AmyWho: I had my interview on 10-15. It went very well. It was very relaxed and there were less than 10 interviewees that day so that also made it very relaxed. Everyone was realy nice. I'm just waiting now to hear if I got accepted or not. They were supposed to send out the letters 11-15 but I havent received anything yet. I know they are behind so i'm trying not to stress out. If you have any more personal or specific questions about the interview you can pm me. God Bless!

Does anyone else feel like Celie running down the driveway looking for a letter from Nettie but the letter hasn't come yet!!!????:scared::scared::scared:

Ms. Walk just sent out an e-mail saying that decision letters will be mailed on Thursday (hopefully all acceptances). I guess the earliest it could get to me is Saturday, probably Monday. I hope that everyone receives an early Christmas gift. :soexcited:

Wassup all you future Bisons!

i submitted everything in sept but i was placed on the waitlist a couple months ago. damn.
waitlist? did u interview? i submitted around the same time but havent heard a thing.

how did your interview go? im sure you rocked it.

I believe it went well. At least I hope it went well. The whole day was great and it just made me love Howard even more. Ms. Walk is probably hands down one of the most awesome people ever. She is great. She also wanted me to tell everybody to relax a little bit because it is a long cycle. They got 5800 applications this year. She also said that she is in the middle of reading a gang of secondaries right now. So she really doesn't want anybody to call right now. If you haven't heard anything yet, just try to be as patient as possible because they are doing their best to get through all the secondaries. My interviewer was also great. She made me feel very comfortable from the jump. I am really really hoping for an acceptance. I know that HUCM is where I want to be. If I get an acceptance here, it is game over for me and this cycle! God is good and faithful so I am believing and trusting Him to bring me through. God bless yall!

I am sure you will be fine. As long as you have a record of serving and in the underserved and you are genuine about it, you will be good. Of course do well in your classes and mcat, but that goes without saying.

Howard University's College of Medicine is my top choice. I appreciate Howard University's emphasis on working in underprivileged areas because it is what I aspire to do. I also admire that between 11-14 percent of medical students graduate with specialties pertaining to obstetrics and gynecology as opposed to the 4% that is very common among many other medical schools (I want to be an OB/GYN). I wonder if I even have a chance at being accepted though. I have a good GPA, however, I am Caucasian. In addition, while I have done a lot of volunteer work and community service, it was mainly all done in high school (been trying to make up for lost times). It's not that I lost interest in participating in community service during college, but I was often taking 18-23 credits and I didn't have much free time. Lastly, I witnessed my dog get run over and killed the morning of my MCAT. Suffice to say, I did not do too well the first time around with the test. Howard does mention that they will review January 2009 MCAT scores and I have opted for that but I also know that there are nearly 6,000 applicants for 2009 admissions so I wonder if they will even get around to evaluating those scores before the class fills up. Sorry for the long message, I'm just wondering what hope I have to be accepted to Howard for 2009 because I really want to go.

Other than that, I wish everyone the best of luck. Godspeed!

I was accepted into Howard in November with a 28O MCAT and 3.05 cum GPA. I think you have an excellent shot at being accepted. If you can communicate your motivation for practicing medicine with underserved populations you should be fine. Good luck and I wish the best for you.

My only suggestion is to apply, and give it your best. There are students at Howard of all ethnicities. I just think that the school tries to identify people that will be most likely to serve the school's mission. Anyone who discourages you from applying to your top choice school is not giving you good advice. I would also suggest that you find a way to prove your passion. I mean all pre-meds are busy and even if you can find 5 hours a week to volunteer at a local clinic or mission, then that goes a long way to provide evidence that you are truly passionate about serving. I mean being a doctor is only one way you can serve, and showing that you have found ways to give back even in a small way will let the adcom know that you are serious.

GOOD LUCK!

Congrats on your acceptance bro. You think you might attend?

I thank you both for your replies. It truly is encouraging. The application process as you already know, can be a grueling experience. The waiting involved can make you undergo some major emotional shifts. I've been bouncing between confidence and near giving up and forgetting 2009 admissions.

As for volunteer work. I plan to intern this upcoming spring semester before I graduate. I will either be volunteering at Planned Parenthood or assisting an OB/GYN at Holy Cross. Would it look bad if I volunteered at Planned Parenthood? I do come from a Catholic university and my pre-medical advisor has no qualms with me doing it, however, I am applying to some private schools that are Christian and I do respect the fact that they may be a pre-dominantly pro-life institution.

Congratulations! I imagine anyone who is accepted to Howard truly deserves it not just due to academic achievement but also due to their passion for helping people in underdeveloped and underserved areas, which from what I hear, is strongly critiqued by the evaluators during interviews.

If any medical school strikes you from their list for volunteering at planned parenthood, would you really want to attend anyway? I mean in the medical community when it comes to pro-life issues shouldn't we have to respect the will of our patients without regard to our own beliefs?

That's probably the most professional way to think of it. Agreed.

I know exactly what you mean Character. In addition, I was really concerned with the latest email I got, which stated that interviews end in March when the previous email sent by Ms. Walk stated that interviews end in April. I called the admissions office just to make sure. The person I spoke with was very short with me, but he said interviews apparently end in April. I sure hope that is the case. Good luck to you!

Mrs Walk, If you are reading this than don't sent me anymore update emails unless it's for an interview. Those emails do nothing but raise my blood pressure. 😀

The second half of the game has just begun. I am sure that you guys will be ok and that you will hear something. Just keep praying and believing!

damn, then i better call. did any of you receive confirmations that your application was complete?

I only received confirmation that my secondary was received. That is the only thing they confirm. They don't confirm LOR's. They only do that when you interview. When did you submit your secondary?

Just wanted to give my favorite thread a bump!
