So we get a call if we're accepted.... letter via snail mail if we're waitlisted or rejected?

Hope I don't get any mail from Hopkins then.... Waiting sucks.

So we get a call if we're accepted, then a letter via snail mail if we're waitlisted or rejected??

Man, I hate the waiting game.

I think so. I got a waitlist letter. Are they rejecting people post-interview, or does everybody get put on the waitlist?

Oops, sorry yeah I'm a MS1.

They call you if you've been accepted, you get a letter in the mail if it's a waitlist.

A significant portion of our class is off the waitlist (I think they tend to under-accept at the beginning to play it conservatively, worst case scenario is if more people matriculate than spots available).

Do they let you know anything if you call them after about 5 weeks?

hello friends,

i was asked this question during my interview, apparently they are using real life medical scenarios to screen for people who are able to think on their feet. Any ideas?

A 72-year-old disoriented man has a 60-pack year history of smoking, a chronic cough and a recent history of recurrent hemoptysis. Examination reveals clubbing and a left sided Horner's syndrome. Chest X-ray reveals a left apical pulmonary mass. He is clinically euvolemic with serum sodium of 115 mEq/L (normal 135-145), a serum osmolality of 249 mosm/kg and a urine osmolality of 438 mosm/kg.

a. Is his urine osmolality appropriate given his serum osmolality? Why?
b. Is his urine sodium likely to be:
<20 mEq/L
>20 mEq/L
either of the above
c. What is the likely diagnosis?
d. Would correction of serum sodium to 140 mEq/L within 24 hours be advised?

rofl...H.Q. you're a clown.

Really? Does this mean it's not totally hopeless? I have no idea how the Hopkins waitlist works.

Has anyone received a decision recently? Seems like the last acceptances went out the week of 11/3, according to the acceptance thread. I know they said 6-8 weeks after the interview, but... the waiting is killing me...

For my waitlisters out there--

I know it sucks. It really does. Being in limbo is much worse than knowing either way.

BUT the waitlist does not equal a death sentence. You just have to grit your teeth and wait and wait and wait. Maybe, in April or May, send a letter of intent/another recommendation if you have done something amazing since your interview. Or don't send one. I don't think it matters either way.

The waitlist slowly starts moving May/June so there's no sense in freaking out now (I know, it's very hard). The admissions office will send you a letter asking if you want to stay on the waitlist and to provide summer contact information. Make sure your fin aid is all submitted and sit tight for a few more weeks or months. Hopefully, one Thursday, they'll call and you can run around screaming for a while.

I'm an MS1 from the waitlist, and I know people who have gotten in July 30th-ish. Orientation begins mid-August, later than many other schools.

Make backup plans that can be scrapped easily, don't sign non-negotiable leases, avoid buying all your textbooks for another school, etc. if you're dead-set on Hopkins. Other schools are very understanding when you withdraw 🙂

Best of luck and if you have any more questions, let us MS1's know. We're procrastinating studying (abdomen smells like...knowledge!)

oh dear god so nervous. i feel like my interviews went well, but then again everyone felt that way! :luck: to everyone...i still have a while to wait until i hear their final decision!

I was hoping for some travel advice from someone who has interviewed or maybe one of the MS1s

The interview email said to plan to be there until 5. Does it really go this late? Would it be possible to try and catch a 6:50 plane? That looks like the only way I'll be able to get home that night.

I would think you could probably do it, but it could be a little tight. I was all done by around 3:30, but there were a couple people who were in their student interview until 4:30 or maybe a little later. The Baltimore airport is pretty close to Hopkins though, maybe 12 miles or so, so that ride shouldn't take long unless you hit rush hour.

When I was there, it went that late. I left the campus right at five. However, the airport is relatively close by. I made a 7PM flight.

ok, thanks, both of those comments were helpful. It seems really tight but I'd love to get home that night and not spend money on staying in Baltimore longer.

Is it rude to ask for one of the earlier student interviews?

No. They will accomodate those who need to catch flights. Just make sure you bring it up before lunch.

does anyone know how they feel about LOIs?

hi guys, same question! i also wanted to update them on some of my recent accomplishments...will they find this annoying? thanks much!

Obviously I don't know for sure, but my sense was that Hopkins (and most places) are very open to updating your file with recent accomplishments, etc. Similarly, sincere, specific LOI's couldn't hurt either.

That being said, I did neither of these two things and it worked out fine for me. So I don't think they are necessary, but you shouldn't be terrified of contacting the admissions committee to update your file either.

yeah, true. thanks! and congratulations! 🙂

Waitlisted today... It's the best that I could have hoped for since I really couldn't find any common ground with my interviewer. Oh well...

waitlisted as well. huge bummer, its my top choice

Good luck to all that are waitlisted, I know it sucks having to wait.

gah1, I just got an interview offer today for January 29th. They are still dishing them out!

Congrats, funkymonkeytoes! Just wondering though-- when did you submit your secondary and when were you complete?

Hey folks. Just curios, for those of you who were accepted, did you send a letter of interest after you interviewed. Thanks and congratulations!

any updates from those who have interviewed? It's been a little over a month for me and I'm getting nervous 😳.

i actually called today and asked this, and the lady said that they don't recommend it because the committee most likely wouldn't even look at it before a decision has been made... she said its appropriate if you're waitlisted (obviously).... they will put it in your file nonetheless.

Thanks for the info dr drummer! Very good to know.

did you get the sense that it might actually make a difference if you're waitlisted?

Has anyone who interviewed in November heard back yet? They told my group to expect to hear in mid-December, so now I'm neurotically trying to decide if its mid-december yet.

I didn't really get any vibes like that... I'm sure it is a very common thing to send a continued interest/intent letter if you are on the waitlist... but not until April/May time though... just my guess.

I interviewed November 13th and I'm always hoping I don't have mail from Hopkins... and praying for a phone call each day. :xf:

Interviewed in late October and was told we'd hear back in mid-December. Anxiously praying for a phone call but I'm getting really worried. Will be disappointed if I get waitlisted and if I get rejected I'll be depressed for a few days. Don't want to check mail.

Please, Hopkins, let me in!!

I'll update you guys when I hear back. Good luck to all of you, and please write here if you get anything!

I interviewed in late October as well, more than six weeks ago. I know they said they'd give us a decision within 4-6 weeks, but maybe Thanksgiving set things back a bit.

The last it seems they've offered an acceptance to someone on SDN seems to be early November...which should mean some of us should be hearing something any day now!

I keep hoping *not* to see a letter from Hopkins in my mailbox and am wishing for a 410 number to call my phone! This waiting is driving me nuts, especially since Hopkins is my first choice. Maybe they just want to give me the best Christmas present in the world a little closer to Christmas....I wish 🙂

Good Luck everyone!

good luck to all of you who will be hearing back soon! i've seen some of your mdapps profiles, and you guys are so amazing!!! i interviewed like 2 weeks ago, and i'm already nervous...man i have a while to wait.

does anyone know if hopkins is doing interviews next week? or is this the last of them before the holidays?

Yep they're interviewing next week

Just saw that you interviewed in November. I interviewed before you and haven't heard back yet, which means my waitlist/rejection letter is in the mail.

This makes me really sad.

As much as I'm disappointed, I'm really happy for you skiqueen! It must be awesome to know you are not only accepted to medical school, but to an awesome one. Congratulations!

aww, so if we interviewed at least a week before the 13th of nov... that prob means our letter's in the mail??

I don't know. I don't want to disappoint people! If you look at the acceptance thread for JH you can see that people who interviewed earlier than others sometimes got accepted later (if that makes sense). So please don't be discouraged.

my frend who interviewed 10/30 was accepted on thursday 12/4

darn doesn't sound good.. r there other ppl who interviewed Nov 6th and got a call?? (or mail)?

so I submitted my application back in July and just got an email this morning saying my application is complete and will be reviewed by the committee? How long after you were complete did you all hear about interview invites?

I'd say it took them about a month to invite me.

Anyone who interviewed late October hearing back yet? Nothing here yet. Almost sure I will be getting waitlisted or rejected in a few days, but have come to accept it. This is Hopkins after all, and I'm so grateful just to have interviewed there.

Thanks for the info Skiqueen!
