Hi All,
Another first year here and I just wanted to congratulate those of your who've been accepted! I'm loving my time at Hopkins (and I'll admit I still had some worries when I made the decision to come) and can absolutely recommend coming here. As for the questions:
1. I think my experience has been fantastic so far because of how well we are taken care of, the opportunities given to us and the awesomeness of my class mates. As for being taken care of, I really feel like they do everything possible to help us learn the material. We have binders full of the essential lecture notes so we don't need textbooks, all the lectures are recorded so we can watch/re-watch them at any time and the discussion leaders are suprisingly helpful. Its challenging material, but as helsizzle said, they really teach it to us in a large enough variety of ways that it sinks in. Also, they are frequently giving us meals/hosting events to help us ease the transition: for example, in our current unit we get breakfast breaks with donuts, bagels, fruit and coffee between morning lectures and last weekend the head of the surgery dept. hosted a pumpkin carving party at his home where he taught us to suture.
2. The people are amazing and amazingly diverse. We have atheletes, muscians, study all the times, artists, party animals, etc. etc. in our class and almost everyone is very personalable and interested in getting to know eachother. I know that sounds fake and I wouldn't believe it either, but it's absolutely been my experience.
3. No idea about the grading switch. I know it's been proposed, but I don't know what will happen. One thing I will say: my biggest reservation about Hopkins was the grading system and all my fears were unfounded. I thought it would be basically an A/B/C system with different names but it isn't at all. They really drill into our heads that we should strive for passing and honors are given to such a small number of people that it's not something most of us really think about. Every advisory person I've talked to has said pre-clinical grades don't matter at all when it comes to matching so we should spend these first two years trying to understand the material and exploring opportunities and interests so we are prepared when it comes to the wards/our futures. We are taught very much in the context of "you should understand this for your future patients/ for the future advancement of medicine" and with very little emphasis on grades. To find out our grades is actually fairly hard, so there's really not much emphasis on them.
4. I find that I have a pretty decent amount of free time so far. I'm not too big on the bar scene, so i've only been "going out" in that sense about once a week (though there are people going out 2-3 nights a week), but I think our class has a great balance of people looking to drink vs. do other things in their spare time. I've gone on camping trips, had potlucks, gone to concerts and canvassed in PA with my classmates and find there is pretty much always some random festival to attend in Baltimore. I've also gotten involved in a campus singing group and am taking Spanish class, so there really is time to be well rounded.
Sorry to write so much (and sorry it's not the most coherent composition, i've been immersed in the complement system 🙂)- I just know there are so many myths surrounding Hopkins Aed that definitely worried me when I was in your shoes and I want to do everything I can to assure you that they are wrong!
Congratulations again to those who have heard and good luck to all who are waiting. I'm in no way linked to admissions so I have no idea when you'll be hearing from them, but if you have any other questions please PM me!

I don't drink, and I am described by SDN as a teetotaler. Basically, I do not like drunken behavior because of what I constantly witnessed during my upbringing. Will I fit in at JHU?

dude, whatever floats your boat 😀

seriously, it's nice that in a small class of 120, there are people who like to do wildly different things. the options are endless. i'm friends with a lot of foodies and we cook ridiculous meals for fun. other people camp or do outdoorsy things. i wouldn't say there's a drinking culture. this isn't college anymore! of course, if that's what you want, i'm sure you can find people to party with you any night of the week.

first off, CONGRATS to you and to everyone else accepted. Its a great place. Also: to everyone else on the waitlist, a number of people have moved off the waitlist in previous years, so its not the end yet if u r still interested in coming. (its kinda funny that so many of us 1st years r on here randomly...i think we need a diversion from immuno studying....)

Anyways: here is my answer to your question (sorry it got a lil long), i hope it helps:

1. there are all kinds of things to do not involving drinking!!! (its med school!)

2. That said, if being around ppl who r drinking makes you feel uncomfortable or if you like people less knowing that they drink socially, you may want to revisit your thoughts on drinking b4 coming here or anywhere else.

there are events like LIVER rounds which we have on some fridays where a members of a dept will causally chat with us and tell us about their specialities. It might be over beer and pizza. These are AMAZING, PRODUCTIVE professionals. No one is "getting hammered." A ton of ppl wouldnt be drinking and you would not have to either. BUT if the fact that ppl were drinking offended you such that you wouldnt want to go, that would be unfortunate.

After the first exam, its a tradition that the 12th floor of reed hall throws a party to celebrate. They will have plenty of snack food and nonalcoholic beverages, but a number of people will be drinking (productive, diligent students who r simply unwinding after an exam--not alcoholics, etc) You'll have a good time without drinking. However, if the fact that people around you are drinking would make u uncomfortable, or you would think less of them for doing so, or you would feel an urge to lecture them or try to make them feel guilty, that wouldnt be good.

I guess my point is that there will be people who drink in med school here (as their schedules permit). there will be medical professionals u will meet here who drink (IN AN OUT OF HOSPITAL SETTING). A lot of people wont drink/ dont drink much/ drink only a lil socially. This is going to be true of anywhere you go. You need to realize that while there are many bad/destructive/poor health, etc aspects of drinking which have made you decide to not drink, others may and you'll occassionally come across them and drinking in certain ways and need to be oki/accepting of that. If thats oki (which Im assuming it is?) you'll be fine.

Interview invite at 8 pm on Halloween! What a pleasant surprise. They scheduled me for 12/11 in case you are interested.

Sep 25... so it took them about a month!

Congrats! I was complete the same day. I hope to hear something soon! It's nice to know they are finally reviewing more people who were complete at the end of September.

I interviewed on 10/10 and just called to ask when we should expect to hear back.

"The meeting is tonight...late this week early next week"

ooh that seems way faster than the original 6-8 weeks they quoted us... that would be like 4 weeks then shemarty?

We can only hope! I don't know for sure, that's just what I got out of the 10 second conversation I had with a woman on the phone.

What I don't understand is that CMD2B and I interviewed the same day, but she didn't found out her fate for another two weeks after.

It might be something random like your interviewer filled out your eval on time but CMD2B's interviewer filled it out late, so they didn't discuss that file at the earlier meeting. Dunno, random guess.

Just so you can stop wondering about me. I am actually not at my home in Ohio but working on a project at NIH. My Mom took the call and then gave them my information. I guess it took some time for them to find me in Rockville. Anyway, I am happy for this acceptance and have working on my other interviews. I am happy that you both received your acceptances.

walderness interviewed on the same day as I did (10/10) and got the acceptance call yesterday. Not sure what that means for me and others who interviewed on the same day... 😕

But I like wondering about you 🙁

😀 Good luck with your upcoming interviews.

Hopkins (like most medical schools) is no where near full in terms of the entering class. If you moved your interview to March, I would be worried but not December. There are plenty of people who interview in Feb (my partner interviewed in Feb and was accepted) and gain acceptance. You got the interview so you have a shot. Good luck!

Congratulations to everyone that's been accepted! I interviewed at the end of September, but no news yet. I know they said that I'd get a call around now if I was accepted. Does anyone know what they do if you're not? Do they send a rejection notice? Do they hang onto everyone's application until spring and then reject us all at the same time? 😀

I PM'd about 5 ppl who interviewed "early" to ask whether they had heard any news at all. I was hoping to find out whether Hopkins has given out post-interview rejection/waitlists, or whether everybody is kept in the dark until Spring. Nobody replied though.

thanks for the reassurance 🙂 im more than overly neurotic right now and every bit of reassurance helps!

Shemarty,

I interviewed in mid/late September. I called admissions and they told me that I should have recieved a letter stating I was on a post-interview hold sent out October 29th. The letter still hasn't come. If I ever get the letter I'll post more details.

Thanks for the update! That's really helpful to know. I wonder if the ppl who interviewed in early October can call in to ask about our status, or if we should wait another week or two. *waiting, waiting*

The next time that they would talk to you about your application would be Monday from 2-4. Make sure and tell them that you interviewed already. If you find out more about the hold please let me know.

Accepted!!!

(Interviewed 10/9)

I called about an hour ago, probably around the time you got the call (i assume phone call?).

They told me that they weren't quite ready to hand out the decisions yet, and that I should wait until early next week for a call/letter/e-mail.

I guess they're in the process of contacting everybody...

Does that mean that if you haven't gotten a call from them and you interviewed in September then you're rejected/waitlisted? 🙁

Hi. Just curious, for those of you who stayed in Reed Hall, was there internet? I'm trying to decide if I should bring my laptop. Thanks!

🙁Waitlisted

If you are waitlisted, you can only be accepted if one of your remaining medical schools do not begin within one week of them taking your name off the list. They said that they want to be respectful to other schools.

But I bet Shemarty gets it 😀 But what's your first choice, barring any financial aid.

Seriously! I'm pretty sure I'm screwed though. I interviewed in late September and haven't heard anything yet.
Well, they said 6-8 weeks and late Sept was only 7 weeks ago. I bet you'll hear soon. Maybe your interviewer turned in your evaluation late. Hang in there!

serikk beat me to the punch...

I interviewed at one school in late September and still haven't heard back, and it was my state school and they said we'd hear by 10/15! Hang in there 🙂

oh my god you guys i am so nervous my interview is next friday!!! it got moved up by a month or so, and it's so out of my league. how were your guys' interviews? is it 'get to know you' or 'beat you down' style? thanks much!

I feel it was a bit of both. The faculty interview made me show some aggressivness for why I want to be a doctor. The student interview was very "get to know you", and we ended up talking about NPR, Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olbermann, which I really enjoyed.

I interviewed with some really cool people, as well. Just be yourself, and do not forget that they want to see if you are a fit for their culture. The interview is proof that they believe you can cut it academically.

My student one was a little aggresive, but the faculty interview was very laid back and honestly enjoyable.

thanks for the reply vaddo!!! and CONGRATULATIONS!!! goddddddddd i'm so nervous!!! which is a bad thing, I KNOW.

Hehehe, you sound like I did before my Hopkins interview. I was all hyperactive and twitchy for a couple days, but by the time I got to Baltimore I'd worked it all out of my system. Indulge the neuroticism before you get there, while no one's watching. =)

Who was your student interviewer? I had Isaac, who was very chill.

Congrats to those who have been accepted so far!!! You all better be at Hopkins next year! 🙂 Good luck to those still in the process!

I spoke to the course director the other day and it looks like next year's class is going to be completely P/F. I don't think it's official yet (and may ultimately be veto'd). Unfortunately, our class will not be P/F next year 🙁 We also proposed small-groups be graded on a 1/2/3 scale with the average set at a 3 (currently it's 1/2/3/4 with the avg set at a 3).

Congrats to those who got in! Make sure you come to revisit, we'll show you the time of your lives!

Great! Hoping for P/F!

When you say "our" class and "next year's class" you are talking from c/o 2012's perspective, correct? So 2013 may likely be P/F?

woot 👍 I dont know what else I could ask for... except maybe a good fin aid package 🙂
