they leave open spots until the end?

I believe they fill the class as spots open up.

so basically right now they are interviewing for wait list spots ? or no ?

I wonder that as well. Can anyone from previous years applicant pool comment on this issue?

But I doubt a school would want to bring so many students to interview merely for a wait list spot, I am sure they will offer some acceptances as well.

Is anyone interviewing in early March?

This worries me- especially due to the number of students who leisurely hold on to multiple acceptances until May 15.

For instance, if they do indeed fill to capacity and waitlist the rest, many people who would normally be accepted could be put onto the AL simply because someone is holding onto multiple acceptances- often knowing they will not go to certain schools. I would be a shame if many of you are getting AL'd simply because someone who got an acceptance in Oct is holding on to it, knowing they will end up somewhere else.

Does Penn St give instate tuition after one year? If it does, honestly, I dont think its even worth your time going to the GWU interview(esp since the interview is late in the cycle and the school is having issues with accredition).

although many who interviewed after Dec 15th have not heard anything, is it possible that GW has filled their class already?? I have seen many on sdn get waitlisted of lately. Those who interviewed in January and early Feb could not be all for waitlist. can anyone shed some light on this issue?

I doubt that GW has filled their class already, because they offer many more acceptance than their class size. Also, it wasnt as everyone who interviewed in October/November was receiveing acceptances, they have been offering acceptances/ wait lists from the beggining. Granted, chances are higher of acceptances in the beggining, but thats probably because they invite very very qualified applicants right away. And then others (such as me) are being invited after the initial pre-interview hold.
Maybe I am just saying this to be positive.
I really Really REALLY want to go to GW.

That being said, current students at GW: Are there any tips from your interviews you would like to offer us students in the limbo stage?
🙂

Hey Guys,

So i feel really bad about constantly annoying GW with my persistent phone calls and questions, but i got some info regarding the alternate list (AL).

  • The AL is NOT ranked
  • The class is NOT full yet
  • GW re-reviews each AL file many times throughout the year
  • During re-review all AL files are looked at as a group in their entirety (ie- they are not compared to recent interviewee files that are awaiting a decision)
  • Around May 15th is when the AL typically begins to show movement however some people can hear sooner
  • Contrary to SDN speculation, last year's AL did have significant movement. I guess those people who got pulled off just weren't SDN members... or something.
  • "Plenty"/"A good number"/ "Many" students get pulled of the GW AL each year.
  • There is still hope. There is always hope :luck::luck::luck:

Overall, i think mbe36 hit the nail on the head with his multiple acceptance theory. Looks like we'll just have to wait for May to come around. :xf:

Thanks Bahadur! I'm also an alternate and was losing hope, but hearing that there was a lot of movement last year, and that they continually review our apps is reassuring!

:clap:Well done, Bahadur!! You have saved us, AND the GW staff, a great bit of time and stress haha. The fact about last year's movement is very interesting. My understanding was the contrary- and I thought it had been quoted from someone at GW. SDN by a grain of salt...

I motion for Bahadur to be the first member to be pulled off of the Alternate List!

Thanks everyone, you guys rock! 😉

But now i think i've officially been blacklisted from their telephone lines:laugh:. Oh well sometimes you gotta take one for the team haha.

It's very generous of GW to re-review their AL throughout the cycle. I haven't heard of many other schools doing that. Guess it highlights how much they really value each individual applicant file. What's meant to be will be.

And that kind of calms down my crazy neurotic premed nerves a bit. Sort of.

Ive also heard that they allow you to add things to your files. So if you are on the wait list, then you can possibly send in new information. Grades, ECs, et cetra 🙂. So when they do review the files, they will be able to see your continued interest in the school (via adding new materials).

HAHA yes me too! It was SUCH an awkward moment when i asked about last years supposed lack of movement. The person asked "Where did you hear that / who told you?". And i was like "umm... friends?". 😎

Thank you Bahadur! 🙂

PS- Brave?

It took me a good 10 minutes to realize you were talking about my name lmfao. When SDN wanted me to choose a s/n i just typed in the first name that came to mind and didn't even think about the meaning. I was probably just surfing Wiki for random Mughal facts.

Omeid would've probably been a more appropriate name, but whatevs.

Bahadur means brave in Hindi. And I thought that was a very appropriate name for SND and Med School Applications in general, because bravery is definitely needed!! 🙂

What does Omeid mean?

So no news this week from GW??

Omeid means "hope" in Persian. It can also mean "dream" in certain cases.

congrats darknight. that shows they can't have filled their class right if they are still giving out invites. goodluck to everyone still waiting/hoping!

To those accepted:

Did you get an amail AND something in the mail?

I called and was told, "You should receive an e-mail and something in the mail by the end of the week."

Not cool:

"Correspondence concerning the status of your application has been sent to you via postal mail to your preferred mailing address on file with AMCAS"

I am not giving up. This is my top choice.

You probably already know this, but that is standard protocol for a waitlist :lame:. Welcome to the club.

yeah mbe, i'm sorry but i think accepted is email. mail is waitlisted from previous posters.

WOw I just read that article... Dont really know what to make of it... when I toured there in November, I thought the facilities were amazing

I guess ill see when I go for my interview in march

But I really really doubt that GW will loose its accreditation.

Also..... Do most status changes/new developments happen on thursday? Thats a little trend I have noticed? Can anyone confirm?

I just got an interview invite for March 5th! My status never changed and I sent an LOI a few weeks ago.

AMEN!!!

Don't worry man, we are all in this together. I have a feeling that somehow we will get through (and IN). I really do. You definitely deserve the best and i just know that they will come around eventually. :xf:

Now... can May 15 please hurry up and already get here? Kthxbai.

Questions to those of you who have interviewed at GW:
1. Do they give you the name of the interviewers when you get there? Or is it just, you find out when you walk into the room?
2. Is lunch RIGHT before the interview? Did you have a little bit of time to get ready for the interview.. make sure there isnt anything green in your teeth, etc etc..
3. Is the student interviewer always first? Or do some have student first, and some have faculty first?
4. Do they ask any questions politically related?
5. In terms of financial aid, I read that they dont go over it as much, but if you come with questions, will they answer them?

Thanks 🙂

1. You know the name of your interviewers before you walk into the room to meet them.

2. People have different interview times. You may have substantial time between lunch and the interview. Personally, I was with the first group to have interviews, but there was still a bit of time to gather myself beforehand.

3. Not sure, personally my faculty interviewer was first.

4. My student interviewer asked some healthcare/politics questions, but not my faculty interviewer.

5. They give you a handout with information on financial aid and talk briefly about it. It's pretty much the same with most med schools.

Overall, the day was pretty low key. I think the best people to ask questions to are the current students who will be hanging out with you on the interview day. Good luck!
