I got that email during my lunch break and now I dont feel like eating or working. So for ALs is there any point in waiting to hear anything for the next month?
interview on 2/13... wait listed on 4/6. =(
yea i have the thanks for interviewing message too and the decision came by email half an hour ago.
NYMD23,
That makes three of us from 2/13 that were put on AL on the same date (4/6). Hopefully, we all get in and good luck to everyone.
AL 4/6 🙁 Luckily I have other acceptances to fall back on, but it's disappointing and I am tired of waiting!
Good luck to all.
i did some quick calculations.
gw had an entering class of 177 last year. from what i have heard, med schools accept - straight out - twice that number. by this assumption, there should be around 350 straight acceptances this year.
they interview from sept-march, 3 days a week. comes out to be around 84 interview dates. there are probably lesser number of interview days - factoring in the holidays, but i'm trying to come up with a conservative estimate for number of acceptances from each interview. assuming there are 12 students in each interview, they interview around 1000 people each year. that would mean that there is around 30-35% chance of someone getting straight acceptance, if they interviewed. so, give or take, there would 3-4 acceptances from each interview date.
now this is quite late in the season. so saying there would be 2 acceptances, or at the MAX 3, from interview dates that were late in the season wouldn't be unreasonable.
what do you guys think?

I suspect they are really trying to cover their bases 1) because of the economy (people are more likely to opt for state schools with cheaper tuition) and 2) because of their probation. Could be why the waitlist is turning out to be so huge because they don't want to reject so many people that they can't fill their class.
Yeah I'm talking about how many people they seem to be waitlisting. And as far as the number of people they've interviewed I think it's pretty standard to interview that many people for that many acceptances. Seems like it from all the other schools I interviewed at.
Not all schools oversubscribe their class so we can't be sure that they will accept ~350 applicants outright for a class of 177. We also need to keep in consideration that of a waitlist of ~600 it would not be unthinkable for 300 to 400 to withdraw after May 15 due to other acceptances- especially because GW is one of the schools that "everyone" applies to and a good chunk of those students get into another school they would rather go to anyways. Last year they interviewed 942 for a class of 177, by the way. Albert Einstein interviewed 1446, Case Western interviewed 1229, and Drexel interviewed 1550 (irrelevant but interesting).

I agree.
I remember Emily, the interview guide, telling us they interview ~1000 people during the season and they give outright acceptances to ~1/3 interviewees.
There is no need to withdraw from the wait list for the May 15th deadline even if you already have an acceptance. Unless, you are 100% you don't want to go to that school. I don't know if many really withdrew from the wait list.
Wow, that is really interesting how those other schools interview so many applicants. I wonder what it says about that school since many other schools do fine interviewing just 500-700.

The best source for hard information on this is the online edition of the USNews rankings. Personally, I could care less about the rankings themselves, but the data for each school (if they provided the info to USNews) includes the numbers actually ACCEPTED, rather than just the number of matriculants.
According to USNews, in '07 GW interviewed 942 people and accepted 302 (32%; that's one of the lower acceptance/interview ratios out there). I think "acceptances" theoretically includes both outright accepts and accepts from the WL, but I have heard that GW had very little WL movement last year. Therefore, their '07 number might not reflect many accepts from the WL.
During lunch, it was mentioned that this year they will accept outright around 230 or so. They had interviewed around 1000 this year.

Sigh... I durno... I have SO much stuff to do... but I cant stop thinking about this 🙁... I just want to know so I can move on..... BAH
Yeah, that's what I assumed. I guess its better than being made an alternate immediately as they still have some people who could see you as an admit.
Hrry: When you called them did they give you any more info? Did they say how long it might be. Is that the explanation they gave you?
