I got that email during my lunch break and now I dont feel like eating or working. So for ALs is there any point in waiting to hear anything for the next month?

No, I was told movement would begin shortly AFTER May 15.

dont worry! just try to keep positive and hope for the best. I didn't get in.. feel bad.. but what can you say right? Just hope that they'll take me off this AL!

Got an email...but they were just asking for my passport sized picture to include with the file. I am almost sure I sent one back when I did my secondary.

Oh well, now my app is prob. thrown back in the huge pile to be looked at again in a few weeks b/c it was not "complete".

Interviewed 2/26.

interview on 2/13... wait listed on 4/6. =(

Hey MD808,

I interviewed on the same date as well (2/13) and got on the AL the same day as you. I hope that they take us off the AL.

I was wondering if they asked you for any additional info, because they had asked me what I did since December of '07.

Did you send any additional info or letter of intent?

Good luck!

yea i have the thanks for interviewing message too and the decision came by email half an hour ago.

NYMD23,

That makes three of us from 2/13 that were put on AL on the same date (4/6). Hopefully, we all get in and good luck to everyone.

i'm on the AL too and i know we have to stay positive.........

hate to be the downer, but wasn't there something like a 5 person move in the wait list last cycle..?

Same here! Pretty crazy.

Have people from march heard? except those two that heard last weekish?

ised I interviewed with you and got an email yesterday asking me to send in documentation of completing a course last semester. I think they must be starting to go over our applications. But who knows they seem to do it randomly I'm sure there's a system but it's whack.

Im surprised that there hasnt been any activity today!?!

AL 4/6 🙁 Luckily I have other acceptances to fall back on, but it's disappointing and I am tired of waiting!

Good luck to all.

i did some quick calculations.

gw had an entering class of 177 last year. from what i have heard, med schools accept - straight out - twice that number. by this assumption, there should be around 350 straight acceptances this year.

they interview from sept-march, 3 days a week. comes out to be around 84 interview dates. there are probably lesser number of interview days - factoring in the holidays, but i'm trying to come up with a conservative estimate for number of acceptances from each interview. assuming there are 12 students in each interview, they interview around 1000 people each year. that would mean that there is around 30-35% chance of someone getting straight acceptance, if they interviewed. so, give or take, there would 3-4 acceptances from each interview date.

now this is quite late in the season. so saying there would be 2 acceptances, or at the MAX 3, from interview dates that were late in the season wouldn't be unreasonable.

what do you guys think?

What this really means is that their waitlist is huge, probably like 650 or so students. Assuming that they pull 100 people from the list (totally made up number, don't really know how many they pull, but I doubt it is more), then you have a 15% chance of getting off the list. So... you have a better chance getting a straight up acceptance than getting pulled from the waitlist.
Why do they need to interview so many students? Do they have a problem filling their class?

I agree.

I remember Emily, the interview guide, telling us they interview ~1000 people during the season and they give outright acceptances to ~1/3 interviewees.

So, does that mean we have about 600 people on the AL? I am not sure about that because we do not know how many people are rejected post-interview. However, the p-i rejections seem the least common of the post-interview actions.

:luck::luck::luck: Stay positive!!

I suspect they are really trying to cover their bases 1) because of the economy (people are more likely to opt for state schools with cheaper tuition) and 2) because of their probation. Could be why the waitlist is turning out to be so huge because they don't want to reject so many people that they can't fill their class.

From my understanding, they interviewed 1000 people in the previous years as well.

Yeah I'm talking about how many people they seem to be waitlisting. And as far as the number of people they've interviewed I think it's pretty standard to interview that many people for that many acceptances. Seems like it from all the other schools I interviewed at.

Really? This is the only school that I saw who interviews so many applicants. Others do about 550 - 750.

Not all schools oversubscribe their class so we can't be sure that they will accept ~350 applicants outright for a class of 177. We also need to keep in consideration that of a waitlist of ~600 it would not be unthinkable for 300 to 400 to withdraw after May 15 due to other acceptances- especially because GW is one of the schools that "everyone" applies to and a good chunk of those students get into another school they would rather go to anyways. Last year they interviewed 942 for a class of 177, by the way. Albert Einstein interviewed 1446, Case Western interviewed 1229, and Drexel interviewed 1550 (irrelevant but interesting).

GW gets more applicants to begin with so its not a surprise its interviews more and thus waitlists more. I think relative to the number of applications GW receives, everything else is proportional to most schools.

There is no need to withdraw from the wait list for the May 15th deadline even if you already have an acceptance. Unless, you are 100% you don't want to go to that school. I don't know if many really withdrew from the wait list.

Wow, that is really interesting how those other schools interview so many applicants. I wonder what it says about that school since many other schools do fine interviewing just 500-700.

considering what mbe36 said, gw does seem to oversubscribe.

I agree- I thought that people would not withdraw because there is no need after May15, but I have heard that loads of people withdraw anyways out of respect.

The best source for hard information on this is the online edition of the USNews rankings. Personally, I could care less about the rankings themselves, but the data for each school (if they provided the info to USNews) includes the numbers actually ACCEPTED, rather than just the number of matriculants.

According to USNews, in '07 GW interviewed 942 people and accepted 302 (32%; that's one of the lower acceptance/interview ratios out there). I think "acceptances" theoretically includes both outright accepts and accepts from the WL, but I have heard that GW had very little WL movement last year. Therefore, their '07 number might not reflect many accepts from the WL.

During lunch, it was mentioned that this year they will accept outright around 230 or so. They had interviewed around 1000 this year. So, I think the 302 number from last year might include those accepted from AL. This is just my assumption.

Best of luck to us all!

who mentioned the 230 number? that is not a great news actually. this brings the number of people accepted per interview to a new low. given its so late in the process, who knows if they are just accepting one person per interview - i would so like to be wrong in this estimation.

Interviewed 3/3 Accepted 4/8

So excited and relieved! With 3 waitlists and 1 with no news yet it feel so good to have an acceptance! I can breathe yayyyyyyy! 😀😀😀

Congrats Enroh! That's so awesome. Throw out the MCAT books and the idea of doing another AMCAS. I am waitlisted at 1 school and waiting to hear from GWU (March 5 interview) so I am sitting on pins and needles waiting...

AHH!! Congratulations!!! everytime my phone buzzes i have a heart attack now.. 🙁

SOOO happy for you 🙂

I called the office today and found out that my application was reviewed but that no final decision was made. Has this happened to anyone else? Do you know what this generally means in terms of why they have some indecision. Also, I was asked to send in information regarding the completion of 2 courses from last semester this past Monday and was wondering if perhaps they are waiting for this information to arrive before making a decision?

Iish I got an email yesterday asking me for documentation of completing two courses last semester as well, and today I got an email with an acceptance. It seems they don't need the documentation before they make a decision but I'd try to send it ASAP anyways. Good luck! I hope your email Monday means good news for you!

I called today and they said I have been reviewed and no final decision has been made. I don't owe any paperwork though-- interesting...

I interviewed on Feb 27th. Do you guys know if they usually look over files several times before coming to a decision? Also, is the committee meeting everyday now?

Sigh... I durno... I have SO much stuff to do... but I cant stop thinking about this 🙁... I just want to know so I can move on..... BAH

my friend who interviewed on 3/5 or 3/6 checked his status today it said a decision has been mailed....he has not gotten an email. Does that mean he was waitlisted...rejected or accepted? I thought if you are waitlisted it says "Thanks for interviewing" on your status page.....HELP.

That has generally in the past meant waitlist. For acceptance, you usually get an email before anything else. While these are trends, I'm sure there are exceptions as well

interesting. hey since you have access to the list, what is GW's rank on US News?

don't worry about it too much. focus on the work at hand and make sure you have the semester (if you are in school) or other things in life in control.

on another note. this "no final decision has been made" conversation on the thread makes me wonder if this wording means a "post-interview hold"...

That's what I was thinking, but my question is, how is a post-interview hold any different than an alternate? Does it mean that we are ranked slightly above those given alternate positions, but still a little apprehensive about giving us an acceptance? Does anyone know if it common for an application to be reviewed several times before a decision is made?

There's two routes they can go- accept you or waitlist you (aka alternate). Hold simply means they have met and haven't been able to yet decide if they want to accept you or put you on the alternate list. Basically, hold is like calling a timeout to discuss what to do a little longer... Hope that helps.

Yeah, that's what I assumed. I guess its better than being made an alternate immediately as they still have some people who could see you as an admit.

Hrry: When you called them did they give you any more info? Did they say how long it might be. Is that the explanation they gave you?

I didn't ask about hold/alt list- I have known that though. I did call Monday and they said I have not yet been reviewed since my intervied and today they said my file has been reviewed and is still under review- makes me think I am in limbo between accpet/alt in their eyes- scary.

I feel you. This is just a really intense wait, especially knowing they probably went over the application and had some level of difference in their individual opinions about it

Yea. Such is life I guess. I am on a waitlist and waiting to hear- all I can do is keep writing/e-mailing/calling to try and get in before August...
